While you guys have all been wrapping yourselves up in A1 Gate, I've been busy fondling what the UK's Royal Mail just dropped in my lap. Courtesy of Vital Old School member StevieD and his company Phil Denton Engineering I now have one of the worlds trickest trannies for a 1974 CR250M Honda. Just a micropolished machined work of art.
Anyone who has spent time on a 73-74 CR250 knows 2nd and 3rd gear are good for about a year of abuse before they go to missing shifts. Back around 1998 I rounded up a complete set of new gears, shafts, shift forks and shift drum. Not an easy task back then and nearly impossible today. I sent them all to a CR machinist enthusiast and had them all matched, back cut, machined and shimmed to perfection and managed to get many good years out of it. Last few times it has been out over the past 4 or so years it's been tossing out of 3r'd a little. Been time to tear it apart and see what's up but scared of what I might find. Stevie posted up some CR480 gearbox bits they are making and I opened my mouth and stated I sure would like one for the early CR. In short order he replied back and said he could hook me up. Seems he knows a guy...
My money pit CR just got a little deeper, but damn I am impressed with people who can build things. Who would have thought you could get a brand new custom built state of the art gearbox for a 43 year old dirt bike? Now I will have to doll the rest of it up and get some fresh suspension on it.

Does your new transmission fix whatever the problem was that Honda built into it? Is it just a spacing/manufacturing tolerance problem?

I am scared to ask but how much do these things cost?
I'm guessing the first set had a buttload more time involved figuring things out.
What oil will you use with these gear-shaped jewels?
