I think there should be, lose the goggles you have to pull in and get new ones , or get dq'd

Think about it, people don't chuck the helmet when they get hot and im sure they would get black flagged if they did.

As much shit as these bikes throw , I believe this should be a no brainer.

I think yes. Losing a little time on the track as opposed to losing an eye ? It is a no brainer.

What racers have lost an eye by throwing their goggles?
Something tells me I won't get an answer.

Probably none. But just because it hasn't happened, doesn't mean it can't happen

How about we fix ACTUAL problems occurring as apposed to imaginary ones that might?

So lets say you're leading the race, there's a few laps to go and you run out of tear-offs, how bullshit would it be if you got disqualified for chucking them... Not gunna happen.

Also, you can't compare a pair of goggles to a helmet, worst case scenario you will lose an eye. Riding without a helmet? Well, we all know what could happen.

It's more common then you think. Not so much "losing an eye" but damage to the eye is very easy.

First example coming to mind is Brett metcalfes brother lost most of his vision in one eye from removing his goggles in a mud race.

No matter how bad your vision is you should never remove your goggles, whipe them or get a new pair, never take them off.

I don't think this should be a rule though, these guys are grown up and can make their own decisions. If they choose to risk part of their vision for a few race positions then roll that dice.

With all the former NFL players filing lawsuits about all of the injuries that the league didn't protect them from, it makes me wonder what kind of lawsuits the AMA is opening themselves up to by what safety regulations they don't implement.

I don't think the goggle rule should be implemented for reasons stated above. But you can also ask questions about should they require spine protectors? hand guards? knee pads? wrist/elbow protection? You can make a list a mile long about whether they should implement necessary safety requirements but I think they currently have a good balance with the safety rules. Especially given that MX racing is inherently dangerous.

And I think a " PAIR" of goggles should be two sets of goggles.

Just like a pair of panties or pair of bra.

In my opinion, no. Why make a rule to eliminate something that hasn't been a problem? Better put up a traffic light coming into the pit tents during a muddy race!

I don't think so. Everyone has thrown goggles off when I couldn't see through them anymore. I can understand why they do it.

I think it's very reasonable to ask that a rider not make more than 1 lap without goggles, hell they get fined for running over the yellow stakes.

Mark Blackwell's career ended pretty much after a stone to the eye.

I agree with Jay's position here

What about mud races where everyone's goggles are off after 2 laps? Should they have to stop every lap to get new goggles? That would be rediculous. If a guy can't see through his goggles and feels safer removing them he shouldn't be penalized for it, or he'll be tempted to keep them on and try to ride blind.

If they can't be expected to wear chest protectors how the hell can we expect to force them to wear goggles? And yes, you can, and people have, died because they weren't wearing a chest protector.

Now Matthes can stand on the track and hand out goggles while posting Twitter updates.

that would be stupid. pretty much everyone bails on the goggles in most wet/mud races, and riding in general.

I's rare for me to agree with most stuff you post Jay but you're spot on with this. Mostly because I'm sick of seeing kids drop the googles after a crash because they think that's what the pro's do. Kid's eyes are too precious to waste looking cool.
My boy doesn't ride without even when the conditions are bad 'cos I'll be standing next to the track with fresh prepared spare pairs, ready to swap. Faster with than without.

Goggles are a funny area whereby the effectiveness of that piece of safety equipment very much depends on a degree of luck. There are instances when you just can't see and no amount of wiping with muddy gloves will resolve the issue. Should someone come in for a fresh pair after removing their goggles? Possibly - probably yes. Should they be made too? Imo no. There aren't enough instances to justify it.

Let's say RD is holding back RV with 2 laps to go during a mud race. At some point on the 2nd to last lap RD gets sprayed by a lapped rider and his goggles are ineffective: he can't see, so he ditches them. Are we then going to make RD come in on the last lap with Villopoto right behind, just because it's written in the rules that he must do? Thus destroying the race.

Again, we haven't had enough eye injuries to justify it (more people have probably been hurt, sometimes fatally, by heat extremes in the weather). Therefore it's up to the conscience of the individual to make a personal decision.

However I would advise that they don't ever remove their goggle unless absolutely necessary (i.e they literally can't be salvaged) and I think education and pressure towards not removing your goggles (particularly for younger riders) is a good thing. But extending that as a rule in pro racing? No.

No. That's crazy.

Why is everybody so effin' worried about what other guys are doing?

What is this, I wanna be a crossing guard week or something?

Dogooderitis abounds...............................

theres too many conflicts to warrant this, e.g say you are leading a moto by 10 secconds, loose your goggles with only 2 laps to go, pull in to get a new set (or get disq). Chances are you aregoing to loose the lead, and for what, 2 laps?

I had to pitch a set of BEER goggles once. Honestly, I don't think they where working right or doing me any good. I think my results would have been the same had I kept them on vs. throwing them to the side. Found out the next moring that I finished dead last in the "chewing the arm off" contest.
