RC may not have changed riding styles, but he revolutionized how racers train, both mentally and physically. Ricky, for better or worse, completely demolished the communal & casual MX lifestyle that ruled the 90's and brought back the steely-eyed rigidity of earlier generations. Once the wins and titles started accumulating, everyone rushed to emulate the Carmichael plan.

Whips, scrubs, and style can be effective. However, they cannot replace physical fitness and stamina. Ricky simply beat his opponents into submission.

This is true. I don't think they had personal trainers either, and you can throw Jeff Ward into that group.

Yep. I think Hannah trained mainly by doing motos but he was in great shape. And really those guys learned fitness from the GP riders of the 70s. They were all in top condition too. 45min motos.

Halarious, Bubba hasn't done SQUIDDLY SQWAT since 2009 and now he wins 2 races in a row and he's suddenly the Fastest guy on the Planet again. When Bubba wins another Championship, then come talkin to us about comparing him to Ricky Carmichael or Ryan Villopoto. Ewee! this Raining Yellow stuff has gotta stop

"No one" wanted it as bad as he did.. not many people in this world are willing to do what it takes to be the best. Just like RC said himself.. "they say they want it... but they don't really want it"

I'm really shocked to read this seeing as RJ can't stand JS.
He must believe it to be true.
I think nobody before JS was this amazing.
I was a big fan of RJ, till he co-signed on the "anti-Stewart" SX.com.

Is this the same JS that RC use to demolish?
RC had speed on JS for days in the nationals, but in SX nope. JS was visibly faster than RC from the start in 2005. RC used to say the only way to beat him indoors was to hope for a mistake or try and pressure him into one. You could not beat him with speed from 2005 through 2011.

One lap balls out, I agree. The difference (as you pointed out) was that early on RC had the fitness to go balls out for 30+2 and James didn't. Fitness is less of a factor indoors therefore, I think indoors was a better test of who had more raw speed.

James is immensely talented, but this ain't 2008. There are a bunch of riders that can and will do just as many things as James does. Remember, JB10 was the first one to hit that triple after the finish line last weekend, not James. A few weeks back, I think Wil Hahn was the first to hit a quad, not JS7. But your JS7 fandom is duly noted. James is truly a great rider, but he's not the GOAT.

James had to race a 2 stroke against RC in the beginning, then when he got a 4, RC had more experience racing one.. RC himself said anybody racing a 2 stroke against a 4 was a fool, plus I have seen RC hurt himself racing James outdoors and vice- versa...

Stewart was an unbelievable 125cc rider. Supercross he had RC covered. RC owned the outdoors and just had the ability to go slightly faster than Stewart on a 450f mx track.

This really does seem like 2005 all over again. 72 SX wins is a long way away. There is always next year Len.

@Big Lenny - Aldon got a little too close and told James he'd never kissed a man before?

@Outsider - "Not doing the work" isn't why JS isn't the champion he could've been, so what difference does it make? Ryan doesn't seem to enjoy his job anymore and James does. That's worth something.
