I learned to ride on a Noguchi YZ100 and a Factory Bultaco Sherpa "T/S"...'75 was a really good year. The Yamaha belonged to a really tall hottie-girl who's pops did some mktg for YUSA and the trials bike was my best-friends dad's (my friend, Jimmy, he had an OSSA that was a Mick Andrews model w/ all the goodies...).

We drowned BOTH trials bikes on my 1st ride and I leaned how to "fix" that situation.

I really dig reminiscing about those days.

Anaheim Stadium, December 1975, Third place at the California High School MX State Championship (held at halftime of the American Motocross Finals, which was also the first race ever held at Anaheim Stadium) behind my DG teammates Broc Glover and Dave Eropkin. I had second in the bag, but caught my CR125's aluminum rear brake pedal on the ground in a rutted hairpin on the last lap and stalled it, letting Dave by for second. Stood on the podium with Broc and Dave, laid a lip lock on the Molly Blue trophy girl, was interviewed by the floor announcer, then ushered up to the press box for interviews with the LA Times, OC Register etc.

I guess I was pretty serious, but apparently not as serious as Broc, who signed with factory Yamaha right after that and went on to win a couple of more big races.

That night I also learned how brutal my chosen sport was, as I watched a really great kid named Todd Miller lose his life, while riding his heart out, trying to get the last transfer spot into the main event. He was a couple years younger than me, went to Poly High School and had been hanging around our pits on Friday nights at Corona Raceway. His dad wasn't much of a mechanic, and my friend Ron Sportel, who was wrenching for me that night, had helped to fix a broken chain on Todd's almost bone stock Honda 125 Elsinore, just in time for him to get to the starting line.

I was standing on the infield, right by the flat landing area of a huge jump in the middle of the first base line straightaway, cheering Todd as he worked his way up from a bad start. I was the last thing he saw when he launched a little too far for his stock shocks to handle on the last lap, putting him into a tank-slapper that he fought nearly all the way to the next turn, which was a huge Daytona banked 180 degree hairpin, which he high-sided into, still carrying all that 4th gear speed. His body slammed into the earth with a thud that I will never forget. I was the first person to him and his eyes were rolled back in his head, already dead.

Yep that was the first bike I raced in 75. I wish I had a new one right now and only had to pay what I paid for my first one $1500.

75 on a 74 TS 125 and constantly broke the footpegs off of it for 3 years, I wasn't even that fat then. In 78 I finally got a 77 RM125.

I was riding a mod '73 XR75 in '75. Had a Powroll big bore, cam, ported head, big carb and Bassani pipe. It would run circles around my brother's new TM100. Then he installed an FMF pipe on the TM and that bike came alive and would run circles around my XR. That's back when an aftermarket pipe really did something.

I was in North Carolina at the time. I was racing a 73 TM250 and a 58 BSA Gold Star 500. What a transistion that was between those two. I remember it was fun and cheap. The entry fee was only $3.50 for both classes. If I won on the 250 which I did most of the time that year and placed 3rd on the BSA I could make $30. I thought I was living large. Gas was only .50 a gallon. Those were the days.

Newmann, we had the now hard to find 1976 MX125C's in every Yamaha shop in Colorado during the day I will send you more photos and updates, the bike you asked about has been in the "Vintage YZ.com" collection for years, I have owned three of them. In late 1975, I bought my first "new" bike, the RM125M. The local dealer, in Downey, So. Cal., had a couple of demos that were used for magazine tests. It was such a huge improvement over the DT-3 I was riding as well as a TM250 and Kawasaki 238 Green Streak. I rode that bike without any problems for a year, I put an FMF up pipe for an 76, so it looked like the newer bike. A little trimming on the side number plate, and it fit! Good timesCool

My love affair with motorcycles was just beginning, My uncle would put me on the tank of his 73 Husky and I'd grab onto the crossbar and away we go! That's what started it all for me. BTW this should be finished next week. My wife and son tracked one down for me for my birthday!
