2008 Rm250 vs New 250 2 strokes

Hey, so i have a 2008 Rm 250 I've owned since new and haven't ridden it much over the last couple years since I've bought a 450. Now seeing it sit is making me sad and really wanting to start mixing gas again so heres the debate... Should i sink some money into it and make it competitive against the newer 2 strokes or sell it and buy a new 250 2 stroke. (Ktm or yam) It won't see the motocross track probably it will end up being my cross country/ hare scramble racer.

So let me see-
1) buy a new bike which will depreciate like hell for 2-3 years and will (for the forseeable) be replaced each year by a 'new' but not much if any better.
Or
2) throw some dollars at a bike which is becoming more desirable as time goes on & appreciating in value because there's fewer and fewer good ones available to buy.

That RM still has everything a new YZ & SX has got!
Yeah, sell it. To me. I'll keep it Til theyre like rockin horse sh*t and worth a relative fortune!
(I do already have one.)

Rebuild it and race it! I see no reason to go drop $7k on a new 250 2 stroke if you've already got one even if it's an 08. The new Yz is no different than the 08 yz250 other than a little bit in suspension and plastic.

You, as a rider, will make MUCH more difference than a new bike...keep it!

Mine and I love it. Now has brand new PC works pipe and shorty silencer fitted. She sounds as sweet as she looks!

I put the PC exhaust on mine, as well as Vforce reeds, and an 8 oz. flywheel weight. Great combo. The last era of RM250 is the only bike I could really consider. I sold mine to keep a CRF450. Big mistake.I finally got rid of the 450 and bought a CR500 and did a AF conversion, which I love. The RM250 would be the only thing I'd add to my stable. I do still have my RM125 though! Keep the RM. You'll regret selling it down the road.

Do what you'll be most happy about! Dump some money into it and ride the knobs off or sell it and buy a freshy! Either way you'll be pumped and so will the sport. No wrong way here.

IF it were me:

1. Go ham on a suspension revalve (Reputable dealer, coating, the whole 9 yards)

2. Buy a quality big tank for it

3. Hinson clutch (At the bare minimum a billet basket)

4. Works Connection one touch clutch mount with lever

5. Fasst Flexx Handlebars

6. Fresh tires

At most, that totals 1500 without any engine work (assuming it doesn't need it) and then you've got a brand new ride!

I contemplate this with my 04 CR a few times a year. Always worth it to just stick with what you got and make it right. In my mind.

I tried to sell my YZ250 when I went to a 450. I kept getting low ball .. No one wants a 2 stroke $700 offers till I said my bike will rot in a corner of my garage before I give it away.



years later after selling the 450 I pulled it back out and did a make over.

I went from an 07 rm250 with pc pipe and shorty to a 2012 250sx.
Power wise the ktm made more and it was smoother and easier to use
handling on the ktm i felt was better on the ktm, it turned in as well as i could have wanted and drove straighter out of corners.
Had both bikes suspension revalved by the same guy so was pretty much the same.
All in all the ktm is a better bike but, if i were to do it all over again i would keep the rm. I think with vforce reeds and a port job the power would be pretty much on par and as i was racing 250fs it was more than enough. A flywheel weight to help it hook up better and i think i would have turned the same lap times on the rm.
If you spend the money on your rm that you would spend upgrading you will have more of a bike than the ktm and definitely the yz

Last gen RM250 is the 7.0% alcohol craft beer of bikes. Highly effective, some love it, some hate it, but definitely an acquired taste.

The yz is bud light. Nothing to write home about but its tried, tested, true, it works for the broadest range of people.

The ktm is the Not your Grandfather's rootbeer. It's different, but good, and you sometimes have to drive across town to get it.
