At what point is riding a wide bike too much

Edited Date/Time 9/23/2015 8:44pm
I feel like people get real nasty these days for putting up any type of fight for position. But I also feel like just because I know I'm faster than someone doesn't mean they should just bow out and move over when I come up on them.

I'm not saying straight dirty your way into staying ahead of someone through take outs, but is it acceptable to take lines away, and check up in different spots. How long is it acceptable for ?

Im guilty of riding a wide bike. Usually get real good starts and I fade. But I have a problem just letting guys by. I don't try to take out, but I feel like I'll make them work for a pass not only with speed but with their brain. Maybe half of its because I used to race the same 4-5 kids back in 2000-2004 and we all were nearly the same pace and always racing hard for position.

Now you race people hard and the first thing they want to do is punch you at the checkered flag because in their opinion all you did was hold them up for two laps?

How many of you just give up position with no fight and how many of you make people work to pass you? I feel like riders 25+ race like I do. But kids 15-25 kind of expect you to get out of their way and want the position handed to them....almost like it's an entitlement.

Thoughts?

For me as long as your wheels are on the ground its fair game. Cross jumping is dirty.

If it's so wide you can't get your legs around it.

Depends, in moto. I ride the widest line I can. Everyone on the track is in the same class as me, so we should all be similar speed. In hare scrambles, I tend to let people by. So many different classes, there's a good chance the person behind me isn't in my class and I really am holding them up.

But really I don't have that problem often, I get awful starts and just work my way up lol

Back in '99 I was at a local race and really struggling with arm pump for the last couple of laps of a 10 minute motoBlush I had a girl hot on my heels and she was pretty farkin fast at this particular track but I wasn't about to let her pass me, so I was taking her wide, blocking inside lines and so on.

We get to the finish line which was a small tabletop after a tight corner and as I'm rolling over it she pulled up beside me and kicked my left radiator shroud sending me off the side of the jump, over some tires, and nearly into the score tower!
Probably didn't help that I was looking back every time we were going into a corner.

We knew each other pretty well and she was super friendly but, she was a fricken black belt in Karate and could have kicked 9 shades of shit outta my skinny arse! She was pitted across from me and giving me the biggest death stare... I was shatting myself, but she was cool after thatLaughing

I don't have an issue with riding a wide bike to hold your position. As long as you don't put someone at risk (ie- cross jumping) then no problem. It's a race, not timed qualifying.

I saw the MXGP of USA highlights and noticed Grant appear to stick his leg out as Webb went by. Made me laugh because I did the exact same thing a few years ago. Battled hard the whole moto, guy got a runon me on the last straightaway to the checkered flag and I was doing everything in my power to avoid getting passed. Held on by a bike length! As I idled back through the pits I came to my senses and it didn't seem like such a good idea, but it was just natural instinct at the time.

Yeah, that would be a bit of a problem.

A long time ago in a race I was leading I rode a bike as wide as the track. I was super out of shape, maybe 50lbs overweight. I got the holeshot and pulled a little lead the first couple laps and then died. The pack caught up but I crisscrossed the track, slowed up before a couple jumps I wasn't doing so nobody could do it. I didn't hit anybody and was able to keep from getting hit. I won the moto with a pack of about 9 guys right behind me. They were super pissed and a couple wanted to fight me. But hey, I won. Oh, my favorite maneuver when I was out of shape was to go into a one lined rutted corner and just jam on the breaks, see if the guy behind me would tip over and block the rest. Give me a 10 second lead.

If you are in front, you get to go where you want, as fast as you want, and stop for as long as you want. Ride as wide a bike as you can and don't ever "let" anyone past, period. No apologies.

Yup, that's about right. If you run a really wide bike on me, I'll try to get around you cleanly, but don't get mad if I park you.

Now if I'm coming up on someone and beyre riding wide and it takes me a while to get by I don't consider taking them out. I don't like to race that way.

This is a good subject. I was racing a Vintage race this summer and on the start we were about half way to the first turn. This guy comes from out of nowhere from the right and almost takes out everyone. I passed him on the next straight but now, that happens again and he's gonna get stuffed into a corner!

I have seen racing being taken to far one time. If it's a local race, racing for nothing of value, like this one was, no contact should be made. Two riders were battling. After the race one rider came in and said he was t-bones in a corner, after looking his bike over we noticed the shifter was gone. Along with the shaft it was connected to. That is a little much. The rest I would say is fair game. Running someone wide is fine with me, as long as it isn't into some trees or off a steep edge, or ditch.

There is a fine art to riding wide Smile For me I would only do this with guys I new well and raced with a lot and I always tried to be pretty subtle but may have been a little blatant once or twice Smile Hell, most of the better guys I raced with taught me all the tricks. I had a riding buddy come up to me once at the pay window and have a quiet little talk with me. I was guilty as hell of doing what he accused me but not to the point where I ran him completely off the track (at least purposely I swear!) My wide bike antics mainly happened when I was sucking wind on lap 3 also for some reason.

I'll brake check my mom if I have to. Nobody's getting by without a fight!!! Grinning

I consider brake checking using your brain. Nothing wrong with out smarting your Ancy opponent.

T boning is just being idiotic, and to do that there better be $1 million on the line.

Wide bike? Your a f'en spode to complain about a guy blocking your lines. That's his god damn job. Your job is to deal with it and out smart him. Seems like this simple concept has been lost on the current generation.

If they are just a little bit faster than you, perhaps through a few sections, I think it is fair game as long as your not too agreesive in cutting the guy off. But if you realize that they are a good bit faster than you around most of the track, and they will probably get by you eventually, then it is silly to keep blocking them.. just let them by until you get fast enough to hang with them. Most of us are just amateurs racing for fun between work weeks, right?

If someone is riding a wide bike in front of me they shold know an aggressive pass is fair game. Not a take out move but a little extra force may be used. I race the 30 pro class so there is money on the line for a good finish. I'd expect someone not to just give up a position just like I wont either. If I'm not mad about a brake check they shouldn't be mad about me running them very high in a berm. Both is fair game in my opinion.

I always have to remind myself that thankfully, most people I've raced with aren't Vitards.

Some of you guys sure are proud of going slow to keep someone behind you. That doesn't sound like any fun to me.

+1

Xracerdone must go pretty slow.. he needs to brake check little kids on 60's and 85's to get past them, or perhaps to keep them from passing him.

Id say this is too wide.

WTF that's like asking if the defense should let the other team score because they're a better team. It is a race you know if the the other guy is faster make his ass earn it don't ever give it to him. Moto doesn't have welfare. And if he don't punt your ass off the track don't worry about him being pissed after the race, if he had any balls he would have settled it before the checkers fell. When the gate drops the bullshit stops. We can be friends after the race.

Yep, a bunch of us on the vet line are friends until the 30 second board goes up. Then it's just business as usual till after the checkers.
