Too old to moto? Anyone dual sporting?

I'm 53 with a 525 KTM EXC. I don't ride it on the street any though, the knobbies cry. Has a plate, but no strret for me.

Had Honda and Yamaha 750's in my late teens and early 20's, can believe I survived those days.

Thanks! I love it. I'm probably going to have it until the day I die. I actually know where Balboa Saloon is but sadly I moved back to the lame state of Missouri to go to school. But I'll definitely be back to southern California soon.

The pic I posted is just after I dual sported it before the cut off. around Jan. 1, 2004 I think. In this pic it has a EBC oversize front disc.

Over the years the disc got bent out of whack - oversize discs & gnarly rocks don't play well so, I'm running the stocker for now.

Rojo Grande currently is running the stock tank & seat, Applied triple clamps & PC T-4 exhaust.

After 30 years of riding, it brings back the kid again. No way to describe the feeling of being able to go way into the backcountry on a bike. Basically three different things: Dual Sport, plated dirt bike riding, and Adventure Touring. DS is bikes 650 cc's, and plated dirt bikes are just that. I have a DS bike and a plated dirt bike.

I'm fine though with the lack of competition. Once I hopped on the WR and headed down the street I realized it is all about the two wheels that brings satisfaction.

Man I can't believe the setups some of you guys have. I realize I am not really dual sporting just yet, I m riding my plated dirt bike on the street with the occasional dirt road/trail thrown in. I need to get into some of these adventure rides you guys are taking. Thanks for the great pictures

Around here trials tires (on the rear) are the weapon of choice for a lot of singletrackers, they don't tear the trail up as much and give fantastic traction. The problem with the serious trials tires is they get really hot when you ride them on the roads at high speeds over longer distances. This may not be an issue with the old cheng shins and nittos of our youth, but the hi end dunlops and michelins that you run at 8 lbs of pressure scream after a couple of miles of pavement.

I did a 5 days of riding in the Taylor Park area of Co. buddy of mine with a 2007 WR 450 ran a rear trials tire with zero problems,another guy ran a front trials tire.
The altitude kicked my butt the first three days,just when I was feeling a little stronger my shock blew a seal and the next two days were like riding a Pogo stick,still had a lot of fun though.
The weather can go from fairly warm to freezing in short order so go prepared.

Seriously though I just started doing off road stuff and having a blast. I moto also but sometimes its just a nice change to cruise throug the forrest across rivers and deserts w a few beverages. fun stuff!

About ten years ago I made the decision to stop pounding my body on MX tracks ( or at least greatly reduce that type of
riding ) and bought a dual sport bike. We go on some great adventures on these bikes, riding in TX, ARK, CO,CA,NM,MEX etc.
Much of the scenery is spectacular and only accessible by jeep or bikes ( which cover so much more ground than a Jeep )
I have a XR650L and DR650 currently....way too much fun !

I go in to Baja every month. Things changed a few years back. Also, you need to get a Visa to go into Baja-Sur.

If you fly home form Baja Sur (Cabo, for example) they take your Visa on exit. If you ride out you can keep it and its good for 6 mos.

You haven't Moto'd 'til you've Wheelied on the beach in Baja.

After 5 years of riding Rip to the Tip & /Rip to Cabo...I'm hooked!

It's run during the Ahrma MX/XC round.
You have a tag, it's 125 miles thru the woods.
I think it's 10 bucks to ride.

I have. Its been beat to death on Race Dezert. You do not need a passport to cross back into the US in a vehicle. Your supost to but its no issues if you dont have one.

I raced my first desert race at the 500. I had a blast. Nothing like I have ever experienced before.
Finished 3rd 30+ bike.
The stories you gather from that is unreal.
And yes I weelied down a beach hahaha!

I had a 640 Enduro, 530 EXC and now, a DRZ400S. The OP is exactly where I was about 8 years ago. The issue with DS'ing is always the compromise. How racey do you want to be. Race bike with turn signals or, street bike with knobbies? The very best resource I've found is a forum called ADVrider. Anything you want to know about ANY DS bike is on there. You can spend days there. The DR650 thread is over 5000 pages. Very cool site.
