In a sport where everyone is trying to "stand out" or "be there own person" why can't we custom design our $700 boots? Our $700 helmets, or out $8000 dirt bikes from the factory? I'm just sayin coming from an average to below pay grade if I could completely build a pair of boots I wouldn't have such a problem spending full retail on a set. Sorry it just wanted to start a new thread rather than seeing 15 with 1 persons name in it......

Reason is mass production. You pay a premium for custom stuff like boutique bike brands.

I like the idea of special order bikes. Similar to a car you can get with certain options or packages. But also keep in mind the mark up on the options they offer. Example: for upgraded stereo in my car it was like 2.5k when I installed my own that was as good or better for less than 1k.

Would be nice if you could get the suspension sprung for your weight from the factory. Some day I would like to see adjustable offset clamps and rear linkage come standard.

Mass production for cost saving and minimum order quantities from those factories necessary to secure them as the manufacturer is probably the simple answer.

A custom $700 helmet would be then cost how much? Doesn't Bell offer custom fitment though? How much does that cost?

I'm all for more threads on discussions like this vs the high school drama styled cluster-F's that tend to be more popular.

I'm amazed that you can't pick from a selection of basic jersey/pant designs and then chose your own colors. Hell I can do that for a 1 piece alpine ski racing suit for little more than the price of a stock suit. One off and small order garments are available for a wide variety of sports but not moto.

You can.

Buy a TM. You can pick spring rates, Ohlins or KYB SS, you can even choose your motor package. if the 55hp isnt enough out of the 300 2T, you can get 60. polished or brushed triple clamps, rubber or solid mounts. hand built in Italy by someone who gives a shit. Seeing that the 2017 250SX is coming with a Mikuni, that has shifted my attention to TM.

If a graphics company were enterprising, they could put together boot graphics for the most popular boots, since theyre like 75% plastic now. Problem is, the graphics arm of this sport are the artsy-fartsy, starbucks guzzling, skinny jeans wearing divas and getting them to do anything is like getting your girlfriend to pick the restaurant for dinner. I understand the masses may not share my disdain.

This is a stock bike. Look closely.

I don't know about all that... A brand new stock 450 is around $8000, a KTM FE is like $11,000 (roughly?), Chad Reed's race bike was selling for what, $15,000? With those three options pretty much readily available, I don't see anyone paying any more than that to get into a bike, regardless of whether it's fully customized or not. You'd have to make sure you could do it for no more than about $10,000 for a custom 450, which after all the man hours to get it started, computerized ordering systems, customer support, parts, added production space, and time, you're looking at a $15K-$20K bike at that point. Neat idea, and I think it's possible with the right volume and scale, but those are the biggest hurdles. Not enough people would pay for a fully customized bike from the factory so the cost for one would be outrageous at the beginning...

...in my opinion

EDIT: I forgot about TM.

Here's the deal...everyone wants custom but nobody wants to pay for it. The minute any manufacturer, aftermarket or OEM, travels down this road, people will bitch because the price is too high.

We have an aftermarket for a reason...so you can customize your bike, your gear, yourself. We have suspension services, different techniques to manage the chassis, graphic companies to give you that one-off look, even gear companies like Canvas trying to give you even more custom options, and yet you want the OEM's to offer custom setting and completely gut the aftermarket. Killer idea. (Heavy sarcasm)

Some companies are already offering a level of custom (Bell and DeCal Works) comes to mind. Everyone in our tiny little corner of the world thinks its bigger than it is. When MX companies get to Nike or Adidas levels, then custom becomes easier and less cost prohibitive. We're not that big an industry.

Yeah we think MX is the shit but the rest of the world still follows stick and ball sports. You want to see this industry grow, stop asking for discount codes and start supporting your local shops.

Some of my best years were in a single wide. My friends and I would go through a box of 300 .22s shooting out the kitchen window when it was too snowy to do anything fun on a Saturday.

Wish there were more dealers? Why, so the two people on all of Vital that go to dealers would have somewhere to buy a spark plug?

Does anyone have the price of a Beta or TM 300 with some custom options? Bet it would be the close to a 450 with some after market parts to make it work better for the individual. Just guessing but i have a number around $8500+ for custom changes.

A great mountain bike is around $8,000 Excellent customization options. Buy a frame set from the MCF and bolt on your choice of shock, forks, rims, seat, brakes, shift components, etc. That's for a bicycle.

You really want that scope of options for a motocross bike? Um.....stock is fine for most of us mortals.

My buddy just decked out a 300 beta. I want to say invoice was a little under $10k USD on it.

All I was trying to discuss was, say if you want to order straight from the manufactor why isn't it an option for a few more dollars to have Antonio at the Gaerne boot factory to put a red piece of plastic on instead of white or blacj etc. or why can't we go into fox website and choose our own color way of jerseys? Same style just different colors. I mean you can't honestly sit there and think oakley has $160 invested into a pair of goggles do you?

The MCF's have to pay the riders to wear their stuff and give them the product for free. No clue on what James made this year from Oakley but I'm sure it's 100x more than my annual income. At the end of the day the customer pays for everything. It gets built into the price of the product.

There's a "quote last post only" button, there should be a "QUOTE WITHOUT PICTURES / ATTACHMENTS" button too.

You can get springs from most manufacturers. Yamaha offers optional extras like spring rates and other stuff in their OEM parts system. They should be sold by the dealers the same way option packages are in the new car/truck market, but I've never heard of that happening. I think part of it is due to the customer and part of it is due to the dealer.

The customer who races these bikes probably has "his" suspension guy or shop. I happen to like RG3 for a re-valve and I do all my own oil/seals/bushings/etc.

The dealer has a service department and often has a guy who can re-valve & re-spring for their customer. Maybe they have better profit margin selling aftermarket springs and their own setup service.

I'm not an insider, those are just my logical observations.

I think the thing that annoys me the most more that personalisation of a bike is how long it takes for race level stuff to filter down to OEM standard

The first thing I have done with all my bikes is put a 270mm front disc & a braided front brake line on them, factory teams have been running them since like what? 1990? why does it take so long for something like that to filter down to the show room? I know Kawasaki & Yamaha have 270mm discs & Honda has got a 260mm discs (Honestly wtf Honda? whats an extra 10mm?) this year finally but still no braided front line...

Decent footpegs... (I think yamaha is the only one that offers wide pegs as standard)
Hydraulic clutch?
When are we going to see Holeshot buttons fitted from the factory? 2030?

KTM sell's stock bikes with everything (and much more) than you asked for. Ever hear of them? They are kinda a big deal in MX/SX.

They don't charge extra, and their TM shock is a direct copy of the showa works shock... Only lighter...

They're priced within 200 bucks of a ktm equivalent model. The gp TM team races virtually stock bikes.

Does your local TM dealer have parts in stock? More importantly does BTO, Rocky Mountain, or Motosport have parts in stock? Great bike but parts & service is a issue. Not so with KTM. And the reason the GP TM team is racing stock bikes is there is no factory support or aftermarket support.
