I disagree, you have got to lose before you can win and you got to pay your dues, winning should be hard and the best way to get faster is by racing faster riders.

If people are deterred and wont get involved with racing because of what they perceive as sandbagging that is their own problem and racing is probably not for them anyway. Like I said I am in the minority on this subject and I believe racing should be done on the track and not with the officials.
Okay. I definitely agree with exactly what your saying. But I wasn't looking at this and thinking about the people that bitch someone in there class is a sandbagger, I'm talking about the more help the guys winning in B are getting than the guys winning in A at a national level.

Since I posted the topic I was reading everything as if it was directed toward me. My bad!

Cooper raced A class for like a half a year, he hit so many A races before he turned pro. I remember watching all the vids from all over and seeing him race am day at unadilla in 2012

Not the time spend that most did in that class but he def. got alot of races in

Cooper raced LL in 250B in 2012 and left with a 1st and a 2nd. Moved to A for Mini O's and won almost everything. Went to the James Stewart Spring Championship in the A classes and won almost everything, announcing there that is would be his last amatuer race. So, he had 6 months (mostly off-season) as an amatuer A rider. My point was that there is not much 'transitioning' required.
Grizz wrote:

Don't mean to argue with you, but he has been on a bike for 15 years and you are trying to convince me that he "built" pro speed from amatuer intermediate speed in 6 months? Come on, let's be serious.

It all has to do with the classes the teams focus on, a few 85 and supermini classes/ 250B Stock/Mod. 250A Open AProsport. And a lot of the times the teams know who the guys to beat are and who the big names are. If your winning a class and the big names aren't in the class believe me they notice, and then they see in the class whoever that person that won the "easier"
Class was they see their results in the class with the names of riders that are well known and they don't even think twice about the person because when they were with this guy, or those 3 guys, or so and so, they didn't stand up like they did in the class they excelled in.

Sandbagging is nothing new. It has been going on for years. It does seem odd though, that a rider can come out of the B class at LLs and race a National a few weeks later and run top 5.

Lie you Manny, I did an early LL race, 1984 for me. Open B. I got waxed real good. I think by the end of the first moto all the numbers were rubbed off my bike form all the ramming. I am still not sure if I had fun or not. But I still have my bib.

That is funny- AC didn't need time to 'build' speed from supermini to pro didn't take nearly as long as the usual schoolboy- B progression.

So, W T F is your problem with Martin?

Let you in on a little clue: it's a Regional National Championship
Yea I know how it works, I just think it's lame that he's been racing the "small bike" for over 10 years. To me it's a rule that should change. I think if your over 25 you shouldn't be allowed to race the lites class. That's 9 years of eligible seasons on the lites bike if you turned pro at 16, 7 if you were 18. Isn't the lites class supposed to be for the up and coming pro riders in the sport?

It was more constructive than your reply. And all this talk about B riders being faster than A riders at the nats is because most A riders DGAF about the nats unless they are still relatively young and hoping to go pro or find a ride. There is fast A riders all over this country that will run with the top B kids except for the elite few that are definitely going places.

You bring up a very valid topic and for sure not directing at you when it comes to "sandbagging" and I have seen that the people who complain the most are mini parents and then guys who quit racing in their late teens or early 20s when they were a novice and then start racing again when over 30 and they cant win then either but want everyone else with more race experience to be kicked out of their class. LLs is the worst because you have guys who's dream is to go to LLs but the sad truth is they just are not good enough even as a C rider. The guys getting help in the B class are there because of the rules but its no different than college football as some of them will be a top pro right from the start.

What you just said is exhibit A: the type of thinking that leads to this happening.

I can't believe you said, "There is fast A riders all over this country that will run with the top B kids..."

No shit they can run with them... they should be faster! They are in the next class up!

No shit indeed. I'm talking about your average fast local A guy vs B kids with 3rd mortgage type shit going on. This is the sandbagging thread, isn't it? Nice try. Thanks for clarifying that A and B thing also. I wondered why everyone was faster when I dropped down to A.

I'd be curious to know how many people posting in theads like this who are bagging on the riders have ever raced national level amateur races. Some of you seem to have no idea what it's like when you bring the best from every corner of the country together.

Let's take a 15 year old KID who just moved up from 85's........he has tons of raw speed, but maybe not the size and experience to ride a 250F. (40 hp and 225 lbs) Maybe the kid weighs 125 lbs. ( I think he should at least be entitled a year in B class.

I know I know, Ron Lechien won a 250 SX at 16.......jesus. .......and for you assholes who bag on Davalos Alessi or whoever else, you probably sandbag your own life everyday. Putting stuff off, not having any goals, and letting life pass you by. It's real easy to say, "just bust your ass and get better."

When was the last time most of you ran 5 miles? Seriously. Internet tough guys are the best.

My response to the riders staying in the lites class......

It doesn't bother me at all. It's a " Pro class ! ". Some guys stay in the class because they aren't big enough or strong enough to ride a 450 at race speed. It's entirely different ball game on the 450's ( look at Dean Wilson this past weekend ). And he's one of the bigger kids out there. Little dudes like Baggett , MD31 , Blake wharton , ect......they may very well be LIFE TIME lites riders.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with that. So what if it doesn't seem fair for the new up and coming kids that are turning pro........PRO is PRO no matter what class you race. Those guys I mentioned may very well just stop racing all together if they can't ride a 450.

If you're big enough or strong enough to hold on to a 450 for a full race....then great. But if you're a smaller dude in stature ......why should you have to quit your job , your way of making money ?

To the new kids stepping up to the pro class......come in swinging and bring it! It's the pro class.....there is no easy road here. And there is NO SAND BAGGING in the pro classes!

I completely agree with this.
Plus, how do you sandbag a pro class? Is there an extra pro pro class?

We have raced plenty of am nationals in just about every class, so I am well aware of 'what it is like'. A 15 year old kid moving up from 85's to schoolboy where he has 2 seasons left to race, then presumably to B giving him 3 full seasons on big bikes before making the move up. No one is saying he should not be 'entitled to a year in B class'. This whole thread started about a guy who is in his FOURTH year in the B class, remember? Totally different situations than the one you describe..

He was in the Pro class within two years, winning 125 SX races within three. But when he showed up in 1987, he was truly a Novice-level C-class rider…. with game-changing potential.

We do our best to keep sand-baggers out of every class, and we have done it since 1982. The internet and the new national advancement system in place by the AMA makes it much harder to hide out in a lower class.

And the rider implied as a sandbagger in the original post here is not a sand-bagger, and neither was Jeremy McGrath, according to the rules they raced under.

Yeah I can see I did it all wrong .
We lived in the bush about 2600 klms north of Perth, and no riders ever got graded locally but MWA did grade riders at the State titles.
Manjimup is a pretty big race meet over here and we got asked to race, but $$ etc and the biggest thing was we were never going to travel 3k to race and 3 k back only racing in our classes which are given to you when you join MA as the lowest.

So they said it was alright as you can race up but not step back. So we packed up and drove, found out we needed different coloured backgrounds etc, so grabbed a few cans of paint and made coplete mess of our old bikes. Our D class rider won the A &B at his first go and other lad was winning his races till he did a rubber neck and fell still got 3rd overall.

Went to Nats that year and then to KTM Cup on Gold Coast another 5k we raced up again and the lady said but we have trophies, we wanted to race the best and that was Tye on the 85 and Mr Bloomfield on the 65

That night drove up to Brisbane and watched Super X and left and arrived at Coolum Beach track at 2am. Raced there that day and had Sick Mick Cook sign the truck good days racing But poor Jacob was sufferring from travel etc and bike issues etc. Most club members thanked us for calling in and racing and they were wrapt someone could beat Jacob who had never been beaten on his own track. It was our first visit to the track. Made the 5/6k drive home easier.

I always felt riders get better racing better class riders and turn into sooks if it is only win win attitude, but each to their own.
My biggest bitch is when Daddy or Uncle drops the gates and little freddie gets his special gate pick each time. And way too many gutless Officials and Greedy fukin Promoters, money 1st Racers last.

You either have to sandbag or never go to Loretta's. Those are the 2 choices. It's only going to get worse.

If you mean riding Collegeboy classes to avoid advancement points as 'according to the rules' then I guess you are right. However, 4 years in the B classes when you have top 5 LL speed the previous years is trophy hunting IMO. Just seems a little funny that his parents own a track that he doesn't ever race on in a points paying class...

It is a dirty system that should be revamped. When tracks like Red Bud race outside of the AMA and do not report advancement points as well as rumors of other track owners not reporting results for "national amatures", something needs to been done.

I would start with;

1.You can not get a pro license until after you race a full season in an AMA/FIM A Class
2. Eliminate C Class championships. You should have been in B Class at least.
3. If you place in Top 5 at National Event , LL, Mini O's, etc you are advanced. (Minis not included)
4. Race any Money Moto you must be an A rider
5. Two Seasons in a Big Bike C Class and you are advanced
6. If you are caught pulling off or DNFing just so you do not get advanced, you get advanced.

The Cozzadd case was an unfortunate disagreement between MX Sports and the AMA several years ago, and it helped us both to learn how to manage "B/C" classes and close loopholes. Everyone moved on.

As for squid-mom's complaint that whoever this kid is has "top five LL speed" but doesn't actually have a top-five LL finish in the B class, I am not sure what MX Sports or the AMA can do so long as he is rated "B" in his district and does not have the advancement points.

Everyone has an idea or opinion of how it can be done, but it's not always easy -- especially when different areas and different events have their own class structure, advancement, etc. The AMA is trying to get a grasp on it, but there's only so much that you can do when a kid only races a few times a year in recognized races and doesn't have the points or finishes...

Our at the moment internet tough guy was actually really fast I guess. I was looking at the old sandbagging thread and thought this was funny.
Quote from someone:
"The ex pro riders are shinning in that class as well. J. Blain & D. Brewer and both ex pros in the B/C class. What a crock!

It comes down to character and self respect. "
Good stuff right there.

If promoters take lap times in consideration instead of any other factor then it would clear the air such as if you run the same lap times in C as the A class then you got to move up.

Then your complaint is with the rider, his district and his sponsor(s). By ALL the rules...he's legal...however, you see a problem? GO FIX IT.

Period.

Quote from someone:
"The ex pro riders are shinning in that class as well. J. Blain & D. Brewer and both ex pros in the B/C class. What a crock!

It comes down to character and self respect. "
Good stuff right there.
I hadn't touched a motorcycle in 10+ years and I wasn't arrogant enough to come back and think I could run A class speed. I was told by the AMA that because I never reached "Pro-Expert" status in AMA Pro Racing, that I could return to the B class. And they reccomended it.

So smart guy, ever heard of Keith Turpin??? Well if not, he was the 1986 Supercross East Champion, 1987 Supercross East runner up and former factory rider for Honda and Suzuki and he got the same Re-classification as I did. As a matter of fact, he told me to get the re-classification.

Thanks for the label of internet tough guy as well!

JBlain619, Vet Classes are tough because a 45 yr old guy is nothing like when he was a fast A Class 17 year old. And guys like RC #4 show up at LL and take a trophy from a guy that never raced Pro, that sucks. Personally I would be honored to be on the track with some of my heros from back in the day, but any former Pro should not be at an Amature national

That's BS. In the plus class everyone is the same age. Just because one guy who was a pro stopped riding, doesnt mean he should be able to drop back down. He is still the same age as the guys he used to race with and beat when he was skilled enough to earn his pro license or move up to the A class. The guys riding 30 B/C, NEVER were fast enough to earn either their A or Pro cards, plain and simple.(except for the ones that the AMA/MxSports let slip by)

I will never understand the ex Pro and A guys complaining about RC, Emig, Reynard or any factory guy coming back and racing the Vet classes but yet have no issue with dropping themselves down to B. Am I the only guy that see's the unbelievable irony in this?
