Personally, I don't have a beef with it, and dig shooting it. But some of the dirt sections I've seen on courses here look like they'd be really spooky to ride with the slicks.

Modern Supermoto was built in an inverted pyramid, an AMA Pro series first and hope that the amateur/grassroots side would blossom. Nearly every other form of racing starts at the local level and builds to a Pro series. Without that base it is hard to support the top.
Those who have tried it, love it. Many top pros would go there if there was money to support their efforts. Let's hope DMG decides to get behind it.
Steve.....slicks and dirt.....no big deal !!!
Knobbies....we don't need no stinkin' knobbies
You can try it out on the cheap with sportsman class tires on your stock rims. Although I would suggest a 310 or 320mm front brake conversion kit as a pretty mandatory upgrade. The higher speeds take a serious toll on brakes and can warp the stock rotors pretty easy as they build up too much heat and don't have the same kind of surface area as the larger rotors. You can pick up a rotor and a caliper adapter for well under $100. The stock calipers work well enough with the bigger rotors. Just change your fluid more often and use the really good stuff as it'll get much hotter than it will from MX.
I've seen some guys go really quick with the sportsman tires. The 17's are nice, but not necessary if you just wanted to try it out. You might want to run a bigger countershaft sprocket too. Especially if the track you're going to has any long straights. Listening to your bike bounce repeatedly off the rev limiter is kind of freaky.
You could always just go out and watch a race or practice session in your area and ask around the pits. You'd be surprised how many guys are more than willing to let you take their bikes out for a blast to get another convert to the dark side. It's a pretty friendly bunch of guys.
Henry the day before his get off..........
Lumpy's got it bad.
Too much work, not enough ride time, and you can't just go ride anywhere anymore. It's a dying sport and dead for many.
Sadly.
Here is a great link to some sick bikes.
Lots of bikes here

You are not far from 2 tracks. Circleville OH & Beave Run is by Pittsburgh. Hell I drive from Charlotte NC to get there!
Pit Row
I don't recommend it though. The bikes are way too much fun to control yourself on the road with. You will lose your license quick if you're anything like me. Although oddly enough the cops seem to let you go an awful lot on them. At least in Vancouver they did. We'd get pulled over as a group with some guys having no license, signals, working headlights, slicks, missing plates, etc. For some reason the cops would always just let us all go.
The sound of 8 or 10 big bore four strokes roaring down the street between all the highrises downtown is something you have to experience to believe. Finding an empty industrial park on a Sunday afternoon together turns it into an instant racetrack.

I see they tend to layout a lot of these courses on the infields of car ovals. I wouldn't get on a track like that with a bike, ever. Not with bare concrete retaining walls inches away. Just stupid. Isn't that how Henry was injured last time? Slid out coming up the banking and had his body thrown into the wall?
I'd gear up at least 1or 2 on the CS first just for the local roads. You run out of gears real fast on the blacktop.
