Ok... So I'm very close to getting a bike again after almost 6 years. I have ZERO interest in racing again and looking for a 125 as a project that I can not only build up for fun, but also get some exercise on as I'm starting to get a little doughey around the mid section (ok I'm straight up fat now). There are quite a few locally on Craigslist (which I have 2 to go look at today) that seem to be about right price wise.

Anything I need to know (good or bad) about either? Looking at a 2002 cr125 that appears to be totally stock and in very good shape and an 06 yz125 that doesn't even have any paint worn off the pipe.

Thank you!

The YZ is a better bike by miles. No competition.

But i've never ridden a bike that was more fun than my cr125, it's incredibly slow, but riding a bike that is that slow is extremely fun.

My son has had 2 yz125. Both have been great bikes. His cousin had an early 2000s cr125, always hated the vibration in the bars.
For what it's worth,

Thanks for the opinions! And yes, the fun factor is what I am looking for. My last 125 was a 2001 Honda and I loved that thing. Got a 450 after that (moved into 30+) and had the best racing years of my life until I popped a motor on the face of a jump... Since I am not interested in racing, engine size and HP mean nothing to me plus I can work on the damn thing!

Definitely YZ, it's a great bike.

I've got to say, though, that it takes a metric shit-ton of energy to ride a 125. I shred for 3/4 of a lap before I drop anchor. I hate to say it, but I look longingly at 4 strokes now as a way to live with my lack of fitness. It is something to think about.

You could always make it a 134. This would get it up to the power of the YZ.

But then again you could make the YZ a 134 too.

I have both, A very built CR125 and a YZ125 that is pretty much stock. The CR handles better than the YZ but not by much. The stock YZ is much quicker stock to stock but the built CR is faster than the stock YZ for sure. I imagine the YZ would be incredible with the amount of work done to it as the CR. Both have Race Tech work on the suspension.

I have an 05' cr125 with only basic mods, just wider footpegs, JD jetting kit, some M404/403 tires, PC exhaust, and it's a blast.

It just feels like a Honda, the stock suspension is old but it isn't even that bad... The engine needs to be woken up though. Different reed cage + the jet kit, add in some air vents on the airbox and it will be much more responsive.

I have ridden my buddy's 04 YZ125 and I did like it better. Not sure if was the tubular frame or just insane motor, but I immediately felt more comfortable on it. I'm more of a weekend warrior rider, but let me tell you that SSS suspension is the real deal ...

I'd go with the YZ. Can't go wrong with those bikes.

Of course if you're looking for a good project bike to make fast the CR may be a little more fulfilling. Miedosoracing on here (has some awesome experience with CR125s and increasing the airflow (which is the main reason for the slowness).

He put sss on it? 04's didn't come with it.

I like my 02 yz. It's fast for what it is, I plan on sending the motor to gorr, or maybe tdc performance and make it really fly.

I mean TBH I don't know for fact, I assumed it was when I rode it, maybe you're right and it was not .. We were similar weights so maybe his suspension was just setup better/ revalved. I just remember it being unbelievably plush.

Very fun bike.

the only real thing that the cr 05-07 has over the yz would be the handling but only a slight edge, but the yz has better everything else

Have an YZ 06, a few years ago had an 02 CR, and can't remember how the CR felt now, but the feeling with the YZ feels perfect, and it didn't with the CR. Love the six tranny in they YZ, and I know the 02 CR has a few less ponies than the 05 CR, but the YZ feels SO much more potent, I'm doubting the 05 CR can match that?

So YZ for sure, and they still make them, so you can always upgrade, and parts, aftermarkets, OEM I figure you have more to choose from.

I've got a CR and my buddy has a YZ, both are stock with the exception of pipe/silencer/reeds. Handling wise I'll give a slight edge to the Honda, and it's a few pounds lighter. The YZ definitely has a stronger motor, especially from low-mid. On a flat track where you can hold momentum it isn't super noticeable, but as soon as it gets deep or if there are hills the YZ will pull a length or two on the CR. I love my Honda but If i was going out today to buy one, it would be the Yamaha.

Of course, if you're looking for some fun and need a good project, find a KTM 150 motor and wedge it into the CR frame.

They didn't get the SSS fork until '06.

I have an '06 YZ 125 and I absolutely love the bike. I would never sell it.

The YZ engine and 6 speed trans is far better. It has a good midrange bark and screams up top. With a 50 tooth sprocket, pipe, reed and jetting It will run with anything if you've got the skills. Also, the stock YZ suspension is a bit better.

The downside to the YZ is the handling for some riders. Don't get me wrong, they turn like a dream but the CR is just a tiny bit better for the less dynamic riders. I am used to the YZs, so I move around a whole lot on the bike. If you like to sit in the middle of the seat, the CR will be far better. You have to put your butt on the front of the seat to make a YZ turn, but they go straighter through the rough crap than the CRs.

With a revalve, the CR suspension is probably every bit as good as a revalved YZ, and the CR engine probably has enough potential too.

The nice thing about the YZ is that parts are available all over the place since the model is still being made. Long story short, you won't go wrong either way, but if you're sticking close to stock, the YZ is better hands down.

I have an 05 YZ. They are awesome! I'd love to have an 06 or later because of the improved suspension, but either way, it's a great bike!

Since you say you want to buy a project bike, I assume you'll need to buying parts for it. If that's the case the get a YZ. The bike hasn't had any major changes since 06. 05 is the same except for suspension. Other than that it's been little changes like slightly shorter silencers from the 06 to 07. Pretty much every part interchanges though. Wheel sets are the same from 99 to present.

I believe Honda was always changing things on the 125 from year to year or every other year. Limits your parts search.

YZ's are pretty bullet proof. I just sold an 06 and 07 my son raced/practiced on for 3 or 4 years. Only issue I ever had was when a very low hour Namura piston skirt broke. My son's only issue was trying to stay with 250Fs in the deep stuff and the corners and the starts and the hard pack and the whoops.....hmmm maybe it wasn't the bike ?? Sad

Honestly, hp doesn't matter at this point to me... In fact, the slower the better! All kidding aside, i just miss riding and i will be happy as long as its reliable. I haven't ridden in almost 6 years and have lingering affects from an exploded right heel so a monster of a 125 is unnecessary. I simply want to put some laps in and shed a few pounds.

As far as being dynamic, i can adapt to any bike and any setup and ride the shit out of it (to the best of my ability!). I think the 1993 yz125 was known to be one of the slowest bikes ever and i won a ton of 125b motos on it that year.

I definitely appreciate everyones comments and i will lean towards the yamaha if i can find one. Unfortunately, everything ive seen is priced like it has a couple of gold bars hidden in the airbox. The 02 cr125 i looked at yesterday needs a top end, a complete rear wheel (hub and wheel were ovalled out from never tightening the spokes and finally started pulling the nipples through the wheel) and the rear suspension had about 2" of play. Yep and he wants $2100!

I have an 03 CR134, with porting, head and power valve mod, air striker carb, rad valve, 07 air boot and air box vents, god knows what else. My son has my old 05 YZ125. With all the mods I did the CR motor is about on a par with the stock YZ, maybe a hair faster. The CR handles and turns quite a bit better. I can't compare the suspension because the 05YZ did not have the SSS stuff and the CR has B kit suspension.

I think the kicker is the 6 speed on the YZ but I would not trade my CR for his (my old) YZ.

Just in case you find yourself desiring more power, send a pm to miedosoracing here on vital. He has dealt with the CR airflow problem. Otherwise, get the CR and ride the dog out of it.

I had an 05 with pretty much the same setup. I put 05 Showa CRF forks on it as well. I also have an 05 and 06 YZ's and have ridden the piss out of them all.

The CR134 is one of the best handling, most fun bikes I've ever ridden. Powerwise, it does not have the midrange of the YZ, but if you've ridden 125's as you came up thru the ranks, you'll be totally fine with that. It's a friggen buzz saw.

Handling, the 06YZ is significantly better than the 05. MUCH less fade when you get past 15-20 minutes. But that CR with the Showa forks is freaking awesome. Every rider that's been on it (that knows how to ride a 125) gets off with the biggest grin on their face!

Id go with the YZ125 and im a honda guy..the cr is a friggin TURD.

Pipes, reeds, jetting and your yz125 will be COOKIN!!

A cr125 might feel like every other 125 once you punch it out to 144cc and run race gas
