Crash damage needs to be sorted.. If it goes bang, it was going to anyway, unless it seized after crash damage... I have leant and borrowed for years, never had an issue.

I loaned my practice bike to Eddie Warren when he came to Sacramento to race an Australian promoted Arenacross. When he left he took his bars and suspension but left me his works cylinder and coned pipe. Worked out for me, but he had the means to fix anything if something went real bad.
I remember Ricky Ryan wanting to borrow my Dad's '83 CR480 (that I was racing) at a local night race. (Santa Clara PAL in '86). We politely said no. He walked over to another rider in the pits and borrowed an '84 RM500. He easily won and it was fun watching.

Did you know him? I think it's crossing the line to ask a total stranger to ride or race your bike.

As a whole it's just not a good idea, nobody will care for your stuff like you do , they simply don't have any skin in the game.

In passing and friend of a friend scenarios. Ended up getting to know him a few years later. I remember him riding my stock '91 KX125 and telling me it was the slowest 125 he's ever ridden!! Smile

Even if it's a friend it could still go bad. When I was 18 I rode a buddies brand new KTM 200. Chain snapped and ate up the cases. My bike was broken at the time, but I think you really need to look at the big picture. Do I trust this guy? Will he repair why he breaks? Very touchy subject IMO.

Depends on who it is. I only lend a bike to someone who I KNOW can ride and takes care of his own stuff, and also have the complete trust that if anything happens to the bike they will fix it better than we then got it. Only a couple of times have I found that in a person! Last guy had offered to put our YZ250 back together after a stall during rear linkage bearing replacement. While working on it his YZ450 blew. Bike came back looking brand new and every bolt greased!
Yep I'm on board here. If they don't take care of their own stuff then there is no way. If it's not someone I would feel comfortable asking to ride their bike then no way. I would also be expecting 2/3 of whatever the purse he made too.

I rented bikes for living in So Cal. for 12 years. I am 100% confident saying THERE IS NO $$ in mx rental biz. Bikes just don't last long, they will break. 450s are a bit better. Nobody wants to crash but less likely with vet riders.

I learned to not be attached to any bike and I still lend bikes to friends. But Im also not shy to ask anyone in the pits if I can try their bike.

I hear the local dealership will let you borrow a new bike for about $9 grand, and they will even let you have it for as long as you like.

This. I loaned my 97 model kx125 to a mate to race after his bike blew. We were in separate classes so I got to watch him ride. I thought I rode pretty hard but from start to finish off his race that bike was blowing smoke. He definitely cleaned it out

Someone asked to borrow my bike once and I had no problem with it. I told him $6k for the first ride then all the rest are free.

Funny this thread popped up - I was just thinking about the same situation a few days ago.

A few years ago I was at a Provincial round race, racing the Vet Jr class on my 06 CR250. This guy comes over to our pits and very humbly and nicely asks if I'd consider letting him race my bike in his second moto. I never knew him from Adam. He blew up his clutch on his YZ450 , but had a chance to clinch the Provincial +40 championship but just could not find a bike to ride. I told him I'd let him know in 1/2 hour. My wife and brother and I discussed it and we agreed that if he was willing to sign a "contract ", then he'd race my bike. He happily signed a contract we wrote up, signed and witnessed by both parties. It basically said he was responsible for the bike 100% no matter what happens.

Well buddy ripped a huge holeshot on my two stroke and lead every lap of his second moto. It was SO fun to watch!

He was so ecstaticly greatful as he left that weekend with the Provincial +40 championship. No harm to the bike. He couldn't have had a better race. And he couldn't have been more humble and appreciative.

I know it was a gamble, but I just had to feeling the dude was honest and wouldn't screw me. Getting it on paper made me feel really good about it.

Would I do it again?? Not sure. It would definitely depend on the situation. I certainly would NOT do it for everyone.

I've loaned bikes, and a couple of times they've come back with damage (cracked radiators, bent chambers). If you're not prepared to get it back scratched or damaged, don't loan it out. More often than not it'll come back scratched up.

About 10 years ago a mate let me ride his bike after mine broke.
I don't remember much from that day but his bike wasn't pretty.
I told him to get what he needed and i'd pay the bill, which i did but I always felt shit about it and don't ride mates bikes anymore.
He said his bike was never the same.

Long ago when I was racing I borrowed a bike from a friend for a local race I really wanted to race. My bike was broken and the only chance to race was to use his bike. Well, maybe I should have checked the whole bike before riding it, but this is what happened: During the race, a screw from the rear sprocket got loose and sliced (or milled) the swingarm so that a deep groove originated. Well, as I said, I didn't check the sprocket-screws before riding, but I still feel that in some way it was also his fault. I endet up paying for the swingarm, no question, just because I didn't want to be "that" guy.

So, if you lend your bike to someone, make sure everything is perfect before handing it to him. So if something happen there will be no doubt it was on his part.

We had a race a few weeks ago, blew a head gasket, in practice. Lying second in points, it was a gutter, but luckily there was guy there who I loaned my bike to at a race in Belgium last year.. His blew a shock, and my mx bike was I'm my truck, he asked if he could see if the shock would fit, I said yes, and if it didn't, he could use his wheels to put it into SM trim... I was riding a zero hours kxf loaned from a friend, as my bike had done a main that week.... As a result, we have all got to ride in events that were a big deal for us, and if we can help anyone we know, we always do.. Pay it forward.. I got to race a season of Ama after stepping up and loaning a bike to a stranger to come race in Europe.... Pay it forward

Never let anyone ride your bike.
You score the engine differently than your friend would.
I ride fast and always in 3rd or 4th
Rarely 2nd , never 1st

So if you got on my bike and pinned it in 2nd gear , which I have never done before , you could damage my engine just like that

just nuts in this era of ticking time bomb fourstrokes , there are only so many rides you get , every time the engine runs , it breaks down a little more , with a hundred moving parts ? Unless this pro is fully revamping my motor after the races ? No way , not to mention any other damages and wear , like ? clutch (if it's not a KTM), frame stretch, blow shocks, broken bits, fresh edge off tire etc...

If revamping an engine and clutch is a big deal ? The answer would be no

Has your ET3 replica ever even seen the dirt? I've never seen or heard of you riding it, but you're seriously considering letting a pro go race it? Don't be dumb.

Hope my comment didn't come off wrong. All I meant was the bike is soooo cherry, I wouldn't put it in someone else's hands. A regular bike may change that equation but yours is different. Hope your foot heals up quickly! Braaap
