Go make a list of all the guys on factory bikes that're getting paid to ride'em.
Now, compare that to the 22 gates on the line (66 when including 250 West/East)

Here's a start (Including DIRECT Factory Support...BTO, PC, Geico, Star...etc.)

11 at KTM
4 at Husky
8 at Honda (9 when you include Freddie)
7 at Kawasaki
4 at Suzuki
7 at Yamaha (Eight if Star has 5 riders...?)

That's 41 (Actually 43...but, let's go conservative)

Now, add up the *Support Teams...here's a soft count...
2 at MCR
2 at RMC
2 at Tedder
2 at Rock RIver
4 at Motorcycle Superstore
2 at Blue Buffalo/Slater
2 at Dirt Candy
2 at 5150

That's 18 more...but...what about the Asterisk I put up there...?
Some of these guys on the 2nd list aren't necessarily "paid"...but, they aren't Privateering it or "Roughing It", either.
And that's my point: No ONE was EVER promised a "Salary".
This IS NOT a 9-5 Job...
It's a CHOSEN SPORT that these guys are ATTEMPTING to make their "Profession".

Btw, 41 + 18 = 59 With that number I've filled most ALL the gates at ALL the West -AND- East races...which is 66 gates when you do the Math (8 open gates).

I've left out a few Teams...my bad; but, I think we can all see the point.

While we're here...we are a LONG-LONG-Looooong Way from the other Sports and Leagues that many of you want to compare SX/MX to. Some of you need to learn the meaning of "Franchise", "Professional", "Accomplished", "Viable"...etc.

I have mixed feelings about this. I agree, we cannot apply a Left Wing Liberal solution to this, because that just doesnt work, but it can be improved over its current method.

I think its not great to mix in unpaid privateers with the top talent at the highest level of our sport. Its just not good in any way. They are just getting lapped and increasing the risk for everyone. Lets make the Premiere Series a true Premiere series, with 20+ PROFESSIONAL riders that get paid to train all week and ride professional class equipment for pro teams. I would say any 450 rider should have to be paid a certain amount just to be in the series, and he must be signed to a qualified team. In F1, Nascar, Indycar there are TEAMS that are registered as part of the league and they must meet some financial requirements. The TEAMS will sign the riders out of the Lights class to a salary commensurate with their results.

There is a rookie cap in NFL. So why cant they make the first contract in 450 a capped one with major win bonuses?

The 250 class can be the development series. Basically make it for privateers and Factory Team development. Salaries here are capped, and the bikes must be showroom stock to keep the costs down.

I dont see why they cant pay a 450 rider a base salary of $75K and handsome finish bonuses based on results.

If that means that RD ha to make 2.75 million instead of 3 million, I am okay with that. He can easily make it up if he wins and places well all year.

In theory, maybe its a sliding scale, each year you are eligible for a higher base and a higher percentage bonus. Then if they organize and all contribute to a fund, they can all get some healthcare, and injury pay, and maybe even some assistance after they retire. Right now its every man for himself, and thats not good for the sport, especially if we want it to grow.

I dont know how they can do it, but the bottom line, I think the money being spent in the 250 class is better spent making a proper field in the Premiere class. Make 250 a true entry/development class.

I prefer to watch 25 of the best racers in the 450 class. I get nothing from watching Roczen blow past a guy that drove himself to the track all week and didnt train or have a competitive team and equipment. Its just not entertainment at all.

The RISK is ENTIRLEY Voluntary and made in THE NAME OF "Sport".

That need's to recognized and understood.

The can stop at ANYTIME & go take a LOW RISK "Job"...like making your hamburger or building your house or fixing your truck. You know J-O-B?

Don't even pull the "risking your life" Bullshit. Everyone who has ever raced takes even more of a risk racing locally on a 50+ HP bike on a track with huge jumps with 39 other 450 C riders so your "risking their life" crap is lame and sounds like what your grandmother would say, so toughen up buttercup. When was the last time anyone paid to watch someone flip a burger, much less on TV?

Lets compare apples to apples please. My whole point is that I think we need to make this Premiere Class a PRO league. Meaning a full field of Team riders. And those guys should dedicate most of their waking moments to being a Professional, and earning enough salary to do so. You dont see a 3rd string Linebacker working at Sports Authority during the week and wearing a hand me down helmet and sneakers from Craigslist. He gets paid to train and play as a pro with comparable equipment. The Pro's dont let high school or college scrubs walk on and give it a go when they are in town....so if we want to someday be as big as the NFL and get the same coverage and sponsor money, we have to try to emulate their model as best we can. The every man for himself mentality will only go so far. Either way the top talent will still win and be top earners.

JayCarpent for president!!! If we're setting salaries based on risk, I'm due for a raise. I'm a firefighter/paramedic. My life could be at risk to save another, so that's got to be worth huge money, right? Can you please go to the mayor's office and demand she pays us a lot more than she does? I didn't think so. I don't expect a seven figure salary for what I do, or even a six figure one for that matter.

Are you as outraged by what our military members deployed to combat zones are getting paid? If you want to talk about real risk, talk to some of those guys who have seen combat.

But hey, let's offer some guy who rides a motorcycle fast a ton of money to do so. The risk in this sport is overstated. Can you get hurt? Sure. Can it be bad? Sure. I've even been there where riding almost cost me my career. The risk is what you make of it. These guys aren't "risking their lives" to ride a motorcycle. They're simply getting paid for something that is a hobby to most of us.

The way the sport is currently set up, the money riders receive is not in any way tied to the payouts at the races. These are largely symbolic. Feld provides a track, a venue, and exposure through TV time. The riders are paid by their teams and sponsors. The riders benefit from Feld because the exposure they get translates into more sponsorship dollars. It is a pretty simple equation, and if you think all the top guys are out there racing for the big $1500 check every week you aren't looking at reality. For the privateers out there trying to break into the sport, Feld provides the same opportunity, and I don't think they have any obligation to make sure these guys get enough money to make a living. They get the opportunity to race, and if they get some results, they will get some more support. When the starting pay for a pilot is $21,000 a year I am hard pressed to feel sorry for some guy living his dream of trying to make it in supercross that isn't making a decent wage.

Here is the payout for A1 250 class in 2015. The sixth place guy made $250 more than the 22nd place guy. Big whoop! Winning a pro supercross should pay you at least enough to buy a new bike!

1. Jessy Nelson – $3350/$1000 holeshot award
2. Zach Osborne – $2325
3. Tyler Bowers – $1825

5. Aaron Plessinger – $1525

And here's the thing... even if they doubled the purse, okay it goes from 23.7K to 47.4K. Is that really such a big deal when taken out of what I'd guess is around two million-ish in ticket sales alone at each event (I realize they all vary)? For something that would probably help the overall level of competition (and entertainment) throughout the series, not to mention long-term prospects of the sport?

I guess that was a rhetorical question. The realist in me knows that the top 5-7 guys are who the fans come for (and top 1-3 in the 250s), and for the promoter the guys who run 15-22 aren't that big of a concern, because they know somebody will somehow find a way to get a bike together and fill their gate. Capitalism at its finest. But again from the circus/monster truck/entertainment perspective I guess the guys further back might crash more, so there's some value to that. All of this was sort of okay 25 years ago when Rick Melon was working five days a week and driving to the supercross, but now that 20th place guy is probably someone who has been devoted to supercross nonstop since grade school and has had multiple trips to Lorettas building for that dream. I know, I know, there are no "freebies," nobody "deserves" anything, but damn. And maybe that's one of the reasons our sport is inherently self-limiting.

I'd love to see the actual numbers on how it all comes together and where the money goes... stadium rental, track construction, television, insurance, merch, event and title sponsors, purse money, concessions, etc. Not to point fingers, but just to understand.

If you want to emulate them, FELD will be the employer (like the NFL) of the race teams. The teams will employ the riders. FELD will manage all aspects of what's acceptable and what's not. And if you're a privateer trying to make it, well you better get hired by a team since that's the only ticket to the show.

We need to understand that SX/MX will never have the viewership of the NFL. Having teams local promotes fans. Having a schedule that has teams "home" half the season promotes fans. Having football accessible in public schools allows people to relate...and promotes fans.

The general public feels no alliance to a team or rider that works on the opposite side of the country and comes to town once or twice a year. SX/MX is little more than a novelty sport. Awesome when it comes around and then forgotten until next year when it comes again. There's a core following, but we will be following no matter what.

Start thinking of ideas to fulfill the sport on its own. And they don't lie in emulating what another team sport does.

It was not one sentence but your whole post,I do understand your point but SX/MX will never have the money or audience of the NFL or even NASCAR because it is a niche sport more alone the lines of Sprint car racing. There is no where near the audience or money to support a complete field of Pro teams and that is one of the great things about SX/MX. It is one of the few motorsports that a rider with the talent can go race a national with a grass roots effort because its more rider than bike.
SX/MX has come along way from the days of vans and pickups but I thing some of you over estimate the level of growth now that MX bikes sales are on a decline and local MX numbers have been on a steady decline for years.

HEY!!

Hi....you guys remember me? I used to hang around here quite a bit, and I have read this same argument like, "OH MY GOD, Becky, LOOK AT THAT THREAD, it's so BIG"

I don't know where you guys think Feld, or even MXSports have this magic money tree, but can you show it to me??

I have asked this question, I swear, every year, maybe 3x a year, when these same threads come up, and no one HAS EVER EVEN TRIED to answer it.....

Make a list of all the costs to put on a SX event.....from dirt, to staff, to airfares/hotels/per diems, to porta shitters, to fencing, to replacing the grass (yes, that IS part of the deal, and it ain't cheap grass), insurance, rain out insurance, and on and on and on.....Feld ain't making as much as you think, and EVEN IF your math brings you to a $1MM per event profit, you're talking about a multi-billion dollar company....a million is pocket change....jet fuel and lunch for a business trip. It's nothing in the big picture. Then you have to ask, who dictates how much money/profit Feld or MXSports makes?? How much is too much? I've been around here long enough to know this is a pretty conservative crowd, and the idea of limiting or dictating a corporation's profit margin isn't going to go down well.

This weekend at A1 with the El Monsoon happenin', Feld is going to LOSE MONEY....low crowd numbers and more damage to facility they have to pay for....mud races are nightmares for more than the teams and riders

and when it cameto the "Supercross Wars" (Feld/CCE vs Jam/AMA) what was said was right, Feld/CCE locked up ALL DIRT BASED EVENTS in every major stadium in the US, even if a SX isn't there, a Monster Jam is....so, to have another series, not unless in college stadiums or Walmart parking lots, so a second series ain't gonna happen.

And lastly, it is up to the riders to make a stand, but if they do, they risk their careers, because if they don't race, even in protest, they violate their employment agreement with their team....can you say "unemployed?" And for every rider who iskicked out or fired, there's 10 behind him to step up and try to "make their bones" as a Pro SX'r

Reality sucks, but that's it

Back to my hole.....Bye!!

Nascar started out as a niche sport racing on the beach in Daytona. Now they have a league, teams, sponsors and a large audience. I think MX is way better suited for TV than Nascar and its a better show, Feld just needs to market these guys and we need a few more big names to bring to the masses. I get what you are saying, and its not easy to get from here to there, I agree, but that doesn't mean we just stop trying and stop evolving. As far as nobody caring for a rider bc he is not a hometown star, or that SX is a travelling circus (pun intended) I don't agree with that at all. I don't even have a hometown rider or race and I follow the sport more intensely than NFL. I am a fan of other NFL teams and players outside of my lousy Dolphins. I will watch almost any NFL game because of the level of talent in every game makes it compelling. On any day any team can beat another, just look at my stinkin Dolphins beat the Patriots this weekend. The Falcons knocked out the Panthers perfect season. When was the last time someone like the #722 won a main?? We need to get new people to show up at a race and become hooked, then they start watching on TV and get their friends and family hooked on to it. If they get a few races on the main Fox and someone stumbles onto it after a Golf Tournament or some other major event, and we pick up new fans from that, and then the sponsors will soon follow. Then there is some real money to fight over. Hopefully they will get there. Remember, its easier for the average American viewer to buy a dirt bike and ride it than to buy a Nascar and race it. People can relate and dream. Why do you think they watch Golf and Tennis on TV?? I know the purist doesn't like the Monster girls and the loud music, and sideshow, but it sells. This is a Saturday night series, people like to get rowdy. Think Monster Truck Jam, WWF. If we can get the riders to have more airtime and get them to say something other than their sponsors names, it would go a long way. Copper Webb and Tyler Bowers made it entertaining this year. Even Marvin Musquin with his long rants added some personality. We need more of that. Maybe Stew and Reed can scrap it out on a podium!

I don't mind people trying to come up with ideas to grow the sport and bring more money in. But I do find it annoying when people want to just blurt out "pay them more, the promoter is making too much." Uhhhh, no shit, that's why they are doing it.

Dude, NASCAR, NBA and even my shitty Dolfins are getting paid MILLIONS in TV and Radio rights

Who's doing Dolphins on radio in Miami, still WQAM? They're paying the Dolphins millions for those rights, because they make it back in ad revenue....we you areound during the Neil Rogers days? He used to explain all this crap out, pissing off all the TV and radio stations down there. He used to rip WSVN mercilessly....but I digress......SX is not getting paid much, if anything, to be aired on TV, and up until recently, FELD was PAYING THEM to put it on the air, like one long commercial, so people would attend when the circus (series) came to their town, but only in last few years it either became a push, or FOX started paying Feld a few bucks, but certainly not ANYWHERE close to the multi-millions the networks pay for stick and ball

I said people don't pay anyone to watch someone flip a burger. Both NFL and MX have paid audiences. Besides, I didn't compare, I clearly stated if we want to have the sponsor money and audience of the NFL, we need to try to emulate them. I know it's easy to take one sentence out if a paragraph and change its meaning to reflect anything but please take my whole post in context.

Thanks
This is a professional SPORT, which really means entertainment. The value of entertainment is measured by how many people want to watch it and, to a lesser extent, how much they will pay to watch it. NFL, F1, NASCAR, golf, tennis etc all have direct and TV audiences measured (annually) in billions. That is high value entertainment.

The entities who own the rights to those sports make money by selling the media rights to media outlets. In turn, the media outlets make even more money by selling to sponsors and advertisers the opportunity to put their brands in front of those large audiences. Sponsors and advertisers believe the investment is worthwhile in sales and is relative to the size of the audience, but the fact is that the only group who are paying directly out of their own pockets with no direct return are sponsors and advertisers.

Supercross has been around now for what, close to 40 years? Do you think if it had that much entertainment value someone would have jumped on it already? The fact is - supercross (and motocross) don't have high entertainment value to spectators and TV audiences. The main event at a supercross, the one people would potentially pay to see, barely lasts 20 minutes. That's less than the actual advertising slots in a NASCAR or NFL broadcast. Add to that the difficulty in being able to show bike/rider sponsors in a TV broadcast.

To use your analogy, if we place flipping burgers at one end of the entertainment scale, and NFL at the other, SX/MX sits somewhere in between, but probably closer to the burger end.

You get what you negotiate, no one is giving anything away for free.

What would it be worth to Feld to have RV22 back on the starting line?

If the 3 hr. TV show can be improved in entertainment value and bring more eyes to the TV screen that would increase the size of the pie that gets cut up.
