The average Joe with little or no experience would probably be safer & happier on the YZ250f... I'm not paying for
either...
It's played out, this whole "I'm going 2 stroke" thing.
Everyone knows all the pro's ride 4 strokes.
Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki think 2 strokes are so lame they don't even make them.
KTM isn't really selling all those bikes, it's just a conspiracy.
unless you're in the Baja. i recommend a stroker for Baja.

Side note why not get a 450 less stress on the motor for better longevity. At 17 he thought he'd pull a fast one on his Dad and go out and buy a 30hr 2014 KX450 on his own. Well the kid learned a life lesson with his own money, know anybody looking for a 2014 KX450F with 33 hours. (3hrs) is all it took to realize he made a mistake and is now trying to sell it. He said the 250 2 stroke is way more fun to ride and has plenty of power.
$4800 will take the 450.
From the rm I went to a 2012 ktm 250sx. Compared to the rm the ktm was very 4 stroke like. The motor had more power but it was smoother and the chassis tracked better out of corners.
The biggest thing I found with the two strokes was that with a good launch off the gate a holeshot was nearly guaranteed, the ktm would even stick it to stock 450's some times, and a bad launch off the line would still see me in the top few bikes into the first corner. From there my fitness and skill level meant that I worked my way back through the field but it ment riders had to pass me, not the other way round
I don't think you will go wrong getting on the yz. Just add a fly wheel weight and you will have a smoother power delivery with out losing any power plus all the other advantages that go with owning and riding a two stroke
I have a little DR125 and the valves have to be set at .005", it takes special feeler gauges, and I just can't get the valve tick out of the engine. I look at that motor and wouldn't want to even think of tearing it down. And this is coming from a guy who has been into many Ford's, Chevy's, and various heavy diesels.

2 strokes are the engine of the future (and the past), the facts are that those close minded Japanese (only Yamaha is saved) are too proud or too greedy to go back and re-elaborate the thing.
2 strokes is pure fun!!!! and with the half of displacement can go as fast as a double powered 4 strokes. Less part moving in the engine means also they are cheaper!
Your move is a right move if:
- you ride often and are in quite a good shape
- you know all the time what are you doing
- you don't suffer from arm pump and the following whisky throttle when tired.
I always had 2 stokes, only once in my "career" I had a yzf in 2003..I used that bike for one full year ... then I broke the engine and spent a lot of hard earned money.
The following weekend I mended my old Rm 125 '99, that was parked for the last 3 years...well...I don't remember when I had so much fun as I did the weekend that i rode that!!!!
I was really smiling and laughing under the helmet while keeping that bitch wide open in a sandy track....maybe I was slower but I felt tha fastest rider in the world! (I was a 32 years experienced rider at that time!).
Then I bought an RM 250, I was trained (riding twice a week) and was never thinking about going back...
Now at 43 I ride 4 strokes for these reasons:
- i ride once/twice a month when the weather is good
- i don't ride in winter ,,,too cold
- I don't ride in summer...too hot
- I don't want to risk anything....
- I love that fantastic engine braking of 4 strokes that save me many times when arm pump settled in (very often) and I couldn't grab the front brake lever
- I am thinking about quitting altogheter
4 strokes are no fun! But they are quite safe because simple to ride
Anyway....I still have my trusty RM 125 '99 and a Suzuki RM 250 1991.....I rode them sometimes....and the fun factor has nothing to do compare to riding those heavy boring 4 strokes even if I am slower o the ring- a- ding
between the 2, most people will do their fastest lap times on a 250 2t, but more consistent times on the 250F,
both can be fun, its just what you prefer, but changing from one to the other will not normally drastically improve your results, fast guys will be fast on both
