Turned 41 this year and I ride at 1-2x a week and race 4-5x a year.

Not sure what classes look like in other states but in WI the 30+ and 40+ are two of the biggest classes (Open C is similar).
Last week had 36 guys in my 30+ class and 28 in the 40+ class.

It is concerning to see the younger classes so small...

I love our sport and the feeling I get from it. I will ride until I can't .
the people you meet at the races are just the best!
Cheers, Pat
Well said Pat. Even though the sport can be brutal at times, I like you will probably keep doing it until I just can't.
It's just too much fun!

42 and still ride all the time and race REM occasionally to keep my competitive edge going. Used to race Dist 37 desert, but retired after a near life ending get off. Now I just blaze desert trails for fun.

I'm 59 and still ride but don't race any more. I have a blast riding with my 21 year old son. Greatest family time we ever had.

About to turn 41 and off bike for two years. Worst two years ever. I was still wiping the floor with most of the soon to be's before I got hurt. Hope to be right up to speed when I get back in a month or two. I like pissing off the parents when I take my helmet of and they see this real old guy was passing there future RC. Tongue Really I will be happy to make it around a few laps again.

How do you guys stay motivated? I will be 48 in a few months and feel like I am at retirements doorstep. I have been riding/racing for 20ys but this yr I have only been able to ride 2x. Between work, kids sports and life I never seem to have the time and when I do, I find it hard justifying being at the track for 10-12hrs. Anyone been through this? MX has always been my passion and I still think about it all the time. I actually just put my bike for sale and got multiple calls/offers and am reluctant to sell. I am not sure I want to give it up but I am also not motivated to do what I have to do to ride.

58 here and I don't race anymore or even own a race bike. But I do ride single track and mountain trails every chance I get. Which is normally twice a month.

For me, it's a matter of riding real safe. A big crash for me, at 59, is the end of the road for riding at all - by the time I get healed up, I won't ride any more and that's that. It's hard to ride at all when you can't afford any kind of crash (other than a simple tipover), but it can be done and it's still feels fast enough to be fun. You have to accept lower limits of riding or stop altogether.

BTW, I had a pretty big getoff the week after my 50th birthday and got a concussion, which caused double vision for a long time. I really can't rate that crash, but I'd bet it wasn't worse than the ones I used to have and just get pissed because I bent my bars. The older you get, the less hit you can absorb.

48 here. Still riding about 4 times a month, MX only. I race once in a while just to enjoy the gate drop but could care less where I finish (as long as it isn't last lol). I have more fun hanging with my buddies at the track then I do hanging around all day for two motos.

I am at a weird point. Up until two years ago, I was at the gym and eating right. But now I'm drinking tons of sodas and have done the least amount of physical activities ever. I can feel it while paddle boarding and other things I used to do. Motivation is low but kids now in college so no excuses. Riding is going to be a rude awakening I'm sure.

42 and was going to hang it up after a crash this spring that had me spend a night in the hospital. Luckily I have a supportive wife that told me to go back out there as she knows it's a passion of mine even though I'm not great at it. Attended my first race of the year last weekend, had a great time racing some friends, even though I was pizzed I got passed on the last lap, but gives me some incentive to work on my weaknesses (many!)

I think it boils down to " me time ".........everyone needs that every now and then. Even though I am not married , every day life can take charge. But I do my best to find the time ( and schedule it ) to go out and ride. You have to have some private time wih your riding buddies , kids , whomever.......and go ride your bike.

For me......the riding is one of the only things that helps me keep sane. It gives me a chance to just get away from everything , pound out my frustrations......and not think about anything else but how I'm going to hit the next corner , hit the next jump , or pass the dude in front of me.

Weather it's MX or not......I think everyone needs some "me time " to just escape. We'll go insane or get depressed if we don't. At least it's that way for me.

Don't sell your bike until you get to a point where you just can't ride any more. You'll regret it....and it's harder to get back into it if you do.

Another big plus to riding that people sometimes forget.....it's great exercise! It's one of the main reasons that have helped me get back into it.

Jeffro Riding, or the thought of, is what has motivated me to try to stay in shape as well. I have been road biking now for a few years to stay in shape for moto and the pain and suffering on a ride is addicting just like moto. The "me" time is very valid and I need to think more about that and remember that MX was always my escape from life's trials. I was supposed to meet some buddies at a track today but woke up and didn't feel like driving the 90minutes. Instead I spun some laps on my '87 CR around my beat up track at my house and instantly felt better when I was done. I don't drink and have few vices other than my kids sports and moto. I need to remember that and how I feel when I am done riding next time I wake up and don't feel like driving to ride.

Well....there ya go! Even if you don't feel like loading up and making the drive....you have a track in your back yard! I bet 98% here don't have that haha. I try to exercise more during the riding season. It's a vicious circle ( Actually vicious is the wrong word.....pleasant I think fits ) .......you workout to stay in shape for moto.....but doing moto helps you stay in shape.

You have your bumps and bruises for the most part every now and then.....but Christ , I haven't gotten to the age of wanting to sit on a fishing boat all day drinking beer , or go to the golf course and drink beer. I'd rather moto with my buddies all day , bench race.....and have a couple beers haha. Good times that are hard to beat.

I hear ya white knuckle. I'm 57 and still love riding mx, but I get pissed when I get banged up.
I had a hard getoff about 2 months ago.
Went over the bars and landed flat on my back.

Knocked the wind out of me, bruised a rib and pulled a muscle in my shoulder/neck. Still not 100%. Just don't come back like I used to and it sucks. I stay in shape running and going to the gym but that only helps so much. Plus I wear all the protective gear I can.
I'm lucky as well to have a wonderful wife. Never say's anything about wanting me to quit riding. She knows how much I love it. Only thing she says is "be careful and try not to crash". Easier said than done. lol

Finally going to get back on the scooter this coming weekend.
Like some guys have said on here, I'm going to have to back it down a bit and just have fun.

This is my fun from Sunday. I'm 41. This is 30a/b moto and 2 plus 40b motos. All the action is in the first couple laps. Overall 1st in 30b and 2nd in 40b. I left the track on my 132 mile drive home with a huge smile thinking about all the fun I just had and thanking the Lord for keeping me safe. Also the oldest guy I race with showed up with a new bike. He is 54.[url=t http://youtu.be/tMecjXLYlXE] http://youtu.be/-PQfOP-sEmo http://youtu.be/bPTNujAAFzE The guy on the YZ 490 is the one that had the funny (mechanic wanted for overweight Lorettas rider) He had a new modded crf 450 in his van but wanted to get his suspension dialed on the old YZ.

Hell no you're never to old to start. Find a bike and get with it. If you can find a track with a cool owner that will teach you the ropes that would help. If you lived closer I would help ya out.

Thanks I was looking at getting a road legal 125(ktm exc) over here you can get a cbt which is the precursor to a full road bike license which you can ride up to a 125cc bike on. I thought get the bike pass the cbt learn to ride it on the road for a bit then get into offroad enduro. Ive rode downhill mtb for 5 years with two pretty major injuries which required metalwork I kind of find that getting injured now is not really an option as being an engineer in the UK means no sick pay when you take a fall and are off work. Tbh I would love to ride full on moto as I love anything that goes fast I raced karts as a kid to a teenager but just never got into bikes as no one around me rode. It just seems that maybe mx is that little bit too risky now I am older and have responsibility so thought maybe enduro/woods riding is the way to go.

You can have a ton of fun riding dualsports too. Just get some training in a big open area/field is best to learn on before you try any single track through trees.

"I've rode downhill mtb for 5 years" with a two stroke downhill is the same as on a mtb ( two strokes have almost no engine braking, hit it in neutral and go downhill) that being said, with a 125cc uphill can be hard
sold my 200 exc because it was too light for the mountains in Romania 300 exc is the ultimate enduro bike IMO

I am limited to 125cc otherwise it will cost me a couple of thousand pounds to get a full bike licence which I will never really use as riding on the road is not what I want to do other than riding from one offroad area to another. Only other option is if I go full moto and get a 250cc but I think a 125 will be a handful for me having never ridden so I imagine a 250 will be too much.

I am limited to 125cc otherwise it will cost me a couple of thousand pounds to get a full bike licence which I will never really use as riding on the road is not what I want to do other than riding from one offroad area to another. Only other option is if I go full moto and get a 250cc but I think a 125 will be a handful for me having never ridden so I imagine a 250 will be too much.
the nr 300 scare off some people but it's nothing like a MX bike, heavier flywheel and geared differently a 300 exc is more like a mellow 250 sx and a 200 exc is more like a 150 sx

Enduro is pretty safe it's all about technique and determination more than RAW speed

PS 200 exc is the same engine as a 125 exc, only different cylinder Wink

Does the 200exc look different from the outside engine wise?

Different exhaust pipe that's why the engine looks different
exc comes stock with two exhaust pipes the road legal catalytic (slow down the bike) and the non catalytic (at a few HP)

250/300 exc Wheelbase 1,482 ± 10 mm Weight 101.9 / 102.1 kg
125/200 exc Wheelbase 1,471 ± 10 mm Weight 94 / 99.5 kg (extra weight e-starter)
