Question: Can Jerry bring a lazer light with him back to 1985?

8/3/2013 6:08am
The starting grid may not be too small, but I think the "enduro du touquet" did not register more than 1200 riders.

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enduro_du_Touquet

Back to the original question, I do not know the answer, and there is no need for the kid to take the big head and say later that he is faster than X or Y from the 80's, but ... honestly I do not think he would be too far off, the pace has also evolved. Maybe that is why some people here were so angry that MX monuments could have been compared to a young kid !!!

Only the uneducated mx fan would even begin to think about a question like this one. The 2nd most uneducated mx fan would make posts like some of the mouthbreathing reply s like above.

I know I'm a little late to the draw on this one but I have no desire to weigh in on the OPs topic.

What I'm wondering though, is with Jerry's final placing in the classes he raced in did he earn a Pro License that would allow him to try his hand at the Nationals or other Pro races, on whatever bike?

Fast B riders today are generally as fast as a Pro from 30 years ago. And Jerry is a fast B rider, '85 bike or not.

Just like college ball players/ field and track athletes now that perform at a level that was considered Pro level 30 years ago.

In fact in Track and Field you can actually look at the timed/ measured events and really have a true comparison and see that it's true. There is a reason that all records get broken year after year. The athletes are just getting better.

Look at Guy Cooper jumping a '74 Bultaco, average Pros were not jumping Bultacos like that in 1974. That's 40 years of riding progression.

You have a point, obviously this thread struck a nerve. The sport has evolved, pros' during the eighties was on another level compared today. Håkan Carlqvist had a regular job next to his racing, which at times was obviously pretty intermittent, in the GP pits some top riders even smoked. These days people take it way more seriously, and talent exemplified in the case of Smets, who become a multiple champ despite starting riding close to twenty isn't really possible any longer. So I totally agree that previous pro in general wouldn't stand up to present standards.

Dunno if the author though of that though? Maybe this new style that this new era brings, with whipping, scrubbing might give the illusion people are faster these days? But to support some of the old farts here, I would bet my money that the former champs would still be champs today, BUT no way would they get away with previous attitude and training regime. RC created a new breed with his training, and the Alessi family and others add suger to this new era in grooming them from the cradle.

Put this kid in any GP race during the eighties, I'm doubting he would be top 20...

But who the fuck knows (some know of course).

I think its a valid question, that shows how the level of riding has stepped up... you cant compare supercross then to supercross now because the tracks are just jump fests with no bumps now, the old tracks were brutal , narrow , tight , and rough and the appearance of speed is just not there.

However, as far as jumps go , kids on 85's were clearing all but one of the jumps at Matterley GP last year , and a couple of guys on 65's were nailing half of them... a half decent small wheel 85 rider round foxhills will clear everything apart from the downhill triple and uphill triple before the finish. Tracks are groomed to death , and speeds are way up , but Jerry Robin can ride , he may never make pro, but he can haul... and one thing i dont get is why its 250B..whats the difference between that and 250A.. surely Barcia winning in B was no big deal, if there is a whole class above them ??

It would be cool for him to come to Farleigh, That i would like to see

Yes the tracks are groomed to death compared to the eighties that's one reason they are faster today, the tracks!

I truly believe a B rider today could beat a pro from the 90's. I know you old timers dont believe that. But the bar has been raised so high as of late if you didnt notice. Racing B class at any amateur national and seeing the times being faster than A class is never a surprise anymore. Our times in mammoth are the same as or are close to the pro lap times. If Jerry Robins was put into a time machine, he could run with those guys. No doubt.

Put both era riders on the same bikes and tracks you wouldn't see a difference!

This is a valid question, and the perfect race to see that would be a 18 year old Damon Bradshaw and an 18 year old Jerry on the same track from the 80's, then on a track from today. I think Jerry is a fast rider with more heart than most anyone around, I do not think he at this point would be fast enough to compete with riders back in the 80's, but give him a couple of years and I bet he could do it.

Bo Jackson to this day has the fastest time in the 40 than any player in NFL history. How long ago was that? So there goes that theory.....

Not sure what makes you squids think that bikes weren't flying 90 or 100 feet back in the late 70's onward .

And Jerry on a 78 husky would probably crash his B-class brains out in 1 lap. No dis on the kid I might add.

Bo Jacksons' time was by done by hand with a stop watch. Not electronically.

Sorry but all those times are off................ If you look at the times there are like 10-15 guys who beat Chris Johnsons 4.24 BUT the ONLY people to beat his time are runners that were timed by hand.

I am sure you will argue but the facts speak for themselves.

Again, if you were there, saw the guys back then train and ride, you would never ask this question.

This is comical.

Are you saying that a young David Bailey on a werx Honda could barely keep up with Jerry robin on that 85? Why that is ludicrous sir. Smile

I think it is pretty simlpe really................. Put RV in a time machine and send him back to 1985 and he stomps those guys. All of them riding the same bikes on the same tracks............................

Now having said that........................ Put RJ, ect.... in a time machine and bring him to 2012. Give him a season to learn the bikes and newer riding techniques and he/they is/are still a champion.

Champion racers are champion racers.... They have that "something" and no matter what decade they are put in or what bike/track they are on they will find a way to win.

To answer the OP's question I think "kinda" yes. Today's fastest B riders could hang okay and today's fastest A riders would win a a few races....................... But only a few races, and then the past champs would figure out the "new" riding style and techniques. Then the past champs would roll over those A & B riders like........ well they were A & B riders.

yeah, our modern day hero on the stock version of the bike would lay waste to Bailey and crew on the factory versions..

all this thread really needs now is stewie to weigh in with his expert opinion..

the clueless factor in this thread is revealing..

A better (and more realistic) matchup is Jerry vs BobbyM circa 1950 or whenever he was at his best... Laughing
