Time to dump the KTM dually

Edited Date/Time 4/27/2015 6:37am
I broke my headlight switch a few weeks ago and learned that KTM no longer makes parts for my bike (99 LC4 640). Some are still available due to stock on hand.. but the switch is discontinued. So I've decided it is time to sell and look for a newer used machine.

I mostly use my LC4 for commuting to work, occasional trail rides and rarely take it on a track.

I definitely want an open class bike but no twins or other large porkers (previous KLR650 owner, never again). The bike also has to be road legal from the factory. Converted the dirt config KLX650 to street even got a tag for it.. but months later someone at the state caught the mistake and revoked it.

I know about the XR650L.. that's a possibility and probably a little cheaper in the end. I love European bikes. So - what some other OEM dual-sport options? Budget is around 2500.

Going to be hard to find a better bike than what you have for $2500. The LC4 is an excellent motor. I'd think about putting that money into updates for your present machine.

Try sicassracing and see if their switch will work for you.

Any big Japanese dual sport will be far worse than what you already have IMO.

My state is strict about what can be plated. Already tried (and temporarily succeeded) converting a dirt-only four stroke, only to have the tag revoked after the fact. If it says 'not for highway use' on the MSO, forget it... unless you live in a po-dunk rural town and even then it is hit or miss.

I could find an older model (pre 1987) bike and convert, since those are exempt. But that goes back to the original problem of finding parts.

Go to ADVRIDER.com, join if your not a member. Post a WTB ad for the switch in the Flea Market parts forum.

Just keep the KTM. All the Japanese 650 Dual Sports a big step down. Although I will admit my buddy had a decent Honda 650L.

An XR650L is a good DS bike, but far less sophisticated than yours. I have spent the last few years messing with mine to dial it in for DS.

You can get it to work well, but at a lower level of performance. Way less power. In particular, the suspension is far inferior. They are probably more rugged, and cheaper to own though. Think of it like a Land Cruiser.

WR250s and TE610s are great, but probably around $4k. DR650s are too street oriented. About the only real DS bike that you'll be able to get for that budget is a DRz400.

You're correct, for true DS use a plated dirt bike has lots of potential headaches. The one exception might be a 525, I know some were street legal.

I agree with several of the posters here, you're probably already ahead of the other bikes with the LC4. Fixing your switch or finding someone on ADVRider is the way to go. A little detective work and you can probably find a solution for the choke. Or PM me your email and phone and I will help you.

How did you like the KLX as a duallie? I've got a line on a clean, low hour one I was thinking of buying.

I had a 640LC4 for a couple of years. Loved that bike and I now totally regret selling it. Some Austrian chef working in Manhattan bought it from me off of eBay so he could commute from his place in Brooklyn to his restaurant on central park west. Anyhoo... point is I suggest you keep it and figure something out!

650 or 250?

450 is a dirt bike.

You will not even be close to improving upon your current ride for your meager budget.

I sold a WELL dialed 690SMC about 1 month ago for $7,250. That's the Motard to have. Mine weighed 293# ready to ride scale verified, had about 65 hp w/ some nasty tq, 6 speed trans, etc...

Pics for proof:

That's a great idea, and going to KTMTalk as well, where they have a specific forum for the LC4's, parts classifieds, and a system where you can request a part and it essentially circulates to all KTM dealers.

Kardy, ahh yeah, the KTMKardy days. . . . I seem to recall some pics of you motoing that thing pretty hard.

It was fun.. no key or handlebar lock so there wasn't a good way of securing it. Honestly I remember it to be a lot like my LC4 as far as power goes. Suspenders were pretty weak.

Think he's talking about my KLX650R which was the dirt version of the KLX650. They also made a street version that was slightly less sucky than the KLR650.

They're not bad as a DS bike. Stiff chassis, decent motor, suspension can be dialed. Really big though.

Think the consensus, that yours is better than most, works.

Love the suggestion of an RM 125 as a DS bike.

New switch finally came in from Austria.. connector fits up perfect, and best of all it solved the lighting issue. Still have a problem.. the 99 choke cable/level does not fit the '02 switch. Wishing there was a way to convert back to a pull-choke like on most dirt bikes.

Does anyone know if they still make parts for a 2001 KTM 640 LC4? I have the chance to buy one in great shape and just doing research on them.
Thanks!

Just about anything and everything is still available for that era LC4.

Dual sports are cool, but I feel like you're compromising on both ends to make it rideable.

Yes and no. I have a KTM 950 adventure , me and my buddy were coming down La Honda in the San Francisco Bay area years ago . A famous road for bikes when this kid on a crotch rocket flies by us at a construction light. So my pride says lets see what I can do with a weekends worth of camping gear. When I was doing the standing up in a few corners on his rear tire , he found a nice straight away to slow down so I can pass and give me a thumbs up. Last year while up in the Sierras we see a nice dirt road about 40 mph, no brakes or nothing just turn and start up a double track trail up to a look out. The couple of street bikes that happen to be coming up from the other direction just smiles and waved. I have been on some crazy trails in Colorado and California, but not a lot of stuff I could have taken my Xr400 on. Road is no biggie to get 400 miles in. Now if they come out with a small displacement lightweight bike I can ride on single track trails or for hours on the freeway and not have a numb body afterwards , I would be on it.
