Yeah that place has always looked pretty amazing.

I assume you've been there David, logistically what are the chances of ever holding a GP there?
Logistically... it's a lot closer than Bulgaria so in that sense it's not a problem. But it's not really geared up for racing right now (don't even think they have a start from what I can remember haha) so the guy would have to spend a lot to make that happen

and it is only "one guy".... who has created his dream track..... and i'm not sure holding a GP is part of that dream. If he could find the money and backers necessary, it would make for an amazing race, but for now.... it is just one of the most beautiful motocross tracks in the world and while it is a little out of the way for most people. It'd make a great riding holiday combined with some other tracks on the way there/back

DeStouwer..... exactly.... no atmosphere at Sevlievo, but if it had the crowds, i'm convinced it would be absolutely brilliant

I agree, I wonder if most voting for it have ever ridden there? It looks good from far but it's far from good. The dirt is pretty bad, really it is.

In your original post, you made no mention of it needing to be a National or GP track. I'll let that slide.
The other thing is, Glen Helen top 5? Are you on drugs? It's not even top 20.

Many wonderful tracks have been mentioned in this thread and I gotta agree with a few who say Swan in Tyler TX is way up there on the lists. Also throw in Namur, Millville, Maggiora, Lierop, and Unadilla.

Glad I didn't receive another FFS and thanks for letting me slide. Cool

Have you ever ridden or raced the Glen Helen track? How about attending a race there? To clarify I haven't been to all of my top five either so there aren't any wrong answers.

Just a fun thread sharing thoughts on tracks.but I'll be pleasantly surprised if this thread stays on the rails.

Exactly what I was thinking.

From a spectator point of view (I watched the 2009 GH National and have riden/raced both tracks) I think Glen Helen is an awesome track... You can get up on a hill and see the whole race with zero trees in the way.

From a rider's perspective, The hills are great and I love seeing a few off-camber turns in a track even though they often become "one-lined". They do a great job with the layout and prep considering the piss-poor, terrible dirt they have to work with, but GH isn't the best racing surface or even close.

If the thread title was Five tracks with the best racing surfaces my list would be different. I'm basing this list on how much these tracks represent the spirit of MX IE elevation changes, rough terrain and degree of technical ability required. The layout that Jody Weisel gave us for the 2015 GH challenged even the top pros today and IMO tracks SHOULD challenge riders. If riders want flow stick to the practice tracks of SoCal but if you want to race realy MX check out Glen Helen and REM.

I can remember racing at Mammoth five or six times and EVERY lap dreading another banzai run up the hill. As much as the course challenged me I loved racing there.

If MX was easy everyone would do it.

You are 100% right about the challenging aspects of MX. I appreciate a technical, challenging track both from a rider/racer perspective and as a spectator. I think that is the primary draw to this sport for a lot of us.

Using the word "best" is what really leaves things up to other interpretation here. For me, the BEST track needs to be the one with the layout you really want to ride, the one with good scenery, the one with awesome dirt, excellent prep and also it should be the track where spectators can see a good portion of the racing action in a Pro race.

I think I was fair about Glen Helen and pointed out all of the positive things too. In my mind, GH is a staple of AMA Pro Motocross and I was really bummed when they replaced it with other inferior tracks. I am glad it's back on the schedule. It's gnarly, it's fast, it's rough, it has some epic elevation changes and always a few off-cambers.

I live here in WA and love Washougal, for example. It is by far my favorite MX track.
Washougal is considered slick by almost everyone and the shadows are very challenging. Lot's of people hate to ride there and prefer to look at pictures of it instead. It's my favorite track to race on, not because it's easy, but because it's challenging.

On the other hand, it's really hard to watch a National in-person at Washougal if you want to watch the whole race. With the trees, elevation change and repeater banners, there are only a few places where you can really see a substantial portion of the race from a single location. Still, I love the place, race there all season long and watch the national in person almost every year.

Washougal definitely has those perfect days. The 2013 125cc Dream Race was one of them.

That Argentena track sure looked awesome on TV!

Namur (watched at) was awesome and I fear now gone forever, maybe could come back for a vintage race one day?
Foxhills (raced at) will always hold special memories, those 90s era GPs were awesome.
Farleigh Castle( raced at) is an awesome place, it's amazing that they are still allowed to have moto there.
Matchams (raced at) was a great facility, used to love a weekend there.
Canada Heights (raced at) should rate a mention too, one of the best tracks on the British Championship calendar now.

I could think of many more, Matterley (watched at), Frome (raced at), Leirop (watched at), Langrish (raced at).... But I'm only gonna put tracks I have at least visited, the legendary US tracks will remain a dream to visit one day for now.

I'm also gonna throw in the curve ball of Weston Super Mare Beach on Beach Race weekend, 5 weeks to go and bike build coming along nicely.

Well , you don't have a single European track in your list , and I bet there is as many people disagree with that also ?

Taking everything into account , its hard to imagine a list of "best tracks " , that does not include Namur !

One of my favourites from the past , which some of the older UK boys may remember was Watership Down / Kingsclere . Used to go down there for the Goodyear national each year , and that was a great track .

the thread needs to define what a good track is....

good for the rider

or

good for the fan.

The first big race I attended was just an hour from our home in North Georgia (Road Atlanta Trans AMA) in 1974.

Since 1974 I have attended a great number of ama nationals, gp's and mxdn races.

If good track means good for the fan, Ernee and St. Jean D'Angely win hands down, technical and rocky but absolutely first class for the fan. Unadilla and Budds Creek are good, but you only see max 25% of the action and just have to wonder what is happening for 75% of the time whereas at the French tracks you get to view about 90% of the action.

Here's the 'winner' - at least if it's for the shit stir of the day.

GH - the most over rated track. I first went there in '98, and have been there now many times, with my work overseas. Sure, it's Great to get to a track you've seen hyped for most of your life, but struth, it's an Arid Zone hell hole. As a bloke that has spent so much of his life in / on arid zone hell hole tracks, I will admit to wanting greenery. There are far, far better circuits in the US Nationals. But hell , I'll still be going to GH, for hopefully, many years to come.

Someone mentioned the Isle Of White track - that was something special, that I was lucky enough to attend, though it might be a bit to do with the fun and games in my getting there.

Namur. What can you say about that magnificent / bizzare place? It's, perhaps, comparable to the IOM / Irish Real Roads Racing courses - a bit too dangerous for today's sport. Riders brought up on pinning it on SX/ SX type jump filled modern courses, would not be advised to try a pair of 40 plus 2 lap Moto's there - the casualty rate might just be frightening.

I like the European / Brit tracks - there are just So Many of them, and all so close together ( for an Australian that knows the tyranny of distance ) . France / Belgium/ The Netherlands / Germany - in a radious of only a hundred Ks, there are so many tracks / so much MX industry. I don't think many Euros realize how many tracks they have, and the true size of their Moto market, combined. And I'm pretty bloody sure the average US MX fan has not the faintest idea of the European MX scene and its size.

I'd love to see the Castillo Ranch used for a major race, it's always looked so magnificent an area, but it will remain a private paradise, I'm sure.
Bearuno, If you could keep quiet about our wealth of tracks it'd be appreciated. We are only too aware of the facts but we don't want to own up to having no excuse for our lack of success in the sport. Our little club in Essex is spoiled for choice within a hours drive. Lots of good tracks to practice on and many more which are only available a few days a year and are race only - like Wakes Colne.

theres a meeting on at wakes colne this weekend if you are wanting to ride there- still a few spaces too. You're right, some brilliant tracks in that area of the country (although they are all race only and used sparingly) - wakes colne, blaxhall pits, Canada heights, lyng. All GREAT tracks.

matchams in my opinion, was the best track we had over here. It had a bit of everything. In 05/06 when it was at its best (when they ran the gp there) it was probably the best track i'd ridden in England. Very close between that and desertmartin for the best tracks in the uk

matchams was really wide, nice deep sand so got really rough and lots of lines. Lots of elevation change, huge jumps up and down hill, in and out of the woods- beautiful setting. Had it all really! most of the gp riders loved it.

such a shame that place is no longer available to use Sad

I raced Diamondback the weekend after Hurricane David went through. It had water crossings that weekend to go with the miles of whoops.

I agree with you here. I understand what Rock is driving at, but I just can't get on the Namur bandwagon. The legacy is real, everyone knows that...but the track is crap for riders and spectating. Now Cingoli...that place is amazing.

Kilmartin Scotland venue for 1978 Britsh 250cc GP, amazing scenary.

Doddington Park nr. Bristol Big sweeping natural track, land now owned by James Dyson, vaccum cleaner designer.

Maggiora Italy. Went there in 2013, it's everything you imagine and more, especially with the Italian Tifosi!

Locket Stunning location.

Namur Just for the memories, seeing Graham Noyce clinch 1979 500cc World title, the bar beside track old historic fort ruins. Check out my blog & photo's:

Love it Phil, can't stay away, I go and turn spanners or watch it even if I'm not riding. Not ridden since 2010 so going to give it another shot, Rob and I are number 309 On a KX500 engined Wasp sidecar.

For anybody not in the know Saturday is around 400 quads with 60 or so sidecars chucked in and Sunday is 800 or so solos, mass start 1 mile long start straight and then 2 1/2 miles of big sand dunes. 3 hour race with 30,000 + spectators.
