Stripped nut! Help.....

Any ideas how to get a lock nut off? It's spinning on the bottom shock bolt on the linkage,it's almost on all the way,but it's just spinning in place now,won't come off or tighten,it's brand new,just tearing it down to grease. Any suggestions?thanks guys

are you sure there isn't a bolt head on the other side...?

If not, you can try to wedge a flat-bladed screw driver behind the nut to hold pressure against it while backing it off.

Take it to the shop and show them, they should fix it for you in good faith. Otherwise drill through it with a bit the same diameter as the bolt and replace the whole thing.

Cut almost all the way through the nut, and then break it apart with some leverage.

It's my new 13 kx450, i over torqued it,i went 45#, not 25#, and now it spins either direction,but won't back off

Jason...you have the "nut" side of the bolt.....the other side should be machined with two flat edges which slide into a groove on the linkage correct? Is there anyway to get the opposite side to stop spinning?

I think what he is saying is that the not is spinning on the stripped part of the bolt,not the bolt spinning.
Try the screw driver behind the nut method.Or
Drill as mention before or cut it off if there is room to do so.

The bolt is locked in place,it's the dang lock nut,guess I'll get a cutting wheel for my dremel

Does the locknut have metal threads with the locking deal or is it a full on "Nylock" nut. If it is a nylock hit that sucker with a torch or heat gun to heat up the nylon and pry it off. I doubt it would be a nylock on a linkage but figured I would toss this out there.

However with it being a new bike you probably would like to avoid setting something on fire. Laughing

It doesn't have any threads left inside the nut ,plastic or metal from the sounds of it .

There is a much simpler way to do it and it takes 1 minute or less. If the nut is spinning on the bolt, it doesn't matter if the head of the bolt is captive, or just a bolt head. Threads on the nut and or bolt are stripped. Just get a decent sized punch with a flat head , and a 16 or 20 oz. steel hammer. Place the punch on the center of the bolt where the nut screws on, and smack it good once or twice, and it's out. Then you just need a new nut and bolt. Done it before in similar situations, and it always works.

That is why they make a nut cracker tool. Pick up one at Harbor Freight for a few dollars. It will split the nut and it will come right off without damaging the bolt threads.

I doubt there is any thread left on the bolt if it is damaged to the point the nut is not backing off. I would go get a new nut and bolt then drill the bolt out like slip dog said if it were me.

besides, a nylock nut doesn't have nylon threads it just has a nylon collar attached to grip the bolt.

I must be using the wrong term then. I have encountered some weird type of nut that were all plastic on the inside. It was on some farm equipment I was working on with my cousin and we had to heat them up and pry and hammer out the bolts.

Got it off! Dremel to the rescue, Beaverton motorcycles took another bolt off a floor model,sweet ,gonna get my braaap on tomorrow!

Huh?

You just whack on the end of the bolt and what happens? It just breaks off? Without bending or galling the linkage?

Sandberm, yes you just whack the bolt. The treads are stripped. The nut just won't turn off because of it. Not much holding it, just that it won't turn off.It's not stuck like it's rusty. The bolt doesn't break off, it just pops out because nothing is holding it in. Doesn't hurt a thing,. The threads are shot. A good tap pops out the bolt, and your good.
