Billings has stock classes, just on the old, easier hill that they used since 1910 or whenever. Fun to ride but you have to enter several months in advance and it's about $70/class for 2 tries(at the Great American event).

i have raced moto for over 15 years and the two professional hill-climb events i did were incredibly tough.
i didn't place in the Big Nasty in '08 but i placed 15th in the Exhibition class at the '10 Widowmaker on a GSXR 1000
those hills are fuckin' crazy
(ps... i rode borrowed bikes at both events, the one pictured is my Widowmaker ride)
While the second video looked pretty cool, neither of these are what hill climbing was supposed to be in my mind. What ever happened to a hill that no one could get up. The goal was to see who could get the farthest, not who could get there quickest. This is just up hill drag racing, with jumps sometimes.

you may be a little mistaken... there are different types of hills and different styles of races.
there are more track style hills and more climb if you can hills.
for instance, Widowmaker 2013 (skip to 1:30 for the climb)

i thought they'd want more torque than top end hp but what do i know.
coworker went out to a hillclimb recently in PA, 2 weeks ago?
said he saw 4 riders make it to the top in the 6 hours he watched.

when i asked him why he didn't go to unadilla, he told me that mx was like nascar- if you've seen them go around the track once, it's the same every time. These hillclimbs they're crashing and getting thrown!
Doesn't a stock 450 (or even 250) have enough power to pull itself up the Empire State building given the traction? Why do they put half ton street bike motors in?
I can see where the wheelbase mods come in but isn't traction, light weight and rider skill more important than horsepower?
The widowmaker courselookss particularly rough and rocky. Wouldn't a trials bike be better than a 125 horsepower 200 kilo lump of pig iron?
And watching those guys do goon-riding loop outs do they not know about clutch and throttle control (never mind jumping skills)?

No they have crappy gear on. A spode (like me) would have a super clean bike full of stickers, super new clean gear, and then ride worse then those guys. again, like me.
Excuse my ignorance, and no offence meant.....

Sorry.....
In my experience...big hill climbs are more about momentum than pretty much anything else. Lose momentum and it doesn't matter what bike your on you aren't going to make it.
And with momentum in mind...I think that is where the high horse power bikes come into play.
But I'm not a hill climb guy...so I could be wrong.
Some of you may remember Junior Jackson, he's pretty active in the midwest hillclimb scene. Always got respect for the hillclimbers, go broke or go home attitudes....the get offs are never pretty.

There you have it. I grew up riding hills like that. No joke, me XR75, dad TT500, my brother XT250 used to go to some hills near our house like that. We'd ride from bottom to top, part our bikes and walk (slide) down 1/3 of the way and watch all them city folk with their two-stroke race bikes and riding gear (we wore work boots, jeans, and a glittery open face helmet with no visor) flounder around on the hill. I've seen some really nice bikes turned to junk in a matter of minutes. Seen more than a few left in the bottom for dead.....bikes that is.
