If there was no crash, there would be no penalty! Period. And since contact was not initiated by VR and MM's crash was a result of his own doing... see where this goes Wink

Also, I'm pretty sure in all those video's I seen, MM not only ran someone wide, but all the way out to the rumble strips which is way past where VR was running him to. AND he actually HIT another rider for a WIN!

I don't really care who wins the title but c'mon, regardless of the penalty handed down, it was and is wrong..

If Rossi had not run right out to deliberately block Marquez, there would be no crash. Period. See where this is going? Both riders played their part, to say that Rossi is just a victim and then throw Marquez under the bus is wrong. Marquez's passes were opportunistic and aggressive, but none of them were a deliberate attempt to run Rossi out off the track or block him.

He's not the only rider to hit someone for a win, remember Rossi doing it to Gibernau at Jerez?
RG1,

But deliberately running wide to put a block on someone is a part of racing and it isn't initiating contact with another rider. Rossi didn't initiate contact (or even run him to the rumble strips for that matter). MM on the other hand did choose to contact him. The person initiating the contact should be the standard here. Not running people wide.

Would VR still have been penalized for taking him wide had MM kept the bike stood up thus avoiding contact and crashing?

So by those same standards everything that Marquez did preceding the incident was also just racing and he didn't do much wrong.

I don't think Rossi would've been penalised had Marquez not fallen off, I don't think he even would've been penalised had he just taken the corner and drifted out and hit Marquez and not made it look so deliberate. You could argue that because Marquez had DNF'd and scored no points, there was no need to punish him as he had already received a consequence to his actions. Although I don't think he intentionally crashed to get Rossi a penalty

Eh not quite, I am a VR fan and have been since 250 days For this incident all blame is on MM. He had the chance to back off but never took it.

People need to remember VR is a very clever rider as has been this year - again contact with MM when he 'had' to go over gravel (can't remember which race maybe Assen), this all within the rules

I don't believe the consensus here is you're making good points!

I most likely would have done exactly what Rossi did. Marc runs into Rossi, penalty is too extreme.

I had nothing against Marquez, especially since he likes dirt bikes too, but messing up with big daddy at the end of a championship battle is not the smartest way to get fans outside Spain.

I guess I would be manager at hrc I would have a broken hand and a rider with a concussion.

I've seen the race & all I can say is this, I've never ever seen a rider constantly look over at another rider whilst running him to the edge of the track in road racing, mx & sx yeah of course, road never.

Just a thought, how would you guys react if MM took VR to the edge of the track at the final round as pay back?

That would be nothing new:

A Dramatic Victory for Valentino Rossi - Argentina GP 2015

Rossi Wins After Contact with Márquez - Dutch GP 2015
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IruM32fN5tw

And he tried about a dozen times Sunday and ended on the ground.

Marc broke the unwritten rule, always RESPECT those fighting for a Championship. Marquez has no respect for the championship, the sport or its fans he is just a PUNK.
Rossi was wrong putting this Spanish Punk in his place I can only hope that Marquez grows from this incident.

One thing we can all agree on: Lorenzo is a cock for running straight to race control to complain about the incident.

I have neither rose colored Val glasses or a dislike for Marquez. MM is exciting as hell and the new "guy" imho. Valentino is the wily grissled old master who has seen it and done it all, knows his days are very numbered and has managed to position himself for one last hurrah. I think the whole thing was just a hard emotional racing incident that the sactioning body should have stayed the hell out of. IMHO they (the rules makers) have just fucked this whole thing up.

interesting that most the current GP riders agree with the sanction, i would have thought that maybe they would have backed Rossi more,
I see it as jealousy/envy of Valentinos skill and accomplishments. As an old man by MotoGP standards he can still ride circles around all but a handful of these guys and has more talent in his little toe than most of them have in their whole body. And last but not least he is still "the" superstar of the sport.

I disagree with them agreeing with the penalty because they are envious or jealous.

I do agree that Rossi is still a very fast and capable rider, I don't think anyone questions that.

oh what a load of bullocks, MM races for Honda and his sponsors not to hand a championship to another rider, he still races for 1st place regardless if he is a championship contender or not...if all riders did that then no one would get sponsored!!!! Why would a company sponsor a rider that isn't allowed to win a race, they want their coverage too for goodness sake.

All this talk about a 'unwritten rule' is absolute crap and is made up by people who think a championship should be handed to someone rather than earned

Rossi has stated the midget has something personal going between the 2, blames him for a crash or 2,
Midgets season is over , he's out of it, nothing to lose, he helps a fellow countryman bring the gold home to
Spain he's a hero at home along with crybaby, Rossi is probally the only guy to walk away from Hondarepsol for another team...........plenty of probable cause imo

I still stand by the hard fact of the videos. Rossi ran him wide and gave him his choice gas or brake it's clear as day MM chose to dip a shoulder and gas it. MM made contact not rossi no mater if he stared at him waved at him it does not matter the rider with the inside can do what ever he wants. Had rossi slid into him and touched him. It's his fault. As long as rossi gives him pavement to ride he's good.

Its because they arent VR fan boys and see it for what it truly is, VR lost it and took matters into his own hands when he should have just kept racing.
