What boots offer best Ankle support?

Im sorry but IF you still have 10 year old tech 10 that still feels good and provide a good support for your ankles you can't be ridning at a "high" level or many hours in a year. I'm not saying that I'm a pro but my tech 10 lasted 2-3 years(which is good) and then they became soft and didn't provide the support i wanted.

And everyone has different experiences with boots becouse everyone rides at a different pace.

Have to agree. Last pear of sg12 lasted 4 years (they were pretty beat) and currently on tech 10 that I got a deal on and they've only lasted 15 months.... The plastic strap that goes up the back is snapped off on both boots offering no ankle protection as the boots now just crease over on themselves when slammed into ground etc ! So now on look out for a deal on sg 12 again

The old tech 8 with the Full Bootie is what you want, best boot for ankle support period! I tried the tech 8 lite and it is garbage, I switched to SG12 this year and they are very high quality. the SG does not have as good of feel at the shifter and brake and I had to move the shifter up a notch to get the toe under the tip. The sidi look awesome and I wish I had petite little Italian feet to fit them... But my Fred Flintstone feet are too big!

I am waiting to try on the new Tech 8 RS which I read has the full Bootie again!

I wouldn't say boot life is directly related to a rider's pace. Some slow guys are hell on boots and some fast guys can use a pair forever. It's more about how sharp your pegs are and how much you stick your boots into rocks and such and also how well you take care of them.

I've had tech 10's go to shit in 6 months, and I mean shit! Have had a few pairs some make it a year, some half a year. Have been using crossfires, they seem to hold up well, and I like the feel of them. I have a good amount of metal in my ankles and I don't seem to be any more sore in the sidi's than any other boot.

Boots are no different then helmets, they have a short life span. Also, they should fit tight around the ankle and foot, as they break in keep tightening the buckles for a firm fit, don't layer shocks. Improper fit/adjustment is the cause of a lot of ankle injuries with high end boots.
I recommend replacing them every year if you ride at least twice a week and two pair a year if you race as well.

All boots mentioned offer great ankle protection, just get the one that fits you best.

I was mid B class at lorettas when I quit racing, what class do you ride? I have brand new boots of course I'm not out ridding in these things, I just happened to have them and I wouldn't hesitate to throw them on if need be. I could bust out a picture of all 4+ sets of gaerne boots if I need to lol.. I bet they are still in the shop. Ridding fast or slow has nothing to do with boot wear. Take care of your stuff and it will last a while. I have been through a crap ton of boots and I'm very thankful my grandparents bought all of it and took me racing as a kid. Tech 10s get my vote, because unlike you I've had great results with about 8 pair of them. Everyone has there own opinion, gaerne are comfortable in the sole but thats about all. Just my opinion!

I wear SG12s for Moto & SG10s off-road.

The "Hinged" ankle has provided me with Injury free protection for many years.

Great boot as well, one of my past sponsors but you can only get them from motorcycle superstore if I remember correctly because mine came from Italy.

Have wanted to try these, but just haven't yet, they seem a bit harder to find, and I really don't like buying anything I can't try on first!

You can get hurt in any boot. With that said, I bought my first pair of Tech10s this year and promptly twisted my ankle without crashing, snapping my fibula which required a plate and six screws. First moto related surgery in my 25 years riding/racing. I've been lucky to this point, but am now somewhat skeptical of my A-stars.

I have to kindly disagree about the boot wear thing. I'm a 6'2" 215 lbs A rider since 2004. My Gaerne's lasted 20 hrs before my stock Kawi pegs wore completely through the sole. Same with other brands in the past. My new Tech10s have maybe 10 hrs of use and the soles are showing wear in the shape of a foot peg already. That has nothing to do with taking care of them. I have seen numerous fast locals with the same problem.

I just got my 2004 Tech 8s resoled, re-capped on the heels and replaced one broken buckle for a spare set of boots or mud race boot. Those old 03-06 era Tech 8's were gnarly. From 04-07 I was racing every weekend, and riding about 2 times during the week or more. And they're still solid boots.....We will see if my fox instincts can last that long with half the punishment. Time will tell. And to boot (no pun intended) they costed me $278 out the door in 2004. Those days are long gone!

I guess the TCX boots aren't real popular. We've worn them for 10 years and don't want to switch. I don't know a lot of people wearing them but I don't know anyone who, once they wore them, switched (except for sponsorship). If you can get them for that price I'd say you couldn't go wrong. The Alpinestars just look like they flex but we've never tried them. We ride a lot with a guy who wears Astars and has bad ankles. My son and I are amazed every time on why he doesn't try something with more support.

I know this is an old post but I am interested in updating the conversation. I broke the talas bones in both ankles (completely dislocating the right) wearing tech 7 boots. If I do make a recovery I want the best ankle support possible. Any recommendations?

These UFO Recon boots offer support like a knee brace. I used them a bit after an ankle injury, not use Gaerne SG12s. Both boots run a size big.

From personal experience I have owned 2 different generations of tech 8's, the old alpinestar vectors, the newest tech 7's, and 3 generations of the tech 10's including the latest. I've also owned first gen Instincts and SG12' (purchased in good used condition but sold before I rode because they were uncomfortable to me) I personally thought the tech 7's were more comfy than 10's so I went with them. After injuring my ankles casing a jump in the 7's, then repeatedly reinjuring because I wouldn't stay off the bike long enough I went back to tech 10's. I can attest I've not had a single problem since and they've restored my confidence on the track so I'm not constantly worrying. Im not bashing any other boots but as a large guy with big lower legs and a wide foot I couldn't be happier with the support of the Tech 10's. Sorry for the novel!

*Side note: I rode in the crossfire 2 boots following injury and they worked great also. They are just too narrow for my foot.

Avoid the new Fox 180 boots that's for sure. Looking them over in the store I could flex the ankle of the boot way to far by hand. I understand they are for a lower price point but I feel they have minimal support to prevent excessive dorsiflexiin (toe to shin movement) and for anyone who does any kind of jumping they're begging for injury. I'd personally recommend tech 10's because of the booty and "hinge" style.

From my experience, and someone who's ankles aren't as strong as they once were from years or martial arts, I'd have to say Tech 10's are the best for me.

I was wondering about Forma Predators and trying A Star tech 10's but just got Sidi's. Unfortunately most boots seem good when new.

I have recently moved to Tech 10's, and no issues yet (lots of foot problems at the ripe age of 36.) I have been a Astar loyalist, but always used tech 8's, and never had an issue with those. The 10's sole wears much faster, and as far as ankle support, perhaps the 8's stay stiffer longer IMO? Cant mention any other brands, but there as no shortage of opinions. I never had an issue with Astars, and feel loyal to them since back in the day theyused to hook me up quite well with freebies... but now its retail for me! lol!
