On the first day I went to a track (Cahuilla Creek) I was getting dressed up and Ernesto Fonseca, Michael Bryne showed up. They had two tracks and I went out on the vet track as I was super nervous. Back then the old vet track had a pretty good sand section that got real rough. I was coming into a corner and I heard a bike coming up fast behind me. I went wide in the turn and a guy on a Honda took the inside and just roosted the heck out of me. It was Jeremy Mcgrath. I remember saying "Wah Who" as loud as I could.
After I got home I made a document on my PC titled "Riders Who Have Passed Me". After my first day riding in So Cal I had three famous guys already. I still keep adding to that list today. I don't have a total number but I'm on my third page of riders who are very good privateers up to factory riders.
My wife just laughs at me when I come home and I say guess who I rode with today? It's been amazing.
I was PASSED by Jeremy Albrecht and Jeff Emig on James Stewart's Kawasaki 125 at the "new" now defunct Saddleback track in 2002. They were just testing his bike.
And was severely passed by James himself (riding his Kawasaki 125) on the Lake Elsinore Vet track in 2004. He was just goofing off. So when he pitted I shook his hand and congratulated him for thoroughly trouncing his competition the week before at the Glen Helen National.
Does that count? Thanks for asking me.
There's 2 Belgian GP riders that passed me while practicing often over there, Ken Dedycker & Steve Ramon. Also raced against Anstie in an amateur championship (he raced his 85cc in the mx 250 class).
We don't live that far from Kdub so my son has ridden with him many times.
If you want to ride with some pros check out kdubs party in the pasture. McGrath, Windham, Cue, Hahn, Jordan Smith, the year before had few others too.
If you want to get really close, volunteer to flag. That's where you see how fast those cats are.
I was a flagger at a main jump and was talking to a dude that looked a little familiar. I think it was Coombs
When I was around 11 years old me and the local kids in Palm Springs rode several times with Steve McQueen....he had a red Husky at the time. When I say rode....he would leave us all behind and then sit and have a cigarette until we all caught up. Incredibly nice guy at the height of his fame...he had Ali McGraw at home and he was out playing with the local kids
No one has ever passed me as fast as Steve mertens did at hangtown, it was unreal

Suck it, bitches!
Pretty cool to live near the hotbed of the moto industry, huh?
Rode with some guys in Europe..King Brothers, Brown, James D, all cool guys.
Pit Row
Growing up in Southern California and traveling to the amateur nats definitely allowed me the chance to rub shoulders with a lot of those guys....not that I ever even came close to battling with them haha
It was pretty funny though, pops sent me over this screen shot right after A1 this year with the caption of:
"Don't forget you beat that guys once"
Pretty confident he went down both motos, but hey Ill take it! haha
That being said, Adam was on a KX65 and hauling the mail. It was the first time I had ever seen him ride in person. Was giving Travis a good run for his money around a mildly sandy track. It was awesome to see the little ripper going so fast (I didn't want to pull out my CRF450 when he was on the track lol!).
Great times, great memories.
Have also ridden with/raced against many of the top GNCC pro's over the years.
Desert racing is different...I've been on the line with KC66, Destry Abbott, and many other factory level top pros.
I wouldn't say I "ride with" them...unless you consider them being an hour ahead of me, riding with them. lol
Fast forward a million years. I have ridden the track with Guy Cooper and up in Wichita with the Hahn bros. I should say, gotten blasted by Cooper and the Hahns.
Fro and Stanton too at RCU and a bunch of Aussie pros.
