You could always just get the rear fender and try it with the old number plates before you splurge on the whole kit. What do you have to lose?

As I said above, I checked the fit and the older 2002-2014 number plates will fit with a tiny amount of trimming.

I haven't picked up the new style fender yet, but I think I will. I re-shaped a set of stock 2011 number plates with a utility-knife and put them on my old 125. I tried to make them look more like my '14 YZ450F.

Your posture is textbook. This would look sick even in a Frankenstein mismatched bike. Style for days.

Thanks dude. I never took a class and I don't have any natural talent. So I couldn't corner a bike properly until I really worked hard to learn at age 28. It's a work in progress, but I'm getting there.

Look at my Frankenstein mismatched gear! Fox gloves and helmet... Fly pants... Gaerne Boots... Oneal Jersey. Haha!

I'm not fast enough to match either. Ha.

Fly, spy, fox, oneal, no fear.

Whatever's on clearance.

Sorry to hi jack this thread, but I'm picking up a trashed 1999 YZ250 and plan on restoring it over the winter. It appears that most restyle kits start at 2003. Anyone have any options for updating the 1999 style plastic to at least the 2009 style? I don't need it to be the 2015 style, but I would at least like to get the front fender to the 2006 style. Which Maybe possible by drilling my own holes and reshaping the front number plate a bit...... i''m not sure, and new to the restoration process and tricks. So any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That 1999 is the same through 2001... Plenty of guys have swapped the 2002+ fuel tank and shrouds onto the 1999-2001 chassis. It actually looks great with the 99-01 back-end and I think the only thing required is a set of custom fuel tank brackets.

This might help:

Thanks for the info. The 2002+ tank and shrouds definitely look a lot better! Time to start my search for a newer tank!

Thanks, Matty. The question still remains though. Will that fender work with the stock plates?
If that can help, here's a 2003 250 YZ with a rear UFO fender and stock "dremelized" number plates.

Those side plates look pretty sweet! I might look into something similar for my 1999 YZ250 project bike this winter rather than spending the money on a complete kit and airbox.

Thanx Brad!
I went the cheaper way with a closeout sale on blue classic 02-14 side plates and then took the Dremel out after drawing a few sketches... I'm not a big fan of the UFO kit plates and I feel the new Yam airbox is rather bulky, so I decided to save money and buy a well needed oversize front disc instead. The shrouds are stock 2015 Yamaha with also a little Dremel work since I found them a little too edgy, kinda "manga style"... The graphics are homemade too, and the front fender is a stock YZF with new holes drilled (way cheaper than the UFO kit one).
Great woods bike that didn't break the bank.

Started like this, was quite clean but looked a little outdated...

Cayman -

Your bike looks FANTASTIC! Been thinking of going this route. Do you by chance have a close up shot of where the fender meets the side panel. Curious how it looks up close. Killer YZ.

Captain, after such nice comments, I felt I had to go down to the garage and shoot a few close-ups...
Wink
There's a small gap which looks likes -and actually is- an additional air intake. Nothing bad imo, especially for two parts that were never intended to be used together.

My starting point will be a stock 1999 YZ250. My hopes will be to get it to look somewhat modern with a 2002 - 2004 tank and shrouds, 2010+ front fender, and not sure what I will do for side panels and rear fender yet. Probably going to do a lot of reading and searching over the winter!

This is probably a silly question, but I assume the YZF fuel tanks do not fit the YZ's? I'm just thinking of options for an updated tank/shroud look.

Between myself and group of riding buddies, we have a gaggle of 99-02 YZ250 smokers and many newer YZ250F thumpers. So I have a pretty good knowledge base of the YZ's and what swaps where. Smile

Its tough to update the 99-01 with the 02+ smoker plastic unless you want to start doing some fab and minor weld work. Nothing off the thumpers just bolts on. Personally, Id just find an 02+ if u like steel (I do) or 05+ if you like aluminum frame and start there..... if I were looking to update the cosmetics and it was REALLY important. Frames and subframes are cheap on ebay.

Thumpertalk is a really good source for figuring this stuff out. Here is a thread where someone went to the trouble of updating an 01 with the newer 02+ subframe and tank.

http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/662116-2001-yz250-makeover/

These bikes are incredible. I'd have a new YZ250 if it werent for the green/red sticker rules in California. But we have found that the 99-02 bikes are more than competitive offroad in the vet and senior classes at our skill levels when set up properly. I really dont long for a new KTM or YZ.

Good luck and awesome bike!

Thanks again for the info...... I may be hitting you up w questions over the course of the winter! Smile

I got a deal on a 99 that I just couldn't pass up. My first choice was an 02+ model but haven't had much luck finding one that people didn't want an outrageous price for. This 99 is going to need a lot of work, but that's one of the reasons i'm getting it for the price I am. As far as cosmetics go, I think I can mount an 02 - 04 tank with pretty little modifications needed..... at least I think I can. I like the look of the shrouds a lot better in that era over the 99. Then I plan on updating the front fender to hopefully a 2010+ style, but not sure what all that will involve. I assume drilling new holes, but i'm not sure how the front plate is going to line up and what all will be involved there. I will probably just run 99 style side plates and rear fender unless somewhere in my research I find a somewhat easy and inexpensive way to go with a newer style. I will probably stay away from trying to mismatch any thumper parts as that may end up being more work that it is worth to me........... and cost as well.

These bikes are still competitive at any local motocross race too!
I hang on to my old 2002 because it's not worth much money if I sell it, but it's still a great ride!

Post up an update as the project progresses! Cycra makes an updated front fender that bolts right on I believe. Cheaper than UFO. Or you can just drill two holes on a newer models aftermarket fender. There is a slight gap between the old style plate and new front fender, but we all use yank straps which covers the gap. Or you can update the plate too...

I wasnt going to deal with cosmetic updates until the UFO kit came out... and then the OEM 15 update that bolts right onto my 02. So that got me thinking..... love this bike and may never let it go, so may update it.

These motors just rock and are infinitely tuneable. We have one that still wants to pull your arms off and then mine that you would swear is a fourstroke if you didnt hear it. 11oz flywheel, retarded ignition, throttle tamer, oem pipe, FMF Turbine 2 sparky, and slightly fat jetting off the bottom. Awesome single track engine... hooks up and never stalls. Bought a rekluse but never installed it as the engine just works so well.

Im slowly collecting parts off ebay and craigslist for a second motor I want to build with a WR wide tranny and possibly 300 jug. Parts are cheap if you are patient. My projects are piling up as I begin prepping the XR for Baja this winter and Husqvarna vintage CR390 I need to get running if I want to try vintage racing!Laughing

Hit me up if you have any questions.

While photoshopped, I think its the best looking side panels of old, new 15 OEM, and UFO. Was on thumpertalk the beginining of the year.

Not sure why Emxtrade in Lux would have this photo on their website for 16 YZ125. Regardless, looks good IMO.

Sorry to bump an old thread. I have just converted my 2013 YZ 250 to the 15+ airbox and rear number plates. I just ordered some preprinted backgrounds but chose them for a 2016 YZ 250. Will a 2016 front number plate bolt right on to my 2013 or do I need to cancel the order and have the backgrounds done for a 2013 front number plate?
4/20/2017 7:54pm
If I remember correctly, the 2016 front plate will not bolt onto the 2013.

I'm pretty sure what's in the UFO restyle kit is same as 10+ four stroke and 15+ 2 stroke. That's what I had on my 13 before I did the Cycra kit with stadium plate. It has the two posts sticking up on the bottom clamp.

05 stock plastic

05 oem air box, oem side panels, restyle shrouds, restyle fenders

vented cycra number plate

Slightly off topic, why does the UFO restyled front fender mounting hole not line up with the steering head hole?
