Ok, l age has nothing to do with it at all! It's the physical conditioning and mental attitude that controls this. I will be 70 shortly and I have an mx riding buddy that is pushing 77 and we still ride a lot, as we are both retired and we race from time to time.
My doctors love our physical conditioning, but mine too is concerned about our physical well being riding as he has a son that races a lot too. FYI: Our local track owner is also about 67 and he rides with us a lot and he races some big national vintage events and last year won his class championship.

So don't let age be the issue. Get as physical fit as possible, ride and have fun.

I've been reading Vital for a couple years and never really felt the need to post anything, but this thread is so motivating and inspiring that I couldn't help myself! I'm creeping up on 33, married with 3 boys, and was beginning to believe that maybe I am too old to be dabbling in such nonsense. I love this sport. It's the greatest on Earth and I'm tired of watching from the fence and the couch.

hi yall, newbie here, just getting into MX because my 6 year old boy wanted to race and so we are! I rode street bike back in the day, I`m 40 and I`m itching to take on MX, have I lost my wig?! , I`m a paramedic and had the pleasure to work at Loretta Lynn's AMA amateur finals this year, and the GNCC also at Loretta Lynn's ranch, and boy do I have the bug!!, I`ve never raced before, except with buddies thru the woods as a teen, but never for real, is there a beginner class for 40 + ? or am I going to be the only tard with training wheels!? lol I look and feel 30, but still 40 with a mortgage to pay and 2 kids and a wife to support, but I feel this is the calling I missed as a kid. so what yall think? I`ve lost my marbles? thanks.

After twenty years away from mx (the bikes only-ive never raced) I'm back into riding and wish I'd never stopped. I'm in anguish at how much of my good years I wasted by not sticking to riding. Getting out of riding made it possible for me to pick up a massive addiction to various drugs that never would've happened had I kept up my riding. My life was literally ruined by getting out of this sport/hobby. I'm back though, drug free, but my body is in bad shape lol. I'm still loving it!

I'm 45 and ride MX tracks regularly. The body don't like it, but the mind can't live without it. I'm still pushing my limits and trying to keep up with (and pass) the kids.

I also ride some trails, and I'd love to ride the dez regularly, if it was nearby.
This...

And I am 45 as well... I am not nearly as fast as I once was, but riding is fantastic for my mental state....

So my question is, there is a class for 40+ newbies? I've been reading a lot about GNCC and MX , so next question is what type of bike? I'm 5'10, 195lbs regular frame, not chubby not skinny. 250?

A lot of happy riders at the GNCC's on 250/300 2Ts. I'm gonna ride one next-year on a 450 4T.

Edit: I'm 51 and I'm pretty sure I'll be riding a '15 CRF450R at the GNCC...probably Florida.

41 years old and just got back into it after 12 years off.... Biggest mistake I ever made was listening to everyone saying it's TOO DANGEROUS!!!!

23 years in the army and counting, 4 deployments and they say RIDING is too dangerous???

First off BVM.....thanks for your military contribution and helping making our country safe! You guys are the real heroes of this country!

As for me ( and I know this thread is old ).......I'm 46 and been back into MX for the past 3yrs after taking 6yrs off. After my last big wreck , that was it....I was done and never coming back. 3 weeks i the damn hospital was just something I never wanted to do again. Double punctured lungs on top of a bunch of broken bones took me forever to feel good again. I still have issues with my breathing. And even though I have had a few injuries since returning to the sport , I'm really glad I did. Can't find anything on this planet that gets my blood pumping like this sport does. 35yrs in this sport!

I've found out that no matter how hard I exercise and train on the bike....at this age I never feel 100% any more. The last couple months have been hell on me with a few health issues , but hopefully I'm on the down hill side of those. Really looking forward to start riding again here in a few weeks ( hopefully being the key word there ). The PNW has some awesome fall riding and I can't wait! We got lucky last year and rode all the way up till the middle of Dec before it got really bad. I'll hit it hard this fall and then take a winter break and come out swinging again in spring. Hope to try a few races next year as well.

Jeff,

Thanks not needed, it has been my pleasure to serve my country and we certainly don't do it for the accolades... But we appreciate the support for sure!!!!

I also have had some pretty good get offs, not to your extent thankfully, but I have enough metal pins, wires and screws holding me together that's for sure! I try to ride every weekend that I can, and I'm a different person when I get back from the track. Hell a bad day of riding is better than a good day of doing anything else as far as I can tell. I will try to ride straight through the winter if I can here in reno, looks like I'm being transferred to Las Vegas next spring and I hear the moto scene is lacking down there!

I will never stop riding again until I decide it's time or I just can't anymore!!!!

Mate, just go out there and have fun. That's why we do it after all.

What I've found is that guys that are still riding in there 40's or over are pretty good riders. Not many take up riding after 40 and then race. Most have ridden or raced for years.

Don't mean to put you off tho. Go for it!

I'm not in my 40's, I'm 57. Is it ok to join in on this thread? lol

Like a lot of you guys, I've got out of mx a few times since I started back in 1973. Tried street bikes, mtb, golf and cycling.
But I always came back to moto. As some have said, nothing can quite replace it and it gets in your blood.

For me, I just stay very fit and have fun. I don't push it near like I used to but I'm having as much fun as I ever have.
I do think 4 strokes have made the sport more fun too. They're just so much easier to ride.

Especially for and old guy with diminishing skills. lol

Anyway as they saying goes, "when you get older you can spend your time living, or spend your time dying".
I choose the former.

Btw BVM, Thank you for your service!!

Like you, I started real late. I was 38. For motocross, we have a 30 B\C class that I usually run. I don't know what classes you have down there, but don't make the mistake I did. I thought "cool..... 30 + class. just some slow older dudes like me". HAH ! Yeah, they're older ........... older A riders ! Look at John Grewe 45+. Dude still wins the 25+ class.

Anyway, race a C class or B\C class. In GNCC, they have a 40C class for you. I'm too intimidated to try GNCC. I've been to the Ironman and watched several times and I don't think I could make it around that track once. Deep ditches, vertical hills, it looks real gnarly. But hey, if you want to, go for it. I would definitely look for some local grand prix, hare scramble races before trying any GNCC.

Good luck, be safe, have fun ! Oh, one more thing......... I wouldn't start out on a 450. Thats too much bike for a beginner. 250 tops.

Turned 40 back in Jan... still riding and racing. Been racing on and off since 1987. Crashing hurts more than it used to.. but still fun as hell.

46, well for another 2 months anyway. I have been at it since I was 10, I still do the odd race or 2, though mostly do trail rides now. 5 hour Pony Express races are not always fun, until after you finish them.

Get out there and enjoy yourself, you are not getting any younger.

The truth is most of the people under 40 can't afford to buy these new 4 strokes, If your looking used, go smoker or maybe
the thumper is ok if you know the guy...

If you CAN afford it, GO for it. chances are you will live longer.
