I don't know where you guys get some of this stuff. I've had damn near every KX250 since 96' and I've never heard of the problems you guys are mentioning. Let alone keep spares for it. lol Come to think of it, I have never seen a KX with a broken frame, ever, nowhere.
My own experience is having to reweld the foot peg mounts on the '94. I don't remember doing that for the '98, so it probably didn't happen. Had the '94 for 4 years (26-30), '98 for 3 years (30-33), and the '01 for 10 years.

So you're right, my bad! Just so used to hearing frame issues in the 80's...must have gotten my decades mixed up! ...kinda like MXA every now and then! I like Jody's mag though, been a subscriber off and on for a lonnnnnggg time. Smile

Ha ha. Yep. I had a 95, 97, 99, in 250s, and an 08, 09, and a 13 450. My buddy had a 96, 98, and 01 at the same time. We rode every weekend, and we were C class at the time!

Never had a problem except for maybe crushing pipes or bending handlebars against fellow competitors bikes.

NorCal that '05 RM250 is pretty much perfect off the showroom floor, you might just be a needle (or clip position) and 1 or 2 size main jet size away (since you're running race gas) away from absolute perfection. No problem. I'm running a stock needle (clip 2) and pilot and a 170 main on my '06...let's start there.

Did you see who won 250 Int. In the results from Mammoth. Definitely a who's who in the results. Was cool to watch O'Mara and Johnson in the Pro's.

Took the '05 YZ125 to Prairie City on Sunday (OHV), more than a few 450 riders were wondering what the hell is this thing behind me. Kinda had the Barcia throttle technique going on.

I "might" race on the 7th. A racer's way of saying yep. But, probably only for Sunday...no practice Sat.
--- yep some dude name MC, but he didn't do so well on the 500

I'll try those suggestions, I'll see how they compare to what I have written down somewhere Smile

Cya Sun on Feb 8th, unless I'm too sore from Sat's practice!

Whoa! Aaron.....those were the exact same years I had! I did have a 90' too which was my very first " new " race bike. Everything I owned before that was used ( all I could afford being that young ) . I was kawi all the way back then. I had a 85 and then 87' KX 125 before all the KX 250's. Had a lot of great races and memories on them bikes.

BTW.....how you doing? Plan on doing some racing down south here this spring / summer? I " plan " too.....bu I also planned too last year as well until I got hurt in June. Kind of ruined my whole summer. Putting in the work in the gym right now and hopefully have a good spring and come out swinging at some races this year. Hope you and Sharkey are good!

I loved my 2000. Great bottom-mid engine, super stable handling. It wasn't a scalpel in the corners but it held its line. Great ergos for tall guys too. The only problems I remember were a bad cylinder plating job from the factory, super soft suspension that was great with a revalve and springs, the wheels didn't last long, I kept going through rear wheel bearings, and the overall build quality was definitely subpar compared to my buddy's CR. The front brake sucked too.

I found that the bike ate through pipe springs and o-rings, footpeg si jprings and pins, and the levers, brake pedal and kickstart lever got sloppy quickly.

Some guys had trouble with the side panels catching their boots, but it wasn't an issue for me.

Dead on. I'll take those little issues for the chassis, motor, and suspension alone. Very confidence inspiring, unlike my '87 CR250 Honda. Probably one of the best bikes I owned, but it spit me off ass or tea kettle on an slight uphill at Sandhill...still don't know what happened, but the bars shook and I ended replacing a helmet!

I'll take some of those maintenance issues over my first experience on a 4-stroke any day. At the 30 hour mark, lost the lower rod bearing on my '06 RMZ 450 (great bike and had good results on it) and it basically took everything with it. Oil pump(s)?, crank, cylinder. We're able save the camshafts. End result is I sold the bike for a little more than I paid to repair it....it sat in the garage for a while, but sold in '09 to a friend of mine.

Replaced with a new leftover '06 RM250 in 09 and an '05 YZ125 in '11 and an '01 CR500 in '13. No regrets. Will I get another 4-stroke someday? Absolutely, but it'll probably be a dual sport. But, before that a 300SX KTM is next on the shopping list....sometime in the next 3 years!

MC rode a clapped out / borrowed YZ490...that didn't help. Ryno was cutting his teeth in Int.'s as we'll. Probably the last race as an amateur for both riders.

Also, not a big fan of setting the idle too high. My bike will idle (when fully warm) for about 5-7 seconds, then die on it's own. It's a 2-smoke thing.

One other tidbit...Smile . Was working on my buddies ''99 KX250 and the thought came to my my mind...I like those '99 forks better. The bladder design in the '01 wasn't completely sorted. So I looked over at my '01 and said, "let's do this!". Swapped his '99 forks for my '01 forks. He was a beginning rider, so I gave him the right spring rate and oil height and called it good.

Turns out about 5 years later I sold the '01 too him anyway, so he got his forks back! Smile

So you hear that NorCal? Don't leave your like bike at my house!!! Smile

They were an easy bike to ride, for me at least. As soon as I got on it I felt at home and comfortable. That bike was awesome in the whoops, just click up a gear and pin it, it would never deflect or kick out.

My buddy's 01 CR was a nice bike, we had many chances to ride and compare the two but I always liked the KX a lot better.

Hey Jeff! Doing pretty good. I will be doing the Oregon round of the OTMX at washougal, and probably do Top Gun again this year. Sharkeys good too. We need to get down to Mt View this spring.

Spent some time at Clark County until it closed, it's Horn now for us until spring.

Hit me up on FB, I'm almost never on here any more. Maybe we can meet up and burn some laps!

My original intent was all white plastic and sea foam green frame and seat cover. That's a nice color scheme on yours!

Thanks! The pink powder coat had large flakes mixed in for a nice glitter effect. I never found decent graphics for the shrouds (in the colors I wanted) so I left them plain.

What you describe the aqua & white would look nice.. kind of like the early 90's WRs.

The fender is a 2012, and the front plate is a new 2002

The front master cylinder is sub par, swap it out for an 07+ CR and you'll notice a big improvement.

I have a 2000 project also that i bought for 500. The goofball I bought it from let the rear suspension linkage bearings get so bad that it eggshaped the holes in the triangle shaped piece. If any of you know where I can get a used one please let me know. Ive been watching ebay for a few weeks and havent seen anything. The part number looks to fit 99-01 125 or 250.

The bike that got me back into mx after a twenty year hiatus was this old 2001 yz250 I bought for $200. It was blown up, and after I did a parts list it was going to be about $2000 to fix including the bike price. I literally had $1500 in new parts- new cylinder, head, crank and piston, bearings seals and gaskets... and I just walked into the yard, said feck it, and sold all my new parts. I scrapped the bike as well! ! It just overwhelmed me knowing how much work it would be. I know now that it wouldn't have been bad, but I hadn't spun any wrenches in so long I wasn't sure. So if not for stupidity I would be riding a nice, newly rebuilt yz250. I'm so stupid. I do like the seating position of the kx better though.

Yup, she's a beauty. Didn't DV pick up his old practice bike when it was up here for a year ago just to flip it? I remember the ad saying that it was RC's old practice bike but I'm not sure if it was confirmed or not. It did have some trick factory parts on it tho.

I had a 92 250 and a 95 125....both were decent bikes, though not in the year range the OP was questioning.
During the 90s pro bikes got gusseted frames....my 92 cracked in quite a few places along the swingarm/shock link area...but honestly it was a good bike. Big, roomy, powerful and steady as a trial lawyer. You could cruise the desert or the whoops section and still out run a Honda in the rough. The front brake did suck and the suspension was soft and very plush stock, along with the "slopy after a couple months" foot pegs. I cut the stockers off and welded aftermarkets on. I thought the 92 KX was a very handsome machine.

The 95 125 was a similiar chassis, though I made the forks awesome with just a spring change and fluid tweaks. It had, however, the most pathetic engine I've ever owned...even after Tom Morgan got done with it. My buddy's RM had top end to another zip code compared. Just as it got going like a 125 should it hit the wall. I didn't have the cracking with it that I did on the 92, so maybe they got better at building them as the years went on. I trashed that bike for 10 years and never replaced much of anything. Sure it got a couple mod parts but really, original clutch, frame/subframe, seat, suspension, bearings, trans, tripples, hubs....it had the original rims, but they weren't perfectly round anymore; the desert will do that.

Despite some quality issues they were better than some others out there and always worthy of winning. I really have a soft spot for old KXs.

Second that Jeff,
I have no clue what he is talking about regarding the rod bearings I got 2 seasons out of mine, with 4 top ends and 1 clutch and chains and sprockets!

I still wish I had my 2000 KX250, it was an awesome bike stock.... tons of torque and midrange hit was phenomenal!

I am actually looking for a clean 2000 right now.... shhhhhhh don't tell the wife Tongue

Since i started this thread, I may as well post the finished bike. Nothing fancy-I went the cheap route. First pic is the day i finished it and the second pic is of the graphics after I trimmed them to show more radiator shroud. I think it looks better but ymmv.

Beautiful bikes. Nothing beats flo green for me. I recently bought a 2003 KX250 and was really bummed when I found out that none of the plastic companies make flo green plastics for it anymore.

Hey man,

If you are interested, I have access to lots of brand new, still in packaging Flo Green plastic, specifically "Acerbis" for Kx 125/250 2003-2007.

- Shrouds
- Front Fender
- Rear Fender
- Side Panels

I have shipped to various buyers in the U.S., so not a problem.

Let me know
