During his perfect outdoor season in 08, did he ever have a Moto where he crashed or barely won?

I don't think it was ever close at all. But the closest was Alessi at Thunder Valley Moto 2. 4.8 seconds. A lot of Motos he backed it down after getting a massive lead. Alessi kept him honest until his big crash at RedBud with margins staying under 20 seconds. After RedBud his winning margin got massive.

Largest lead was 1:10 at Millville Moto 2.

Didn't something happen at Thunder Valley too? Maybe a crash and comeback?

He had a couple crashes. Didn't be tear his ACL and waited until after the season ended to fix it?

Yeah, but James gave Alessi 8 seconds the last 2 laps at Thunder Valley.

I still think Unadilla was the closest overall. Cody Cooper never gave James a lot of time and the fact it was a mud fest meant one mistake could have resulted in James being screwed. Thankfully for James, his small tip over on lap 9 didnt cost him the win, but made it more interesting down the stretch. I remember being there and thought he might actually lose, especially when he tipped it over with just a few laps to go.

Looking at the individual lap times they were fairly close the entire moto. James crashed on lap 9 which cost him maybe 4-5 seconds, and got up about a second ahead of Cody Cooper, after that he pulled a second or two and won by 6 seconds. The last 2 laps they matched lap times, unlike a lot of the other motos that year where James gave up a bunch of time.

I was there but I don't remember anything happening out of the ordinary. But it was the night race.

True mud races can go haywire real quick. I just remember the end of that season he was so dominant. He would get 20-30 seconds and then cruise it in. It is what he should have done in 2007.

^ absolutely...but had he done that his whole career we may have seen him pass MC, maybe RC, and almost certainly have the most titles.

I dont think James saw the big picture (like Dungey does), sure you want to win, who doesnt want to win, but by crashing your brains out you are more likely to get injured resulting in less starts / less wins / less championships.

Cooper's coming over for outdoor nationals this year, first two rounds. Hoping he can pick up a ride for the rest.

Funny thing is that RC went balls out for the win always. he just stayed relatively injure free. Someone must have injected him with that Captain America serum.

Carmichael did have one major injury. I believe his knee kept him out of the 04 sx season.

I believe james hurt his knee at washougal in 07. Pretty sure he won phoenix in 08 on a shredded knee as well before pulling out of sx. Makes the perfect outdoor season in 08 even more impressive.

x2. He ran 2 SX races in 08, got his knee fixed, then had the perfect season outdoors.

Yes he did. That's why I said that he stayed relatively injure free. He did however fall down hard on many occasions, but due to Captain America serum, didn't hurt himself. Grinning

It was definitely one of the weakest fields we have ever seen.

Agreed, the fact that this thread has been discussing his biggest competition being Cody Cooper and Mike Alessi sums that up perfectly. I know these statements will tick off the JS7 fan crew (and please note I DO like James, I'm just being brutally honest), but that had to have been one of the weakest fields in 15-20 years.

Dungey got beat by Alessi @ Washougal several years later. He isn't exactly a slouch outdoors. You can dissect Stewart's competition all you want, but all of the other all time greats besides RC haven't been able to go 24-0.

Mike Alessi was a fast man on those factory Suzukis in 08 and 09. People always forget that. Remember in 2009 Chad never beat him before his injury, MA800 was over 30 points up on Chad after only 3 rounds. No way in Hell does Chad Reed win that title with MA800 in the field. The beginning of 08 had all the big guys there sans Reed and Langston. You could argue he would have still gone 24 and 0 with those guys there as they would have needed help to beat him.

The competition field today is light years more competitive to when JS when 24-0, I don't think that is debatable. It's still a very impressive accomplishment because of what can easily go wrong in 24 races - but a reasonable person will admit the field is no where near what it is now.

Ah, yes - for one race it was the greatest display of road-grading in MX I've seen a in long time. Alessi wasn't a slouch by any means, but he isn't even close to the competition of today's field. There's a reason you don't see 24-0 but once or twice in the history of the sport. It takes the alignment of several conditions to happen. 1 Super fast rider, in a below average field of riders, with no mechanical problems or injuries. It still impressive, I just think some of the luster comes off when you dive into the quality of depth (or lack of) in the field.

Did he race A2 that year? I thought he pulled out after Phoenix?

He did practice. Cased a jump. Messed up his knee.

How many years had RC been beating his field?...
