CRAZY-FUN!
And I am 45 as well... I am not nearly as fast as I once was, but riding is fantastic for my mental state....
Edit: I'm 51 and I'm pretty sure I'll be riding a '15 CRF450R at the GNCC...probably Florida.
23 years in the army and counting, 4 deployments and they say RIDING is too dangerous???
WTF????
Sorry mom... I started riding again for my own sanity
As for me ( and I know this thread is old ).......I'm 46 and been back into MX for the past 3yrs after taking 6yrs off. After my last big wreck , that was it....I was done and never coming back. 3 weeks i the damn hospital was just something I never wanted to do again. Double punctured lungs on top of a bunch of broken bones took me forever to feel good again. I still have issues with my breathing. And even though I have had a few injuries since returning to the sport , I'm really glad I did. Can't find anything on this planet that gets my blood pumping like this sport does. 35yrs in this sport!
I've found out that no matter how hard I exercise and train on the bike....at this age I never feel 100% any more. The last couple months have been hell on me with a few health issues , but hopefully I'm on the down hill side of those. Really looking forward to start riding again here in a few weeks ( hopefully being the key word there ). The PNW has some awesome fall riding and I can't wait! We got lucky last year and rode all the way up till the middle of Dec before it got really bad. I'll hit it hard this fall and then take a winter break and come out swinging again in spring. Hope to try a few races next year as well.
Thanks not needed, it has been my pleasure to serve my country and we certainly don't do it for the accolades... But we appreciate the support for sure!!!!
I also have had some pretty good get offs, not to your extent thankfully, but I have enough metal pins, wires and screws holding me together that's for sure! I try to ride every weekend that I can, and I'm a different person when I get back from the track. Hell a bad day of riding is better than a good day of doing anything else as far as I can tell. I will try to ride straight through the winter if I can here in reno, looks like I'm being transferred to Las Vegas next spring and I hear the moto scene is lacking down there!
I will never stop riding again until I decide it's time or I just can't anymore!!!!
What I've found is that guys that are still riding in there 40's or over are pretty good riders. Not many take up riding after 40 and then race. Most have ridden or raced for years.
Don't mean to put you off tho. Go for it!
Like a lot of you guys, I've got out of mx a few times since I started back in 1973. Tried street bikes, mtb, golf and cycling.
But I always came back to moto. As some have said, nothing can quite replace it and it gets in your blood.
For me, I just stay very fit and have fun. I don't push it near like I used to but I'm having as much fun as I ever have.
I do think 4 strokes have made the sport more fun too. They're just so much easier to ride.
Especially for and old guy with diminishing skills. lol
Anyway as they saying goes, "when you get older you can spend your time living, or spend your time dying".
I choose the former.
Btw BVM, Thank you for your service!!
Anyway, race a C class or B\C class. In GNCC, they have a 40C class for you. I'm too intimidated to try GNCC. I've been to the Ironman and watched several times and I don't think I could make it around that track once. Deep ditches, vertical hills, it looks real gnarly. But hey, if you want to, go for it. I would definitely look for some local grand prix, hare scramble races before trying any GNCC.
Good luck, be safe, have fun ! Oh, one more thing......... I wouldn't start out on a 450. Thats too much bike for a beginner. 250 tops.
Pit Row
Get out there and enjoy yourself, you are not getting any younger.
You don't quit riding because you get old....You get old because you quit riding!
Paw Paw
the thumper is ok if you know the guy...
If you CAN afford it, GO for it. chances are you will live longer.
I love our sport and the feeling I get from it. I will ride until I can't .
the people you meet at the races are just the best!
Cheers, Pat
