Coming to Unadilla from the UK - Help

Help please coming over from the UK for Unadilla...can't decide whether to rent a camper and stay at the track or get a hotel drive in ?? Where do most people stay when going to Unadilla. I'm flying into Syracause... Listening to Matthes's podcast suggest I might not have picked the best national to go to !?

I live right next to the airport you could stay at the best western right at the airport and follow us out to the track I gotta be there really early tho cause I'm supposed to flag it...

Matthes does it day in and day out. Having to drive to the track becomes a burden when its your job.
You picked a national track with so much history, both national and international. The place used to be wild but is much more tame now.
Take as much in when you arrive. Driving rte 20 across NY provides so many scenic views and small places to stop. Cazenovia is a great little town on the way back. If you arrive early, head to Skaneateles for dinner on Friday and walk around town. Check it out and make it a day or two. The Finger Lakes region of NYS is a great place during the summer. Make the most of your trip. It's a great track.

Utica NY is the closest civilization with numerous hotel options. Book one ahead of time because I've seen the whole town booked up.

You picked the best National to go to. The most storied track in America, if not the world. Watch the old races on Youtube before you go. The place reeks of history....or is that the beer, puke and cow manure?

I could be wrong but i thought they don't allow camping at the track anymore and the only campground i know of nearby is down the road from the track.

I went in 2012 they didn't allow campig except for the amatuer racers the next day... We stayed at a campground maybe 5 miles down the road we booked it a couple months ahead though. Be prepared to walk up some hills!

As mentioned before the only way you can camp is if your racing, or show up with a bike Thursday night/early Friday and say your racing.

Very cool! Unadilla is frigging awesome! Yeah it won't be convenient but the point of it all is the track and the race and you picked one of if not the best imho! Even if you end up staying in Syracuse it is plenty doable, a couple hour drive.

I'd like to recommend sitting up on the hill before the skyshot but if it's your first time walking around might not be a bad idea.

Don't let Matthes bum you out too, he just likes to whine about the travel which isn't as bad as he makes it. The race itself is fn sick. Yes I'm biased but seeing it in person is incredible. TV doesnt do the elevation changes justice at all. Plus there's tons of famous mx obstacles like the wall, gravity cavity and the skyshot. Also the weather is always mild and the crowd is usually pretty nuts. Not RedBud nuts but still Smile

Make sure to walk over to Screw U and witness it first hand just how steep it is and how fast those guys bomb down hill into a turn.

I second Utica as the place to stay, a lot of the pros have stayed there over the years.


I believe in 1997 MC and RC and a bunch of other pros were at Babe's restaraunt and I remember being a 9 year old kid in awe with all the pros there. I havent been to Unadilla since 2012, but I know a lot of them stayed in that area.

(1) Stop at Tony's pizza on the route 8 off ramp in Utica and get two large cheese pies and your body is now fueled for the weekend, (2) park your rental car as close to the road as you can on the hill across the street from the track so that it does not get blown up, burnt to the ground, or poached by drunken gypsys and the like, (3) bring your 125 two stroke MX bike and rev it WFO up on the hill till the engine blows up at about three in the morning next to about three fires, (4) Drag your dumbass down to the track for the first lap of practice in the morning when the riders start cutting the grass. (5) Take a picture of yourself in front of "the original open bikes" banner in the corner after the gravity cavity.....And most important, let Hannah sign your girlfriends boob! it used to be that easy.

If want the full Unadilla experience get there Thurs or during the day Friday and camp for the weekend. Hang with us hill people and watch some amateur racing on there very cool AM track back behind the main track. I live two miles from the Syracuse Airport. Leaving Thurs morn for the wknd and racing AM days. If need info or just to bench race hit me up

Cheers to all for the feedback.... Spent ages trying to decide whether to make the trip(coming over for the weekend only as its my 40th birthday) so glad that I've gone for it especially due to all of the great advice above. MX114 I land Friday so can't get to the track till sat....not sure if you're racing the amatuer if so good luck. Really can't wait now....I reckon it could be a uk podium with Simpson and DW15 lol

I've just treated myself, wife and daughter to trip to New York and seeing its meant to be about a 4 hour drive to Dilla, can anyone recommend a decent hotel to stay nearby on Friday and Saturday? Thanks

If your coming from the Syracuse airport you could stay at the Turning stone casino , about 30 minutes from Syracuse on the NY state thruway (90) and a hour from the track, several motels near the Casino and can always go to casino for food and entertainment. Or could travel New York State thruway, get off on Westmoreland exit , travel to New Hartford , and stay at the Hampton inn or Ramada motel that are on Rt 8 which travels right to the track, about 45 minutes...New Hartford has plenty of food places and other stores...Good Luck
