For almost 2 years I commuted from palm springs to Irvine everyday (126 miles each way)

Usually my commute want too bad on the 91 as I worked a night shift of sorts (11AM to 9PM) so I usually missed rush hour. However one night I traded shifts and left at 5PM.....

There were 3 accidents on the 91 before the 15 interchange, it took me 4 hours to go 15 miles. I swear I thought about leaving my car in traffic and start walking home, probably would have got there faster.

When things go wrong on the 91, they go REALLLLLLY wrong
I was doing construction years ago in the San Fernando Valley after the last Northridge quake. Since it was a short term job, I would stay with my dad during the week and go back to my place in San Diego on weekends. One Friday, I was stoked that I got off work early and headed south to SD just after noon. 5 hours later I made it to San Diego. The sad thing is that now traffic is way worse than back then.

One thing I've wondered about California is "how's the hunting situation there?" Is it easy to get permits? Do people hunt? Are there accessible places to hunt? (and by all means, I don't want this question to lead into gun control arguments, or animal activism arguments, etc. Just an honest question about something I like to participate in).

so cal is crowded as hell..good people bad people just like any where.
idealy come with a bizzness... work from home avoid the 9 to 5ers on the freeways

You would pay a lot more taxes.... Enough said.

But you also make more money on average. As a southern CA resident I can say this. The drought is a HUGE issue here and is projected to only get worse.

Getting a lot of replies from all over the country, pretty interesting

Just curious if any of you are from "small town" areas and if so what the crime is like.

We tried a move up to a tiny town outside of Eugene Oregon. Stayed there for 8 years. The kids went to a HS with a total enrollment of around 75-80 kids. Daynas graduating class was 12!

Anyway I was expecting Mayberry up there but it turned out there was just as much crime per capita in our little area as here in nasty So Cal.
Lots of drugs and alcohol problems, I guess where u have that you will have crime.

And speaking of us being busy with remodeling and the rich down n La Jolla. We are working for some lady right now that found the need to blow $32,000 on her dining table......I will try and upload a pic. Looks like a costco table to me. Iif it was my house I would use a card table and go buy a new truck instead!

Here you go this is what we have to deal with on a regular basis

Traffic!!

red is 0-10mph
yellow is 10-30mph
green 40+

Holy cow. There's way more places in CA than the central LA area.

Whenever I travel near the LA area I go at nite. Very rarely any traffic.

If you move to CA live near the beach and enjoy what CA is for. If your coming for riding moto only pick another state.

For a family live in the San Luis Obispo area as mentioned earlier. Cheaper housing and a beautiful place.

For the LA area Ventura County I feel is the best bet.

And La Jolla is CA heaven but there your gonna pay for it.

Santa Cruz area if you Mountain bike and surf but moto is gonna be a drive.

I know this isn't exactly Cali related, but I grew up in a small town in arkansas (about 28,000 people) and we had a really low crime rate. I will say, though, drugs were present. I do think they tend to appear worse in small towns just for the simple fact that since there is less people you know what's going on with everyone more. The town I live in now is about 60,000 (not tiny but still really small compared to big cities) and the crime seems pretty low. Like you said, it's still no Mayberry, but I don't know if anywhere is these days.

I have a cousin that lives in San Francisco that I talk to on a daily basis and he bitches about traffic, how much his rent is, and how much he needs to learn Spanish, haha. There is a lot of things he likes about living in the city (variety of restaurants, giants games, bars, etc) but he has also said that he will probably not stay there once he has a family to raise.

By the way, if she paid $32,000 for that table then I'm in the wrong business, haha

I'm actually surprised no one is listening to you, because you are right as far as Cali goes, Ventura is a pretty good place to live. I would also consider San Luis Obispo as well.

Myself?...Born and raised in NorCal, sold my house in Santa Cruz and moved to NC and never looked back. Cali is over rated and like many others have said over priced. Geographically speaking, some places (not Sactown or Inland Socal) are some of the most beautiful places in the country. Someone definitely needs to consider the local culture when deciding to move there in my opinion. If your from a more conservative area and move to Cali, it will be culture shock to a certain extent and will feel like a fish out of water. I did and I grew up there...lol

One thing about it, there is no perfect place, they all have their positives and negatives, one just has to prioritize on what things are important and what makes them happy.

NC is a good place to live, mountains, beaches, lakes and MX tracks all around. Traffic isn't too bad and cost of living is pretty good as well. Oh and southern women blow those feminist Cali girls away....Tongue Smile
I fully agree on your NC comments.

Atherton is the most expensive place to live in U.S. Average home is $9.5 million. It's amazing how many people are remodeling their homes.

Saint George, Utah... World class mountain biking, year round riding, Saint George and Mesquite motocross tracks, good golf, good rock climbing, etc. Sand dunes, Lake Powell, Moab, and Vegas relatively close. 5 national parks within a few hours. Ski Resort within 1 hour in the winter. If you need to hit some other tracks or relax on the beach, it's a 6 hour drive to LA.
I've always loved St George!!

Yesterday I got to Milestone at 10:30 & was on the track by 10:45. I was packed up and in my way to a meeting by 1:30. Traffic to Murrieta was the usual Friday-heavy (where my mtg was) due to so many folks heading out for the weekend (tons of toy haulers heading out).

On Thursday I rode at Glen Helen.

This morning, I'm going surfing with my 7 y/o daughter.

Next week I'll do a coupl'a days of Moto & sneak down to Baja the following week & start pre-running for the Baja 1000.

Yup, California sucks.

My brother lives in LA with his family and I visit him quite often. The traffic can be really bad, but him living in Hollywood means that getting to and back from track (Glen Helen, Comp Edge, Perris, Starwest etc.) is usually easy, since it seems I'm always going other way than most of the traffic.

I want to probably get a job changing truck tires or at a mx track or something. I have lots of skills and a work o holic.
We drag through the winters here taking the kids to trampoline parks 13$ an hour or bmx indoor trackshours away.
We need to move to where we can be outdoors year round.
I have seen several houses for rent in modesto and sacramento gor 1k to 1300 a month.
How's your skills running a pair of fiskar scissors?

Machine, back in the 80's i would agree with u that the unions where all mobbed up, not so much today.its hard to explain why i say "mexicans wont take my job" but the union in is the strongest union in nj. Operating engineers, not that theirs anything wrong with mexicans, in my union, if u dont have a book, and the job is union, your not working. U guys are right, anything can happen, if u let it.

My dad, uncle and grandfather all were in the operating Engineers, equipment and crane operators. Trust me when I say this, the plumbers and pipe fitters union that I was in is run by the mob, every one of the names on the board was even Italian...lol.

Southern CA is where you want to be. Cities in east la county and west san bernardeno, like La verne, upland, rancho are right in the middle of everything. You have tracks like glen helen, milestone, perris, comp edge and many more within 1.5 hours. You also have pretty good trail riding near glen helen, lake arrowhead and of course you could make a 2 hour drive to ocotillo. BMX is huge here as well, even glen helen has a track now. Plenty of places to mtb, like snow summit for park and plenty of trails. Besides the traffic, terrible government and lots of shitty people, you really can't beat socal as far as weather and activities go.
Brian Blyther bmx legend is a cop in rancho Cooku.

I live in the mountains of SoCAL. 4 seasons, skiing, snow boarding, fishing hiking, dual sport riding and beautiful, above all the smog and gang bangers, Wouldn't want to live anywhere else in SoCal but here at 7000 feet elevation. 1 hour and 15 minutes to glen helen, comp edge, a lil bit longer to the other tracks. Having said that Im sick of the way this state has been going, taxes horribly high, no end in sight, it really all makes me sick to see how bad it has gotten politically. I have been looking to get out maybe Utah or Arizona but now that Im a grand pa and my kids are in OC I dont want to be that far away BUT when I retire I may not have a choice.

I'm in Dana Point by the beach & I'm the same time-away from the Glen. I have a biz in the north-state & have been annoyed by the states politics, also.

There's a lot to be said about being close to family. My son has parents, grandparents, great grandparents, little brother, aunts and uncles at every baseball game. It's quite the entourage for a 6 year old, haha

Took me 54 years 2 get to LA this year 4 a dream trip.Hotel was super expensive and super beautiful. I'm from the frozen north, and felt 20 years younger the whole time I was there.

Such a beautiful place, but people r so busy changing the dollar and dream, I think most forget to have fun and enjoy the beauty. I'd love to go there and live a simple life, that place needs another fancy Beemer like a hole in the head.

Clean place 2 live within 30 minutes of the beach and my 525EXC would do me.

The comments about North San Diego are interesting. Ya gotta go where the best jobs for your skills or lack of are first.....then when u r settled, figure out your next move. California is a big place.

I'm 4 years from retiring, so a different situation.

Just over the hill from LA near/around Ventura. On the other end there's South Orange County...etc.

Good luck!
