fitness training improves fitness, which improves endurance and strength on the bike.

come on, bro... you're not this out of touch with how the human body functions are you? bro?

Bumping an old thread.

For stationary bike training, what is the recommendation? I read the part here about 45 minutes a day for 5 days...Can I lift after?

Not an answer to your question but I was always shocked after I rollerbladed that it was a much better work out than cycling for me. Rollerblading is no longer an option for me since the Hermosa Beach strand is no longer just a few minutes away.

Cycling is great but it lacks the swinging the arms that rollerblading provides......given the choice between bicycling and swimming (since rollerblading is not an option) I would pick swimming since it is a complete body work out.

What's your pool availability in you area?

I'm still in shock that the Racer X Virtual Trainer guy wrote that stretching doesn't increase athletic performance and if memory serves correct... he said there was no point in stretching. The guy knows a hell of a lot more about training than I ever will but I would like to see him try telling that to anyone that is over 50 and still riding.

160 is a monster?

Hmm...So I've been "back at it" and hitting the bike 15 minutes before lifting.

I am planning on upping it to 45 as this thread outlines....I am usually doing my 15 minutes on the bike at 150-165 for my HR...When I got to 45 minutes, I plan on a much longer ramp and taper time...

My road bike on a trainer riding is for triathlons. It's cold outside now (soon to change) but I ride 3 days a week on a trainer. Ranging from 1 hour up to 3 hours. Yes, 3 hours is extreme, but I need the saddle time for long distance rides when I can't get outside.
I did a fun 1hr 30 min set last week.
20 min warmup
5 minutes standing, 5 minutes seated easy gear. Repeat 5 times = 50 minutes
20 min cool down.

The standing will kick your ass.
Then I ran for 30 minutes afterwards, but that's a different story all together.

I was hitting the stationary bike in the gym for around 30 minutes a day a few months back. Pretty good resistance and carried pretty good pace. Then one day I decided to take the stairs back to my office. Needless to say, 6 flights of stairs almost killed me and was 1000x the work out and it saved me more than 25 minutes!!!
No more stationary bike for me. Weights, concept 2 rower and stairs. And of course the occasional moto Wink

I use a stationary bike for 30 minutes several times a week. It is really good for your knees and overall health. Personally I don't think it will do much for moto though unless you do it for a really long time. It is a great way to warm up and stay loose. Football players use them on the sidelines all the time.

Putting my road bike on a stand was the best thing for me, 24 miles in an hour and I get off wanting to puke. I use the Wahoo Fitness HR monitor and speed/cadence gear and their iPhone app to see my HR and speed, its a motivator to beat your best time every day. On a stand you cant coast.

When I do go out on the real road and ride its so easy now. I have a Concept 2 also, but Its too much for me to do it more than 3 times a week.

I get competitive and hook it up to the laptop and log my rowing times to see how I'm doing in my age class as compared with the rest of the world, some of those fuckers must be cheating I swear.

Did this yesterday for my first ever 45 minute spin.

My balls and piece were asleep by minute 30. I moved my seat a little, and got some feeling back. Afterward, I hit the weights and felt pretty good. Going to hit the bike again tomorrow, but definitely toning it down from the 45 to 30 or so.

Interestingly enough, I did what a few suggested in another thread, and have been drinking amino's after working out, and I really am not getting sore.

I'm 41 and I started doing high intensity elliptical in January after riding with a heart rate monitor for the first time and seeing that my heartrate is near max the entire time every moto (177-180). We had a very rainy spring so last weekend was my first ride since coming up with this program. I could tell I made it a lot longer into my motos before I looked down to check the time. Quicker recovery afterwards. That's after two months off the bike. My heartrate was still in the same zone during the motos. I won't know for sure until my next race exactly how it works out, but I can definitely say it seems promising.

I also run about twice a week, but on elliptical day I wear my heart rate monitor try to push at the same intensity and duration as my motos. 5 min warmup (HR 120s), then 15 minutes near max HR (high 170s), five slow, then another 15 high followed by cool down. It is brutal. Total calories burned is far almost more than what I would have gotten by training in an 80 percent heartrate zone for twice the time, not to mention conditioning to the longer duration and lower heartrate isn't correlating to what I'm trying to do (ride 15 minute motos).

I really wish I had put these pieces together years ago. But back to your original question, I think the means of exercise isn't that important so long as you can get the needed intensity. I tried a rower but there was no way I could hold out for the duration I needed. I like elliptical better than stationary because it also works arms and hands... also like motocross.

30 min + 2 With an RPM maintaing 100, and a HR ATLEAST 160, is tougher than you think. (I'm a cyclist) And if you can do better, more power to you. (you're in GREAT shape) I average about 100 miles a week..

Wait wait wait, you've got me all wrong!

I am not in great shape, not by any stretch!

I averaged 85 for RPM, and did 45 minutes at 160-171. I am NOT a cyclist...if I tried to maintain 100, my HR would SKY ROCKET.

That said, I plan to do the 45 minutes again tomorrow. No way I could hold 100 for RPM though.

out of curiosity, are you using a HR monitor or those sensors on the bars? I'm on a monitor.

Jeffro, I use the Lemond spin bike 3-4 times a week, 35 minutes at a time before doing weights. I try to run around 85-90 rpm cadence, and do 10 minutes of sprints. It has helped my riding immensely.

Of course you have to push to make it worth your time. Last night I was on the bike, and there was a guy next to me that was just tooling along. We rode the same amount of time and when he finished, he wasn't even sweating. I guess what I'm getting at is you get out what you put in.

Thanks for the reply Aaron and the rest of you guys. Looks like Socket dug this old thread out of the storage locker.

I still use my spin bike at least a couple times week and like it. Been trying to keep up with a schedule , but it's been tough with my work schedule.

BTW....Sharkey and Aaron.....rode my new KXF last weekend for the first ride.....and love the thing. I have some setup stuff I need / want to do to it , but I think I'll be having a lot of fun on that bike this summer. The thing pulls like a tractor compared to my old 08' Honda!

I stacked up 2 laundry baskets in front of my bike, then put my laptop on that and fire up Netflix. Problem is my workouts aren't near as intense. So I'll search youtube for bike trainer workouts and find a good gopro vid from Italy, France, some cool location and watch that, volume off. Then in new IE tab crank Pandora. That makes an hour ride not too bad.

If your dick falls asleep (not you, from the other post) then your bike isn't fit properly. Bike shorts with ass pad also helps.

I turn 52 next month, and train by mountain biking up and down hills as intense as I can go without stopping, then lift weights.
This works. 3 years ago (at 49) I was doing 50 minute sessions at Pala all out on a 125.
I personally can't do a treadmill, or stationary bike. I just can't do it. I'd rather run in the pouring rain.

Jeffro! Good to hear. I'm about set up now, and have mine working very well. I'm looking forward to racing up at Spokane on Memorial Day for WOTMX.

tabata interval training once or twice a week is the most effective thing you can do on a stationary cycle. Only take you 15 mins too!

Curious if any of you do any base training (6 or 8 weeks) before you start matching moto intensity/duration, and or spinning, rowing etc 'till you puke...

Depending what your after

20-30mins averaging 1:45-2min/500m splits depending on fitness

5k challenge
10km challenge
or 500m/1min rest- these are done at 100% and destroy you pretty quick

have a google, there are heaps of workouts, racerx trainer has a few as well

I asked my wife about this (she is a clinical exercise physiologist) and she said doing "motos" on a stationary bike is not very effective. When you go hard you do not want to decrease your output by fatiguing. Interval training works best. 5 to 15 minute sprints then rest and do it again for about an hour total. It all has to do with the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise.
