The when did you quit thread and some of the responses got me thinking:

I'm curious to hear from the people that have motorcycles but aren't riding why they aren't. Know there are a littany of reasons that keep people sidelined finances, tracks, injury, family, etc. so I am curious what is the mix in 2016.

Also if it is track related, how much would a scramblecross in your area motivate you to get back out there?

I had one collecting dust for a while. I switched jobs and didn't have health insurance so I made myself promise to not ride it. I got tired of seeing it so I sold it.

I have one right now collecting dust. "Life" got in the way for a while, but it's just temporary. I went 30 years w/o racing and returned racing Hare Scrambles. I've decided I'll never go w/o a bike again and I believe riding/racing keeps me young... at least that's my argument....

Mine has been collecting dust since last spring. Mostly due to lack of time and my knee going sour. With a new job that is giving my knees a great workout and custom knee braces of the way the dust will be knocked off this coming spring Smile

My bikes are sitting at the moment because my wife says my broken bone and concussion total about equal my age(46). No health insurance right now, So I have a couple of nice reminders in the garage of what used to be.

I have 2 collecting dust. A 1970 Honda Trail 70 and a 1981 Yamaha DT-80. Of course they are hanging so it would be tough to get them down and ride them!

My other bike is a KTM 500 that I bought about a year ago and haven't put 5 mins on it. I broke my ankle shortly after and still haven't been released to ride again.

My 06 YZ450 only gets used for 1 week of the year, and that's at the St Anthony dunes in Idaho. Reason I don't use it much is I bought a new KTM, but I can't bring myself to sell the old girl. Too many fond memories, plus it's still pristine as I am old and slow! Haha

My 05 CR125 is currently sitting in a storage, I separated my shoulder really badly and haven't had the urge to really ride after that. Getting hurt sucks. I'd like to sell it but I don't know who would want it, and it needs to be gone through. Maybe one day I'll take it back out, who knows.

Its winter, less people to ride with. Full time engineering undergrad. Life isn't bike friendly.

Mine is collecting dust for the past month and a half. 2ft of snow will do that. Someday I'll pick up a timber sled but till then I'll stick to snowmobiles.

I just got a major promotion, so both of mine will collect dust the entire summer. If I get out 5 times I'd be elated.

I have a 10-year old YZ collecting dust right now. Fork seals are blown and I can't afford to fix even that. I sometimes putt around on it anyway and it's a an all-new sport: the strange-handling adventures of Dr. Pogo Stick!

I have mine that I ride 2-3 times a year. I figure the day I sold it, I'd want to get another one...and this one isn't costing anything sitting in the garage.

I used to keep at least 8-10 bikes race ready at all times for the kids and I as we would race vintage and modern on the same day and often times multiple classes. As work or school got in the way and a bike broke we would just grab another bike and get around to repairing the broken one when I had time. When the next one broke , just grab another, then another, then another. Eventually the kids grew up, got married, joined the military...whatever and here I sit with a dozen broken bikes and a dozen restoration projects I have been collecting parts for for years. Slowly getting them back together but even just sitting they are all needing tires, air filters and suspension rebuilt.

My 74 CR250 is almost down to the frame right now getting a total engine rebuild with an all new custom built micro polished transmission, Race Tech front fork rebuild with springs and emulators and custom built Race Tech GS-3 rear shocks. New tires, tubes, chain, sprockets, grips, cables, filter.....probably going to have 5 grand in the refresh. Should see me through to the end of my racing days though. Cool thing about it is that it has been my vintage racer since 1992. Always has been one of the most competitive bikes in the class and will be for many more years.

^This. I found that as soon as I don't have a bike around, that is when someone comes by and wants to ride. So I keep three ready now. I've started riding again as part of my "Therapy" now. And you will always need a spare.

Well, we have quite a few bikes but the only one that's a dust collector is my '96 Honda Replica CR125 that I built for the 125 Dream Race a couple years ago. Needs a cylinder replate that I just haven't gotten around to. One of these days.........

I've got a trashed 94 CR250 collecting dust in the corner of my garage...it's a project bike I'll get to one of these days. I'd like to restore it to the "original" look at some point.

It's actually THE bike I won my first motocross race on back in '96. So it's got a ton of sentimental value...I found it leaning up against a fence in my dads back yard about 4 years ago, and I just couldn't leave it there.

I have an 09 KTM collecting dust because I completely gernaded the motor at gopher dunes. That track eats motors like no other

I have six bikes collecting dust right now, my CRF250 two KTM 50's and 3 PW50's, mine is down for maintenance, and my sons bikes are just trapped due to parents retiring and offloading so much stuff on me. My 8 yr old keeps hounding me to get his bike out, I just haven't had time.

2008 KTM 300XCWe - In 2008 I had a left hand scaphoid fracture. Raced a few offroad races the next season then stopped. I loaned it out to a few friends to race during that time. My son started racing it this year so it sits idle no more.

I bought a new CRF 250R in '09 my Daughter raced (rode) it 4 times, and hung up her boots.
I have $8300 in it, and every time I've tried to sell it, all I ever hear is "it's not worth that much".
I don't need the money and I won't give it away, so it sits.
I have 4 BICYCLES that are worth more than I asked for this motorcycle, I just sold my Specialized Venge for $5000 and I can't get $4000 for this motorcycle.
I used to get close to that for our Full race Minis.
Yeah 4 strokes, every body is afraid they are buying a bomb.

For me it is just finances. I am approaching my 10th anniversary and trying to keep up with 3 children wife and all that goes with that. Its really been since 08 that I have ridden with any consistency. I keep thinking someday I will have the money to get a bottom end and get my leaky fork seals fixed but for now it is a struggle to keep food on the table. So as much as I love to ride, and dream about it I don't think I am going to be doing it with any consistency any time soon. Really I love riding and it makes me feel so good about life but I can only do what I can do.

2014 KX450f with less than 51 hours on it sitting under a tarp in a garage, hours from me. Live in an apartment in San Diego county with no garage. Expensive living out here so I can't afford to move to a new place at the moment. All of my friends got hurt and quit, or have families now, so my interest in riding diminished a bit more. I've thought about selling it quite a few times, but it would be hard to give it up!

My 07 CRF150RB has been sitting since my 2nd year of college in 2011. Got it new as my first bike when I was 15 and rode not often but a few times a year through high school. College and lack of money have been the problem since. Now that I am making enough that I could at least ride a bit, I moved out to an apartment and don't have a garage/many tools to work on it so it's at home still collecting dust.

I want to get a 125 or 150 2 stroke next year but am not sure what to do about the apartment living situation. Anyone have suggestions?

My 2010 ninja zx6r will be collecting dust for many years as I just got my insurance renewal in the mail and it went from 2 grand a year to insure up to 3800 bucks my insurance company got bought out and the new company doesn't offer the same rates on sport bikes so I cancelled on the spot. Can't even be bothered to call around for quotes anymore, I might be able to get insured for about 3 grand but don't want to pay that either. So it will sit for a while.

Rode very often from about 11 yrs old through my late 20's. Injuries started piling up and friends quit riding so my riding became less frequent starting in my late 20's. I got married and have a 5 yr old boy. Im 42 now and have not ridden in about 8 yrs. i never thought this would happen so still have my last bike, just collecting dust.

My "Garage Monument" has been collecting dust along with my gear since I ruptured my Achilles this time last year. Did not get surgery till the end of March 2015, and there is at least a full year till back to "somewhat normal". I have made good progress in the gym, but being 52 years old the progress is slow. I am hoping to get back on my bike by June or July, but for now will be very happy to be back on my mountain bike to do just road riding.
