My son and I had the local (badass gnarly) practice track all to ourselves one day. In rolls a Ranger pickup with Mom, Dad, teenage son and a couple year old RM125. Kid has all appropriate gear and seems ok. He unloads bike and hits the track. Looks to be a midpack intermediate skill level. Dad, who looks to have or has had a lot of fun with drugs, for a very long time...proceeds to tell me that his son is going to race at the Kansas State Fair and he needs to get aquainted with the new bike. He goes on to tell me how he used to race all the big boys in the 70's and 80's. He knows all the names and tracks but I've already mentally called bullshit. His wife just sits there and nods like..."Yep, I remember when he did this or that". Anyway, the son comes in and dad snags helmet and goggles....no boots or anything else...jumps on bike and proceeds to blow my mind. This guy is the real deal...my son and I have wood from watching this guy own this track he's never even seen before. The wife and son just watch with obvious pride. They finished and left about the same time Bart the track owner rolled up. He asked me who that was in the truck and I said, "Shit man, I forgot to ask his name". I told Bart that even though he looked like a crack head he was amazing on that tiddler. Bart said he didn't know his name but one of the shops had called and asked if and an old midwest ledgend and his kid could ride at his place. All I know is that this one time...my Bullshit-o-meter was way wrong.

Man that is a cool story. Like to find out who it was as well. I had a similar experience against a very well known MX pro out here in the NW. I was racing PIR one night and doing pretty well that season in the +30A stuff. ( This was around 99- 2001 I think ) . Didn't see him in practice but he lines up next to me on a clapped out , bald tire 92' YZ 250! Guy was wearing big thick glasses , gear from the late 80's....I was thinking..." Who the hell is this joker? " Haha.

Gate drops and I roast him out of the gate. Coming into the first corner , this white streak on the OUTSIDE blows by me , and I don't keep him in sight for more than a lap. He then proceeds to kick mine and everyone elses ass badly....both motos! Come to find out.....that was his first race back in like 10yrs. I am kind of friends with him now days and get to ride with him every now and then.....but he goes by the name " Ted Holt ". Super cool guy and a vet that can still drop the hammer! Fun watching him beat some of these fast young kids around here.

I don't know what it is about this sport. apparently every single Virginia amateur racer in recorded history "raced Bailey" and beat him once. But then they had the "big injury" and "lost their sponsors." if you really want a daily dose of BS, work in a bike shop.
Or people told me they won a championship at Loretta's, or used to race against Bubba/MC/Carmichael.

Ha- Well, Mr. Walker, record-setting Loretta's champs get a pass. True story- I passed you in a Vet race at Rolling Hills (in 2005 I believe)...

Course, you were on the ground unconscious at the time, but still. I was running Vet B on a staggered start and you were running Vet A. You crashed and got knocked out. I thought it was cool that you came back to the track later that day to cheer people on.
I raced in the 30 b class that day.. A young Brock Tickle was hauling ass that day.

In the mid 70's there were 3 Kansas guys that really stood out in the expert class and occasionally raced the odd National or Trans Am support class. Michael Krebs (mostly CZ), Gary Witt (Yamaha), John Campbell (Maico). Witt was a fast dude on a 125. All three would be in their 60's now, so probably not your guy with younger kids.

We've all seen this one:
While unloading my bike and my 2 young sons bikes a neighbor walks up.
Him: Hey man, I used to race MX.
Me: yeah, I'm just getting back into riding after a long break. It's fun chasing my kids around. I used to race some but that was a long time ago and I never the fastest guy on the track.
Him: Man, I was a sponsored pro. Raced all over in stadiums. Won a few but got hurt on a big jump.
Me: You want to take this XR400 around the hood? It's a trail bike but fun to ride.

He dumps the clutch twice and proceeds to ride so slow and shakey that he was at risk of falling over the entire time. Both feet out wide and never on the pegs. Stalls in a cul de sac and doesn't know how to kickstart a motorcycle. I have to go crank it up and ride it home myself. Neighbor never mentioned his pro MX career again and I had to explain to my sons why Mr Dave was riding like a circus clown.

Do you happen to remember Mike Patrick? He was a Wichita boy that moved to Tulsa (Sand Springs)? We were classmates there and he had a a shop sponsered 250/400 ride. Support class mostly. He was pretty hot till his knees blew out. A couple of 16 year old punks traveling the country in his dads dodge van. I was one happy kid.

The guy in the service who claimed his uncle was one of the '70 or '80s Yamaha MX factory mechanics. Think he had several old motodrive members challenged to a fist fight at one time or another.

Prior to the depth of his asshat status I bought a KX60 from him in 2001 or 02. The story was that it was a 96 or 97 I believe, he had taken it apart to powdercoat the frame and his kid or whoever had outgrown it before he got around to putting it together. What I got for my $500 or so was a powdercoated purple frame, new purple Excels, and boxes of parts that had never been a complete bike, most of them looked like they had been dropped out of a truck at 75mph. The engine was black which dates it back to the mid 80s. I still have some of the crap in boxes. Luckily Ebay had just caught on and I was able to sell off enough to get my money back. I hope him and his wrestler boyfriend are happy.

It's common for alot of people to accuse me of a bullshitter.

- my blue nitrated forks, yes they're stock forks, nothing fancy about them except they look trick as hell.
- i'm friends with SupercrossLIVE announcer Jim Holley, and i've been to his house and got to look at all his world supercross championship trophies and memorabilia.
- I got to hit ramps with Justin Starling at the red bull compound.
- My dad was a supercross team manager in 2006.
- I raced Langtown on 50s.
- I won a Ponca City qualifier in 2007 and almost passed Garret Eckman (I crashed because I hit his back tire coming into a rut)
- I got to play in the foam pit with Travis Pastrana and watch Jim Dechamp practice frontflips into the foam pit, i also met Ronnie Renner, Tennessee, Scott Palmer, and Tarah Gieger that day.
- Ive ridden at Castillo Ranch for the RacerX Ride Day twice.

That's only half of the cool things ive gotton to do, yeah i brag about it sometimes but im never lying!

Therefore, i'm not a bullshitter.
You dropped something.

I knew it was you just as soon as I saw your pic blasting through that corner. We both raced against some incredible talent back in the day...Crozier,
Bradshaw, Turpin, Dukes, Kizzar etc. etc. but there is no doubting your corner speed and unique style. Unreal. I will never forget watching you at the Mini O's one year on that slick supercross track...with the rock hard, flat corners...and your were freaking lighting it up!! Did you get that from your brother? Didn't he do some road racing as well?

Good memories racing with you, Kevin. And speaking of backwoods, TN...I have stories of Kizzar that would melt this place down. LOL's. Plus many stories racing and hanging out with Dukes as well. Good times for sure.

Stay healthy.

Dang,

I tell Kizzar stories like him trying to jump over the light wire at Candies Creek and people think I am a bull shitter!

The one about him getting in a fist fight with another local pro in the middle of the track during practice is a good one too.

He broke his hand on their helmet the night before a big $5k race at Tunnel Hill.

Can you maybe verify that one Danny?

I seem to remember that. I was there that night but didn't see it with my own eyes.
