Our sport is caught in the middle of "is it a sport?" or "is it a show?". I feel that our sport is being marketed as a show. Baseball, Football, Nascar all market themselves as sports and don't need all the chicks, fire, screaming and such. Yes I know some professional sports have trophy girls or cheer leaders but they aren't on the screen for 25% of the TV broadcast like in SX. I think the issue is, our sport isn't big enough to stand on its own as purely a sports event. The sad truth is we have to market ourselves to the flat bill, monster tattoo crowd to fill the seats. Just like wrestling or monster trucks. It isn't fair to the riders, teams or sponsors though, those guys (or most of them) handle themselves like true professionals and don't need some skanky monster girl to highlight their rider or team.

JMHO
A problem with our sport, Is the downtime in between races at night. The live TV was AWESOME to me, because I am already a fan and have the passion, but people I watched it with that don;t ride, started to lose interest....

Even when adding the Semi's. Nascar racing is 3-4 hours of constant racing. A baseball game? Football? Nothing starts and stops like our sport.

There needs to be a show, or something when the racing is stopped.

I follow Twitch on Instagram (sometimes he has some funny stuff) and I was surprised how well his interview went as well. I was expecting no cursing, but some stupid attitude and he composed himself really well. Maybe he is two steps behind Deegan and the whole attitude that dumbs his intelligence is just part of the show and he is slowly moving on.

I contemplated going to see Nuclear Cowboyz once but price turned me off. I just took my family to see Monster Jam (my kids are that young) and we got good seats for all of us for the price of one ticket to Nuclear Cowboyz. If I were single I would consider going, but not dragging the whole family for $80 a seat. And honestly, with Monster Jam you still get freestyle MX, ATV racing, monster trucks, enough to keep young kids engaged. I know it is a different niche, it is definitely a better show for young kids. Sorry, rambling.
Took my kids to Monster Jam for years and now we take our grandson to the monster jam every year. He like to ride his dirt bike but he really likes to go see the Monster Trucks. We are going to the Georgia Dome this weekend to the annual event. We always have a great time when we go also.

Deegan and Twitch are two of the smartest riders (in terms of marketing) you will ever meet. Don't be filed by the tough guy attitude you "think" they have.

Nuclear cowboys was way more interesting to my two boys than Monster trucks or Supercross. When they get older, it may change but the show is pretty dang good and they can charge $80 a ticket because people will pay it.

I don't think that its unprofessional SX marketing, if anything it's genius marketing. Throughout the SX season myself and some of the family friends will have little SX parties where we BBQ and watch the races. The wives and some of the kids get pretty bored about halfway through the races and stop paying attention. When the Nuclear Cowboyz commerical comes on just about all the wives and definitely all the kids really pay attention to it and they all say they want to go when the tour gets to our area. They will say that an event like that looks like its more entertaining to watch.

Yeah, I agree, it's not "unprofessional". Hell, professional people in the marketing business were probably paid a lot to come up with that dog and pony show.

It's klassy with a capital K.

Yeah, been to quite a few back when I lived in Cali. Last one I went to was a couple years ago in Salt Lake.

Does the market define the marketing or the other way around? Seriously, does a few flame throwers make such a big difference in who will show and who won't? If the guy isn't yelling at us with his thunderous voice, would people walk out? Seemed to me there've been quite a few at our National (Thunder Valley), all without that stuff. And, those fans have to deal with the dirt, the hills, the heat, etc.... That alone drops the numbers, but a decent amount show.

Question is would attendance really drop for SX if they lost the flame throwers/thunderous voice stuff? Or what I'm hearing here is that Feld just trying to market their circus side shows?
Yes, I really do think there is a very large segment of the crowd that watches the lazer lights with amazement, scream a "hell yeah" at the top of their lungs when the voice of God asks if they're ready for supercross, ogle creepily over the Monster girls, look on with wonder as a canon controlled by a chick wearing tight leather pants magically shoots t-shirts into the crowd, and throw their hands up in excitement as that guy on the green bike crosses the finish line. Not because their rider won the race, mind you, but rather because two huge fuggin balls of flame shot up in the air. The only rider names they know are the ones that were introduced during the kick ass lazer beam, smoke and voice of God drenched opening ceremonies. Those people go home, crack another PBR (not that there's anything wrong with that) and talk about what a kickass time they had and how they can't wait for next year.

If there was just racing and no show, those types wouldn't come back next year. Their marketing doesn't work on me, in fact it makes me roll my eyes and I don't bring my family to the races. But, I'll be back year after year with my friends to watch the racing and they know that.

Oh I completely agree. They are marketing genius. Who would have thought 18 years ago (about) that Deegan would not only be one really wealthy dude, spread among several industries, one hell of a great dad and husband, running an empire and giving dudes who like to jump great careers? Right from the start he hired the right people and the best band of characters. Twitch was one of his best... He is still carrying a lot of it. I do think he is at an age to pass that baton, he will be hard to replace though.

I am to cheap to spend $80 a seat for a freestyle show. I know others will pay it, it will sell out, just not my bag of tea for the $.

It's kinda to bad that in Merica the bar is lowered so much of the time. Rather than educate people so that they have an actual interest in the sport/event, they lure them in with promises of death defying danger and and flashing light/bells and whistles. The Olympics are a sad example.

Worked for P T Barnumn though, This way to THE GREAT EGRESS!!!!!!!!

The most popular sports will always be those that a fat dad can do in his back yard with their kids. [not that there is anything wrong with a fat dad mind you.] Most people are watchers not doers in any event.

Clearly the mocking sarcasm on the FMOTP in my avatar goes way over your head.

I apologize for adding to the current level of cognitive dissonance you're experiencing "bro".

Did you listen to how how NYK had to explain to his kids why some guy was beating a chick in the show?

And no....it's not the same crowd.

I go to the occasional sx. I'd never go to any freestyle shit with all the white trash there.

Twitch better save his money because when this shit Peters out all that's left is packing shipping boxes for Travis Barker. Same with Hansen.

That said....they should have some respectable looking guys doing tricks and whips between races and during intermission.

Deegan and Twitch aren't marketing geniuses. Deegan was smart enough to realize that 909 bro will default on their credit cards to buy more bro clothes like 50 dollar t shirts.
Same with Travis Barker.
He didn't realize at the time America was turning into a low rent country that would go broke to be bro.

The people with real wealth cut Deegan his checks.

Didn't hear the Op complaining when Nuclear Cowboys were handing out $1000 cheques for the lites hole-shot awards.
It's called cross promotion using several similar brand platforms.

Wow imagine if Camel or Skoal Bandit came back into SX?,at least you "higher than mightee types" would have something legit to complain about!

I don't really get where all the hate is coming from. Is it wrong that I go to the races and enjoy opening ceremonies, the lazer lights, and the fire? Sorry, but I have been going to supercross for ten years and it still fires me up to watch the races. Same thing goes for freestyle. Although I have never been, I think the Nuclear Cowboys show looks pretty cool, because I love dirtbikes and enjoy watching talented people ride them. What the heck is the difference between having the skills to win races, and the skills to do a backflip over a 75 foot gap? Both take incredible ability and years of practice and dedication, so why is there so much hate on these guys? Tell me how big of an idiot I am and how I must not be a true fan all you want, but I just enjoy riding and watching others who are way better than me ride just like 90% of people here.

Im not a freestyle fan , once you've seen it , you've seen it.... not to say isnt spectacular, or bloody hard ... but it just isnt racing.

The Nitro Circus & Nuclear Cowboys thing will go on , but i'd much rather watch Brett Cue busting whips outdoors , than sit it some auditorium .

Good on all the freestyle folks for making money riding dirt bikes...Freestyle is not my cup of tea...and in my opinion, professional racing can't distance itself far enough from the freestyle scene. Sure, the cross promotion between freestyle and supercross, probably helps the sport of supercross, but I couldn't care less about that. I'd rather have a smaller, more professional, serious, sport full of hard working ATHLETES, with people that appreciate the sport as a sport in the stands (even if it means the stands are half full) over a larger, less professional, with stands full of bro's that don't appreciate the ATHLETES on the track. That's easy for me to say, though, because I have no vested interest in the sport (I'm not trying to make a living off it), so whether the stands are sold out, or half full, it makes no difference to me.

I wish Feld would promote supercross as a sport rather than as a show...if they did that, sure, maybe some of the bro's would stop buying tickets, but I'm fairly confident that it would attract more hard core racing fans of other genres (road racing, F1, Etc.) which would hopefully fill some of the void left by the "I wanna see some wrecks" fans who don't appreciate the athleticism and skill displayed in our sport...but the sport would be better off in the long fun.

But, what is "real" growth of the sport? Is that attracting fans that just buy a ticket or two once a year and come for the wrecks...or is it attracting fans that will see the show appreciate the athleticism and the racing, and then go buy a bike for themselves and their kid (and all the aftermarket parts and gear and race entry fees that go with it)??? Personally, I'd rather have 1 person that appreciates the sport as a sport, than 10 bro's that buy a ticket to watch a wreck.

It seems moto and supercross put a lot of time and money into "growth" only to turn right around associate themselves with monster trucks...Why do they want growth by appealing to the lowest common denominator of fans? Why don't they think they can grow by appealing to folks that come for the racing (rather than the wrecks)???

I have always believed that MX/SX is trying be like NASCAR, when they should be looking toward motogp or F1. Sell the series on the athletes and machines, not the crashes.

Think about it, NASCAR is the farthest thing from supercross and the racing is totally different,. ironicly the most professional looking race is held at a NASCAR Circut.

Wasn't it on the live show that they interviewed Dave Prater and he said they've had a steady increase of ticket sales year on year even through the tough economic times? They're obviously doing something right.
1/8/2014 1:00pm
A friend of a friend went to A1 and I could see his Facebook posts about it. He kept making hillbilly jokes as though he had to justify why he was watching SX in the first place. It just really hit home how people who don't ride view the sport and definitely associate it with other stereotypical redneck events.

If I hadn't started riding dirt bikes as a kid and got obsessed with them before I ever saw a SX event I would have been immediately turned off by the way it's promoted with the monster truck announcer voices and trashy hookers. I mean, the girls themselves are fine but can we at least dress them as $20 hookers instead of $5 hookers? For example, compare the Honda girls at last years Daytona SX with the Monster girls ... one is family friendly but nice to look at and add a bit of glamour the other is raunchy and only turns on creepy old guys who haven't discovered the wonders of the internet.

Honestly, if I had a daughter I would probably stop watching SX because it's current promotion basically sends the message that guys are the heroes and girls are only useful for looking pretty and the best way to look pretty is by wearing as little clothing as possible while acting flirty. It's just sad.

Was watching the race again (I do that all week long until the next race....pisses the entire household off....lol), and I re-started it at the part where they're interviewing that Nitro Circus guy (Stenberg? Fuck, I don't know...don't really care). That got me thinking that the whole loud-mouthed announcers/fireworks/screaming horseshit really "dumbs down" the sport. Does that marketing garbage really attract a bigger crowd than if it was more straightforward, professional racing? It should be obvious Nitro Circus/FMX and SX are two truly different things (I do have to admit it was funny how the racing greats in the booth were both quizzically saying to each other they never went to one of those goofy shows), but the marketing approach between the two seems to be the same, and I have to wonder why.

SX/MX is one of the top physically/mentally demanding sports on the planet (and often by far). This isn't some monster-truck/Nascar-beer-swizzling-sit-on-your-fat-ass garbage. It's arguably much more demanding in all aspects than many of the most popular sports. Do they truly have to make it look like the racers have to be part of the flashbulb crowd (yanno, the attention whore kinda thing) to sell it?
Dang good post, I think they need to lose the fire, it's almost like they are scared the sport can't stand on it's own. What other form of serious racing is presented like a Monster truck show?

The worst thing about attending the race is Lurch's crazy nutso screaming. Everyone in the stands plugged their ears every time he opened his mouth.
