Hi, I'm Manny.
I design, egineer, make, test & sell Composite stuff for a living...Carbon-fiber, Fiberglass, Kevlar...oh, hey, all the same materials that go into a helmet!
I've been working with these materials since 1984:
Trident Missile, a few Satellites, F/A-18, F-22, F-35...helmets for the guys that fly'em, too...etc.
Even some Marine stuff for waaaay down in the "trench"...you know, stuff like that.

I wear a TLD SE3.

You're not gonna hear me tell you that my SE3 isn't as good as a Shoei; because, it IS as good as a Shoei.
You're not gonna hear me tell you that an Airoh isn't any good; because, it is. It's simply a "One Hit Wonder"...which is why it's soooo light and soooo trick! If you are willing to replace it after any real contact? Go get one. They are petty cool, if ya ask me.
If you look into the testing stds and the various rating these helmets receive, you can make a good-well-informed decision.

Good luck.

damn! that's a bold move, cotton! May I ask (and this is a legitimate question), what are your qualifications to make your statement about the Shoei vs. the TLD? Are you an engineer, designer, helmet builder, test dummy?

I was using the Thor Force helmet for the past 2 years & liked it, but decided I was ready to update my helmet. I really liked the one Chiz & Nate Adams have been wearing, the HJC RPHA X. I've never liked HJC, but their new high end helmet had alot of good reviews.

Its DOT2010 & Snell approved, it has dual layer EPS, Cool4ever liner, its made of carbon fiber, aramid & fiberglass & is super light! I really like this helmet. Its really comfy & feels really good. My head stays really cool & my neck doesn't hurts after hours of riding or racing.

It retails for $369-$399, but if you shop around online, you can get a decent deal on it.

Currently wearing a Fly F2 and I really like it. My next helmet will be an Airoh however. I wear a L in Fly, TLD, and Shoei, anyone have an idea if I should be wearing a L Airoh? If I get one it will be ordered from BTO most likely and I'd like to get it right the first time.

Thanks

I'm confused about the Shiva. Is it a mountain bike or MX helmet? BTW, it is already available to buy.

Call me out?
Mis-truths?
Show me.

As for the Quid-pro-Quo of all of this? You can say whatever you want, this is the web, fine. I've hit the ground REALLY HARD in a TLD...kept me in rehab and off the bike for 6 months. Hit my head really, really hard. T L D, NO Head-Injury...or neck (Leatt!), Thank you.

Then there's this & it makes you out to "look the fool"...I ended with the statement about "std's & ratings".

Then there's this II:

If you ever so much as want to meet in person and discuss composites? I'm available. As Doc Holliday said,"Say when."; but, there better be some Stella available.

I think most brands top offering discussed here are very comparable. I think it comes down to personal preference and more importantly, how a particular helmet fits a persons head. I currently own Fly's top of the line Stryper and a Shoei VFX-W. Both are outstanding in their own rite. The Shoei fits my head better and because of that, it is more comfortable. The Fly feels lighter and may be slightly more ventilated. I've crashed in both with no serious consequences. Because of the comfort, I almost always wear the Shoei.

Do yourself a favor and go try it on first.
People don't have the same head shape and some helmets fit some heads better than other.
Get the wrong one and hello pressure points and/or headaches.

I too would like to hear how you know this? What is your background with these helmets and what credibility do you have that will make any of us care one bit? Most would be led to believe that the Shoei is a better quality helmet due to their history, but that really doesn't mean anything when it comes down to it.

Bto has it listed but none available in any size. It's a combo, super light, built for two sports helmet. Looking forward to trying it out.

The thing is, concussions are actually your brain banging into the inside of your skull as a result of rapid deceleration.

I'm not sure that any helmet exists today that will prevent that sudden stop. Protect your skull from cracking like an egg, sure.

I'd just had enough.

If the Vital Media-Crew wants to line up a bunch of helmets, I'd be willing to send'em out for 3rd party impact tests & we could cut'em down the center, post-testing, and analyze the fibers and materials for a clear definition of who makes/uses what materials.

Btw, I've worn the TLD SE3, Fly F2 Carbon and at a few events the Fox V4....I've hit the ground in all of them. I've hit the ground Really Hard in TLD & Fly. Haven't hit my head too hard in the Fox; but, it sure is Comfy. VERY Comfy!

Funny, I can point out my parts on a Factory Honda, JGR Yamaha, Andrew's KTM...yet, I have to read some epic bullshit from a know-nothing like Coaltrain in here & it sets me off.

Sorry if I offended anyone; but, this stuff matters to me.

My bad.

Unfortunately there are no local dealers that stock them. It's actually tough to find high end helmets in stock at most dealers here anyway. But when you ask if they carry Airoh, the parts guys say yeah we carry Arai.

I know it's not the ideal situation; but, I'd see if someone at the track would let you try theirs on...?

I've handled/set-up some Airoh helmets during the SX season and you can use different size liners inside the various size shell: like a mix of med-small liner parts in a medium shell to fit it to your head better. Ivan ran small cheek pads w/ medium main liner.

Leo Vince USA is the importer & you can probably ask them where you can go locally to try one on.

Just got off the phone with the Airoh race-rep & he said they size-up normal.

Good luck.

I can't dish out 745 every time I crash. I had the helmet for 3 weeks. I get that I can get a warranty in it but the guy I called said that the warranty won't go into affect. He said that if I hit my head hard enough to blow out my eardrum (which I did by falling in a turn) then it's probably best to get a new one but he can't help me with the price. I'd rather get a TLD or Shoei which I get a great deal on both so if I crash it's not blowing out my bank account. I crash a lot btw.

Arai if it fits your head right , it the best helmet out there by a mile , might be a bit heavy , but nothing comes close to safety imo

Good luck.

A while ago you posted some complete bullshit you pulled out of your ass about Score having no insurance.
So I contacted Score and posted exactly what they said...but you never replied. Pull up the thread if you don't believe me.
What you said was completely un true!

About the helmets...its obvious you are in w TLD and talking up the helmet cause "there people you know and respect"
But that dosnt make the helmet a better product than a Shoei. Im talking truth here. I have 3 TLD's and have owned many Shoei's. I have also used Arai, HJC, Bell and others. When it comes to quality...there is no beating a Shoei. All 3 of my TLD's had little quality issues...from the pads not staying in place, the top vent falling loose, rubber liner cracking and coming loose and the place of manufacture.

As far as my experience racing in these helmets...well I have been racing my whole life. I raced the Baja 500 and 1000 in 2013 and will be doing the same in 2014. I have been racing w REM since the 90"s...I could go on about where and what I have done.

About my knowledge and experience w composites and quality in general. I am a composite guy myself. I have been at it for over 20 years. I am one of the best there is.
