FUNCHAL (Portugal), 8 October 2015 - The Motocross Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs Giuseppe Luongo, President of Youthstream, Tony Skillington, Director of the CMS/FIM and Takanao Tsubouchi, Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers’Association (MSMA) Secretary General, met in Ernée (France) on 28 September.

The Motocross Grand Prix Commission adopted by a majority the following changes to the 2016 Regulations:

Riders will have the possibility to use a second motorcycle after the sighting lap.

In the event that a race is stopped after at least two laps have been completed and before 51% of the racing time has elapsed, there will be a re-start from the pit lane. Riders will start in order of their positions in the lap preceding the stopping of the race. The race will be continued for the time remaining at the moment the leader completed the lap preceding the stopping of the race.

The MXGP and MX2 Qualifying Races will not only decide on the starting positions for the Races but also award points (Position 1: 5 points; pos. 2: 4 pts; pos. 3: 3 pts; pos. 4: 2 pts; pos. 5: 1 pt).
The overall winner of the event will be the rider who gained the highest number of points after the points from the Qualifying Race, Race 1 and Race 2 have been added, irrespective of the number of Races he finished.

Points for qualifying make sense for overall standings, but would prefer the days overall is just based on the motos

How so...it's will be very confusing for the casual spectator and TV...award the points for qualifying but not count for the GP overall makes much more sense...might as well go back to the 3 moto format...typical Luongo don't listen and just do what you want.

edit Sorry I miss-read your post we agree...

The qualifiers are just that, qualifiers. I'm not in favor of points being awarded.
The actual race is on Sunday.

Exactly . .

If they are going to have a 2-1/2 race format just call it that.

How about keeping "qualifying" as qualifying, maybe a little prize money for each race and a purse. They get Fox holeshot sponsor / funding. Why not sponsor fund qualifying the same way.

Races are just that, races. Keep that races as races. Mucking up the scoring just to make it "interesting" is how you "devalue" racing.

Another "fail" idea (?) - sad.

What if the "The Motocross Grand Prix Commission" worked to raise Grand Prix racing to the highest level? should't that be there mission statement ?

I like all the new stuff.. Talk shit on lulongo all you want but at least he tries different stuff and isn't afraid (mx sports) to try something new. I commend him in that aspect.

All he has to do now is have a decent purse for the riders and no entry fee and then I'd say it's ahead of American outdoors in terms of structure and format.

The new restart rule is nice. I think it was either this year or last year during the GP of Matterley Basin that the 450s had to redo almost the wholo moto because of a Red Flag situation, i remember Desalle being really pissed off on camera (he was leading).

The qualification points awarding is a bit weird, i understand the choice and it'll raise the intensity of the qualification races some i guess, hopefully since they pay championship and overall points now we will also be able to view them on MXGP-TV.

I'm wondering what the GP riders there thoughts are on the new rules!

Ahead....At least we can figure out who the winner is...It's a stupid idea to have the qualifier points count for the GP overall...A rider could go 2-1 and lose the GP overall that's just brilliant!!! What a joke!! Just bring back the total time to decide the overall winner as that worked so well and didn't confuse anyone....

Earning points in the qualifiers is valid in my opinion. It will definitely change the riders approach to Saturday. One of the things that we heard about RV's move to the GP's was that he may end up using too much energy on Saturdays. It was a valid point considering Saturday was only for gate position. The value of a win on Saturday is much higher now and will probably change everyone's approach. Fitness always plays a part but now the fitness requirements will be a little different. I also think they need to change the points earned in the actual race to work with this new way of earning. They simply super glued another way to earn points onto the existing structure. Maybe this is the best way, I don't know...

at least the made the qual race worth something other than a gate pick. Honestly though, with only 20 guys on the gate is the pick that relevant anymore?

There is enough injuries with the 3 so to say race format (one of them being qualifying race), now they make it so that you have to actualy go pretty much all out on Saturday and if you don't make it into top 5 regulary, you can lose 50+ points total (there are over 5 title contenders, so not everyone can fit top 5). But we will see how it works out, that was my first thought tho.

Not sure who lulongo is but yeah Luongo is killing it. Everybody loves him and what he's done for motocross.

Hmm? I could see the points in the qualifying adding up to the end of the year , but I don't agree with adding them to the actual event's points for that specific race.

If a guy " A " qualified 1st and then guy " B " qualified 2nd...then they raced and guyB did a 1 - 2 , where guy "A" did a 2 - 1.....guy " B" would win the overall and secure more points.

Maybe it'll make things interesting at the end of the year , but I don't think they should tally those points per event.

For all the wrong things he does I say he does an equal amount of right things. The paddock infrastructure, diversity of tracks, and video marketing is 10x ahead of America IMO.

Oh and they have a 125 class an 85 class a women's class and a 2 stroke class.

Not sure how I feel about adding points for qualifying but it should make it more interesting. It also opens the door for other series to adopt changes to their points system, since now the scoring won't be compatible between the different series anyway. Personally I like the way the scoring is done for the MXdN, with the lowest score determining the finishing positions...it's very easy for even the most casual fan to follow.

I think thats BS!! They wanna listen to riders but instead of doing that they go other way around!! Nice strategy!

Total bullshit rule. This will lead to even more injuries during Saturday races. Think about it, Nagl, Cairoli and Desalle all got unjured during Quali Race. Luongo, leave the sport for what it is and please go count your money on the Cayman Islands.

This is complete bullshit! Luongo and the FIM are doing everything they can to make sure as few people as possible are going to race GP's. Riders and teams have complained about the quali race all year, and now they add more pressure to that race. Idiots!

the have a 125 classe 'restricted to under 16 years old, they have a 250f class restricted to under 23. rules like these kill professional careers for journeymen. If these rules existed 20 years ago we would never have had guys like Ryan hughes Mike brown of John Dowd racing

2nd bike after sighting lap is for what? Mud tires?

Qualifier money grab to increase Saturday gate. Just make a 3rd moto and run the whole event on Sunday.
Lap times to fill the gate is sufficient. Gate drops are an important part of the entertainment package and risk factor. Make them count for something real, not just the top 5 guys.

No problem with age categories. Stop the sandbagging even sooner in my book. Pro racing is not a place to learn.
