I think James can be the one to pressure Ryan the way Poto pressures other riders. It's ballsy gnarly passes that get in the heads of other riders. Passes that just kick one's confidence in the gut.Where the other guy feels insanely confident. I bet half the other riders are defeated as soon as they line up in their minds. You have to believe you are that good and you can go faster than the rider In front of you and then execute. Crazy sport for sure.

The best these guys can do to win a title is to wait around long enough until RV hangs em up. I think at this point it's too late for Reed and Stewy as they are just as close to retiring as RV is. Dungey will probably hang on for 3-4 years after RV hangs em up, but by then Kenny, Barcia, and Eli will be beating him on a regular basis. I cannot stand RV and I want to punch the TV every time he wins, but at this point in time there isn't anyone that's going to "beat him" for a title. It's just like back in the day when Honda brought on Kdub, Pichon, Tortelli, and Lusk to unseat MC. Lots of hopes and dreams and talk of a good season, but by round 6 it was the same old runaway.

What Dungey actually said was, “I think how I beat him is just focusing on myself, doing my own deal and letting the rest play out. There is only so much I can control."

That's not the same as ignoring Villopoto and it's nowhere near the childish "I can't seem to beat the fucker....so I'll ignore him." Dungey is very aware of how fast RV is, just as Villopoto knows how fast Dungey is. Both riders are naturally going to focus on their own program.

To give the mindless masses something to think about for once in their lives. Dungey did not say he was ignoring Villopoto, but that didn't stop some from clinging on to that strawman and running with it with ridiculous statements.

My favorite was the bloke who thought it would be funny if RV and Dungey were on each side of the middle gate and RV would bang his hand on the side (as if Dungey would suddenly become some startled and afraid and aware of RV).

Really? Like RV, Dungey puts his heart and soul into being the best rider he can be and you have some internet wonderbro saying the stupidest most mindless crap one can come up with.

Jeez, lighten up kid!

We're commenting on the article in the original post... not something Dungey said.

A couple more weeks and maybe we'll have something real to talk about.

I think you definitely have to be strong mentally and just focas on yourself and ride your own race. Also his training program is ridiculous, he puts in so much effort to be where he is at physically and i think he has to be one of the most fit athletes on the track.

Perhaps sticking a golf club into his front wheel at speed might slow him down a scootch. If that doesn't work, look at how well the right wrist works. And elephant balls, that would help too.

Rebus please, understand that not everything is said literally here. I honestly think the key to beating RV is matching his corner speed. We all saw how close the top riders were in the straight rhythm, which proves how important corner speed is. It seems like he can carry more speed through the middle of the turns, so if anyone can up their game in that area I think it could give them a chance. I think mentally being prepared is also very important, but it's also the hardest thing to control. Whoever takes it to RV will have to show damn near perfection in order to make it happen, and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Gonna have to mess with his confidence for sure. The only thing is that Villo doesn't have delicate confidence unlike a lot of his competitors. Someone like Ken Roczen can easily step in and stir the pot this year. I saw Roczen almost win Seattle supercross in 2012 on his 350. Then this year watching him in person fend off and completely deflate Baggett's efforts at Hangtown. It's going to take someone that has that type of mind set to ride with and beat villo.

Honestly though as far as straight up sprint-and-get-ahead speed goes. The only person I think has the chance to gap him is Bubba. Although everyone knows Reed, Barcia, Canard, Millsaps, and a couple others for sure have the potential on any given day. What I've seen from Villo at the past MEC races kind of shows his weakness' to a t.

The people who say Villo can't handle the pressure, are you f#%ing serious? Did you not see the SX race where he clinched the title? Villo,Millsaps and Dungey going at it balls out the WHOLE main, and from what was it lap 2 Villo leading. Even in the podium interviews after everyone of them said that they were going absolutely all out, there was nothing left. Not to mention winning the title after being what, one race worth of points down at the beginning?
Yea 3 titles in three years and each of them by pretty much dominating,no pressure anywhere along the way there!!

bro do you even watch MEC??? Tongue Tongue Smile

Obviously he can handle pressure. Just not every time. Sometimes, he loses focus and crashes.

JS @ the cup - RV forgets joker lane, then crashes

Dungey at Millville - RV gets passed straight up and immediately crashes.

Venue? - RV doesn't make the cut in the heat. He then blew the start in the lcq and flew off the track. Re-enters the track by trying to wheelie a tough block and crashes. Had room to ride around the block. Doesn't qualify.

In fact, Villo crashes enough to where his own mistakes seem to be his biggest competition.

Pressure him.

That lcq tuff block deal was in Jacksonville I think. that was a tight right handed start that created a lot of havoc iirc

Yup I guess that's right, one incident from a no matter race one incident from the nationals and one from a SX a couple seasons ago. 3 incidents in 45 races or so, I still like Villos odds! Sideways

Just the ones I can remember off hand.

Plus, I thought you meant RV's crashes from the Monster Cup in 2012, making it two years of effing up at the cup. I know he can buckle, we all do. Admit it.

How about RD's rookie year where RV passes him, gets pressured until late in the race, and crashes breaking his leg?

Do you have any better ideas or is Villo just unbeatable?

No disrespect to RV, he's today's King. Right MC and Everts? Lol

I don't remember that StL race quite like that RV pretty much took out Dungey so there was no immediate pressure. That crash was brutal. Not making excuses but that jump section was fucked up bad and it bit more than one rider. HotSauce ended up in the hospital with bad injuries from that one also.
Yes it is racing and anything can happen but RV just seems to get stronger and stronger.

My idea?... A time machine,a needle with 1/4 Windham, 1/4 RC, 1/4 Villo and 1/4 Everts DNA and we might have something LOL!
12/26/2013 10:31pm
Dungey actually caught back up to him.

RD was within 0.5 seconds of RV when he crashed. While RV was hitting the ground, RD was in the air and about to clear the same jump.

Ralf says it best, "RD didn't have to worry about it. RV took himself out."

Corner speed and pressure. I'm interested in sports psychology because these dudes are all super mental, the sport is so mental where confidence has to be sky high.

How can JS beat RV?

Employ a mature innovative / entrepreneurial attitude.

RV has the best program ever assembled, and the motivation to drive it.

If I was james, I would market research the SHIT out of RV's program.

I would pull in all my existing contacts and collate the info they know about RV's program.

I would then assemble a team around me to counter every strength of RV's.

I would employ new practice track building techniques that replicate KEY parts of the indoor and outdoor tracks.

I would get a team to analyse every past race of RV;s and work out what lines he is prone to taking and work out how he builds his speed.

I would employ RV's past trainer (Randy Lawrence) and work out the foundations of RV's program..

Thats just a start. RV is Human. He can be beaten. But currently he is the most motivated / prepared

Lets face it, most pro riders are not on the same preparation / race craft level as RV / RC.. They are just stoked to have a ride and not have their Dad hassling them anymore, they turn up at the practice track & do their thing... and they eat right.. surely there is nothing more to it?
