Obviously you have never made an insurance claim! If you had you would not of made that last comment. Insurance is the biggest scam that there has ever been. It is a necessary evil. If you think it will make you whole, you are mistaken.

You may get your money(part of it anyway) but the thief still gets a free bike. He succeeded and the problem isn't solved. If it were me and I had the time, I would set HIM up. Like Jeff said, don't put much gas in it, and see if you can get some motorcycle cops on standby. Let them run the guy down and deal with him. They need to be well hidden until he takes off, no doubt he will scout the area for police first, and possibly have someone else scouting for him while he's talking with you. They see a cop, they call him and he says no thanks. I HATE a thief, and if it weren't a 2.5hr drive, no doubt in my mind I would set him up. With that drive, you would have to dedicate an entire day to it though.

Just pass, why would he drive 2.5 hours unless the bike is a steal or highly sought after? Not to mention his address. I've been trying to sell my bike for awhile now and I keep getting people from philly and baltimore wanting to buy my bike. I'm not dumb there is plenty of other similar bikes for sale closer to them why would they want mine plus a 2 hour drive one way? Can't be to careful on craigslist especially now it seems no one has the money to buy anything anymore.

You should show up and rob him of his money.

I have sold a bike and delivered it 400+ miles away, but I didn't load it up without a substantial deposit. No way would I drive it to Cleveland without him leaving at least a $500 deposit, and I'd be meeting him at a secure, busy location too.

Most of East Cleveland resembles a war zone. Downtown is coming back somewhat. The deal seems very sketchy man. Please pass on this one.

X2 about please posting the story if you go through with it.. :D

No matter what desperate financial situation I could ever be in, would have me driving 2.5 hours (regardless of where in terms of inner-city) to sell something that is no way a sure deal sight unseen. If somebody really wants something, they will come to you. I think you have a pretty complete list of reasons to avoid this already. But yes, if you do go through with it, be sure you bike is insured, and let us know how it goes Grinning

If he goes through with it, he may not be around to let us know the story. The first 48 tv show may let us know how it went..

I wouldn't waste time delivering anything to anyone. If people can't make arrangements to come meet you to look at something then they aren't going to have the money to buy the thing anyhow.

I made the mistake of driving 3 hours to trade my 07 CRF450 for an 11 CRF250 (I was wanting a 250 at the time) Once I got there we swapped bikes and rode them down around a trail close by to see how each of us liked the bike. Honestly, I was shocked at how gutless the 250 was...and the older guy was wanting a "new" bike. He was knit picking the fact that my clutch cover was scuffed from my boot...he had painted his. I told him ...uh I ride my bike so yes those things will get scuffed up you idiot....

He thought about it a while and decided against it. He did give me $20 for gas....but I wasted an entire day driving to the place.

In the end I was glad that I didn't do the trade. I still have my 07 450 and love every bit of it.

Get ALL the cash in hand before he test rides it and insist that he gives you his drivers licence to hold until he gets back. And keep it public obviously.

That is not how things work in the real world. I would love to hear the cops response when you try to get him to go out of his way to help you set that up. Unfortunately, there would be a laundry list of reasons why they can not do it.

I always use "my brother happens to be living or passing through XXX. He is an honest police officer and can hold a deposit while I make the trip. You wouldn't want to me to get a call from someone closer and lose the bike ? " usually I don't hear a thing back

You should call him and find out exactly where he wants to meet up. If he suggests the bank, a cop shop or bike dealership then there is a chance he may be legit. If he wants too meet at a parking lot or the corner of 21 and Lewis then you know he is gonna jack ya.

I'd bring two bikes, your bike filled to the top with gas and the bike for sale with enough gas to run for a minute or two. Bring a gun and when he says he's wanting to ride it unload your bike n have a friend unload the other. If he takes off just follow him at a little distance till the bike runs out of gas.
I don't know why you would even put yourself in a situation like that. Just avoid it, someone else will buy the bike.

I would tell him to come look at the bike, pay you for it and you will drop it off asap. I would not go without money in hand first.

I'm definitely gonna pass. I already was going to pass I just wanted to see what you guys thought. I thought he'd probably jump on and ride away. Although I do have theft insurance...
You made a wise choice man. Very good chance that was a complete bullshit setup.

Ask yourself this.......Why is he buying a $5000.00 dirtbike , when he lives in the city and doesn't even own a truck? Or anything that haul it?

I would of met him outside the city at an ORV park or something like that. Would have a buddy or two with me , and I wouldn't of unloaded it or let him ride it until he put the $5K in my hands. If he liked it , then drive to a bank , make a deposit and then drop it off at his place.

Kinda ironic story, I have my sons KTM and quad 50 on CL. I got a text about the quad, but he wants to negotiate the price, I'm $200 more, but everything in my area is shit in comparison. After some back n forth, guy text that he will come on Wed, he doesn't show, doesn't call or text. Whatever, I'm not desperate to sell. He text again on Easter Sunday, WTF, I'm busy right. I text back, lets do Monday after work, he says 4:30-5pm. My wife doesn't like it one bit, she wants his number and says to meet at the police station or similar cuz she thinks its a scam. I told her, this guy is fine, we worked out details etc etc. Dude shows up, turns out he's local Metro police and we BS for 1.5 hours in my garage. Just to help his kids cause, I gave him a pair of boots, a helmet, goggles, enough oil for 2 years, filter/oil, spare parts, a flag and whatever else I had sitting around, I was happy to help. Moral of the story, guy could be an axe murderer or a police officer, however, go with your gut. If this guy would have gave me some song and dance on coming to him and paying me for it etc etc......NOPE. Even though he turned out to be police, I wouldn't have done it. I only had $800 on the line, not 5K, your situation sounds shady as hell, not worth it.

Whats with all these hair brained ideas?

Just ask the guy to meet you at the local police station. If hes legit he wont have a problem with it, and if he is trying to rob you, he wont meet you there. Its pretty simple.

I dont think filling up the bike with a little gas and having another bike with you is going to do anything but allow the guy to steal 2 bikes from you rather than 1.

You guys are all pussies. Try selling something to a hutterite. They'll even steal your shirt and shoes off you.
That being said. This really has a simple solution.............tell him you'll bring the bike to Detroit, but tell him to meet you at the cop shop. Simple enough. If he says 'Nope'. You know something was up.
