I've watched Dave Super Smooth Newell when I was a young kid. I tried to mimic his riding style. Just rode effortless, made that KX look like a Cadillac on the track.

You guy's are awesome, Pustelak the fat guy ripping ass on the 495 KTM, nice post bro. "Chico" Serrano came up to Colorado looking for easy money on his Maico a few times and we sent him back home packing. Davey "sooper smooth" Newall is a bro and the first Colorado rider to figure supercross out back in the day besides Cory Cope who just floored it everywhere and qualified for the night show, Cory was the wrong dude to have behind you if he had a biff in the first turn..even on the easiest pass he was coming thru you to the front, pain in the ass. tip 'O the cap to Trey Jorski from Oklahoma as well

Racing in Nor Cal, Ray Crumb was extremely fast with little to no style. Crumb corner speed was unreal. McCrummen's corner speed was incredible also. Buck Ford was on the door step to making it big.

Saw Steve Lamson at E-Street, sand track, the bike was pinned around the whole track. Literally on rails, around the top of each corner. Unreal speed.

Jeremy Hughes, yes, the much faster brother of Ryan Hughes. Also their friend Charlie, but forgot his last name. James Chamberlain, Mike Fisher. Those guys hauled ass and fell in the shadow of Mike Craig here locally in the 80s San Diego amateur scene. And so many others to list. SD was the place to be in the 80s if you were into MX.

Luckily, we had Marty Smith, Broc Glover, Ricky Johnson, and Ron Lechein as our previous local racing idols. Barona Oaks and Carlsbad were really special places for witnessing many of the icons of MX ride during those days...

Nope. You're probably thinking of Bob Elliott. JJ is alive and well.

Both of them at the IRC Race in '76.

Gary Witt from here in Kansas gave the big boys fits for a long time. Jeff and John Hedden from here in Wichita, Robbie Skaggs, Andy Bowyer and of course the mighty Dennis Jonon. The Kansas fast guys. The Hahns are the fastest Kansas guys but they deported to Texas for awhile. lol.

Jim Pomeroy, RV, Lance Smail, Ryan Huffman, Brad Hagseth, Jason McCormick, Gotta say I cheered the loudest for the 307 of Tracy Johnson back in the day because you always saw him out at the track putting in practice and looking insanely smooth and fast, but was always on the cusp of making it into the top 40 at 'shoug. I remember him missing qualifying by 1 spot like 3 years. This was before timed qualifying. Also gotta throw his brother Ross, Billy Binckley, and Tommy Week in there.

I watched Josh & Justin Hill's Dad beat Tracy Johnson straight up at Woodland. Josh and I were standing on that platform next to the table in the middle of the track. Monte was chasing down Tracy after getting a bad start, and he passed him in the air over the table by absolutely sending his 1999 KX 250 about 30 feet passed the landing to flat. Josh's Dad was probably 35 years old, and Tracy was probably in his early twenties.

Tracy was an intermediate in 1999 if i remember right. He was easily a top 40 guy nationally about 10 years ago.

Hero is too strong a word, but my high school buddy back in Cali, Mark Urseth was fast and had style. I definitely wanted to be able to ride like him. Here in Florida I have to give my friend, Alan Andreu, props for his exploits right on up through 1990s. Alan is now a track owner and doing well.

we must have raced each other on 80s.

my entry: Vince DeVane.

got caught banging Randy Yoho's (Dade City track owner) wife in a box van, banned from the place for probably 15 years..... or so the story goes.

Kenny yoho holeshot the first heat of the 99 Tampa SX. Art Eckman and David Bailey didn't know what was going on until about turn 3.

Anthony "Pokey" Poccarobba is another one from that era. Ricky Hampshire (RJs dad) wasn't too shabby either.

The Bigelow Brothers were an absolute dynasty in Michigan. Kip, Kirk, and a few more were all serious badasses. I believe Kip is working for AMA now.

In the early days of American Motocross, in the mid 60s. in the San Diego area, there were 2 legendary riders. Billy Silverthorne and Lars Larsen. These 2 guys had epic battles.. They both rode Pentons and Huskies . It was standard practice, in those days, to run 3 motos for the 125 experts and the 250 experts back to back so they would come right from the checkered flag directly to the start line for their next race... and would do this 6 times.....Unbelievable. When they were racing Hare Scrambles or cross country, then they would have to deal with Gene Fetty ,a noted desert rider. All were incredible riders , in the pioneer days of dirt bike racing, and all went on to National and International raciing with great success.

When I was 17 or so I thought David Shea (TX) was the coolest, Him and his dad if I recall with one arm would fight, yell throw shit at each other lol in the pits. Then he would break out a clapped out KTM and wreck shop on the pro class. Then Jeff Dement would line up on his Factory Suzuki 80's and well.......it was a site to behold.

Gavin Faith would be my pick. He and his family are really nice people, we ran a track and had a money race the year he started going to MTF I believe 09 or 10, but after the races where over he and his dad came and thanked my family for the money that he was using to pay for MTF. most people just take the money and leave so it was nice and surprising for him to do that. I hope he has a good season, he deserves a ride, he has the talent!
