Dungey and Decoster baggin on that red cross flagger got me thinking - who's flagged a local race? I raced 3 years in AMA District 22 and I was a member of the club that sponsored the Hawkeye Downs races. Whenever I wasn't racing due to bike issues or injury, I was out flagging. Even if I was racing and we were short flaggers, I'd flag between my motos.

It's dirty, noisy, and shit is happening so fast it's hard to be sure what needs to happen and when. It's a tough and thankless job and everyone who's bitchin about the flagging at the races better have some cred from doing it themselves.

I have flagged more than a few, then went on to being a ref. Just signed off on all the crazy mini parents and going back to flagging. I am a member of a local D14 mx club.

I have flagged perhaps a dozen times over the last 30 yrs... Boring but important... Flaggers don't get nearly enough appreciation...

I flag every so often at the local practice track. No races but we are usually really busy and have to limit how many riders on the track at once. Everybody has a yellow and red flag and a walkie talky. Gotta keep a close watch to what's going on that's for sure.

I never have, but I've always wanted to. I've been thinking about flagging at the Southwick National this year, but I don't know who to contact regarding getting on board to do so. I think it would be fun and quite a different experience than just spectating.
To me it did not seem at all like RD and RD were bagging on the flag man, but rather shrugged it off, remained focused and positive.

So, you start a thread where in the opening post you criticize the flaggers position on the track.

Then you start this thread where you criticize the criticizers!

I bet if RD and RD had your experience at flagging they wouldn't be baggin on the poor guy. (Not that they ever did, but lets not let facts get in the way)

Flag something local first, it's more difficult than it seems.

I happened to flag the Santa Clara Sx yesterday, The make for long days and But the you really can't beat being on the track ,Our club flags the Oakland event as well ,I believe you really need a experienced individual out there and can move quick on their feet not only for the riders and Feld crew but for their own safety as well And not Slowing the pace of the race,That's where the experience counts.I just woke up afternoon nap and now I'm goin down to watch the whole race.

I flagged a local Endurocross once and I was terrible.Took me half the night to stop rolling up the flag.It was also some of the most fun I've had at the races.

Got into a local track for free once on a practice day. Mini track, a worker didn't show up so I volunteered. Ran the mini track all day, my kid rode for free. Had a blast.

Do it all the time.
It offsets the cost of my son's riding.
Make my son do it every now and then as well.

Not a very difficult job but can make for some long days.
And frustrating when riders ignore your flag.

I flagged quite a bit back in my younger days. A local series i used to race actually had riders flag. After signing up in the morning they published a list of random riders per class that had to flag during another class his race.

The track / series didn't have money to pay for flaggers, so they used this model to solve it. Worked out pretty nicely i'd say since riders knew where to look out for to keep eachother save!

I used to do it for a local series sometimes on race day. Was an easy way to make $50 bucks but like others have mentioned, it does make for a long day. Especially if you race and also flag.

Flagged a couple local sno-x races too.

I pick up a flag quite often at out track. And I'm going to be honest, it seems like it never fails that no matter where I'm or or where I'm looking, I'm looking away from where the crash takes place.
