It's very true that a camera directly ontop of your head isn't safe, the risk of it compromising the helmets safety is to much risk in my opinion and it's very apparent. Helmets company's should have an optional product that has a mounting slot for your type of camera in a safe spot!
I can agree with that all day.

One big court case after an unfortunate event could have some dire consequences, the picture of the camera lens on top of the helmet would be the way to go if you could get the stability imo

Its not bullshit, the FIM are trying to keep everyone safe, weather that be drug testing or gopro's not being allowed on a helmet.

Stop thinking Merica is the bee all and end all, and just except there are some sporting bodies that rule the entire world, for the safety of the entire world. By the sounds of some of you guys, you would think the FIM are trying to take your guns away!

Life. Liberty and the pre suit of happiness. Does this offend you?

Assuming risk is most things outside of sitting on your ass. The FIM saying gopro is a risk they are not willing to take is beyond logic. Its a supercross race designed for high speed, risk and excitement for the entertainment of viewers. Safety is and its progression are great, but 5.75oz is the least of their worries in regards to safety.

Nope it does not offend me, however pretty much every country outside of America accepts that the FIM have obviously done their homework and know what they are talking about..

In my opinion there is a certain arrogance in the USA attitude that thinks no one can tell you what to do, even if its in your best interests... this same attitude comes thru in foreign policy and a number of other things. Im not meaning of offend anyone, just pointing out a perspective from someone living in another country.

Yes, RV, Dungey, Reed, Roczen, Tomac, Canard and all the other top riders are definietely going to wear a kidney belt so they can start using these small cameras

news flash. this isn't 1980. We don't wear kidney belts anymore

We're talking about a sports governing body taking steps to ensure that helmet protection is not compromised here. There's not need to stash guns under your bed.

How many helmet cam videos have you seen where the camera ends up on the ground not attached to the rider any more?

I ride in the woods, and if you go for an off track excursion, blitzing through the trees, a little cigarette pack sized "DOO-DAD" isn't gonna be what hurts you.

If it's really safety, what about those visors? And have you seen the big wad of electronics and the wind screens on the Daakar style bikes? That looks like a safe to face plant into.

It really sounds to me like the FIM doesn't want people making money off their races with helmet footage.

but why you dont get that they could be made much smaller and almost "surface mounted"? but

guess what, NOBODY will see it.

many also dont get, that image stabilization is very good now and getting better so mounting on the bike quite possible

but again, NOBODY will see it.

GooPoo et all want them to be seen.

So there is nothing wrong with FIM forcing them to make a smaller safer product
that will function just aswell, that WONT be seen so much.

and to repeat they have always looked stupid to me, a large square plastic box stuck on top of your head/helmet.

Sorry to derail this topic, but I just got a GoPro this weekend (late to the party, I know) and I'm looking for any good tips, tricks, advice for using it. Just to give you an idea of what i'll be doing with it...think more along the lines of recording my kids playing sports and stuff like that. More boring stuff as opposed to Robbie maddison type footage, haha. For some reason, i've never really cared for the riding POV footage. I don't know really know why.

I honestly don't know much about them and I'm not the most technologically savvy. I'm assuming the video editing on my iMac will work well for this? Any advice or must have accessories would be appreciated.

Gopros Cineform software is great for beginners when it comes to editing. Its free. You also have imovie on your mac as well.

Generally you need to be closer than you think to the subject when using a go pro. imac will do fine if its been purchased in the last 3 years or so.

Oviously there are tons of help on youtube.

I hope they figure out a better and smaller camera ,I love the footage we get to see from them but I don't like the Gopro's on top of the helmets for a different reason.
Photos of the riders with a camera on top of a cool painted helmet ruins it for me,I know I'm being picky but its true. Its almost as bad as the yellow track markers getting in the photos at the wrong time at the nationals. Smile

Maybe Bell Helmets did some crash testing with a helmet cam attached? They have integrated camera mounts on their Mountainbike helmets. Maybe someone got information to share on this?

If they weren't idiots they'd realize the visor is secured to the helmet way more structurally than the 3M tape that hold an action camera on.

Shoei/Arai have plastic screws who break away easy. Aluminium screws are dangerous, this is true. Plastic is the way to go!

British Cycling banned all types of on board cameras in 2014 whether on the rider or the bike during racing in all cycling disciplines , this appears to be more to do with litigation than safety , as camera footage can be used as evidence when suing somebody . Is the FIM thinking along these lines ? .

Maybe the AMA or Feld grew some balls and told the FIM to keep their hands off Supercross. A guy can wish.

I was wondering about that, I would think Gopro pays the AMA a lot of money and would say to the FIM to get bent on that one.
