Based on rough observation I would say the jury is unfortunately still out on this one. No worries.....no one ever gets hurt in this sport so it's not like a critical piece of protective equipment.....especially the models that provide spinal protection too.

I don't know about cool, but I won't wear one. Ever. I've never worn one except a few times that I tried them, and I crashed every time. And every buddy of mine who broke a bunch of ribs was wearing one. So, no thanks. I started racing in 1970 and nobody wore them, and I just can't get past the feeling that I'm in some kind of middle age jousting match.

I do occasionally wear an under protector if the dirt is real clumpy.

Cool or not my Dainese Downhill MTB suit saved me a lot of skin. I wore it racing bicycles doesn't bother me one bit on my 450.

Plastic roost protectors are great for just that. Roost.
Other then that, the under protectors you see guys like Stewart wearing are very popular.

You simply can't see people wearing them, but many do.

I wear an old Hallman chest protector with full shoulder, elbow and forearm armor. I've crashed and landed on my shoulder, and didn't feel a thing.

And I wear it on the outside of my jersey. Fashion be damned!!

funny thing is, I am getting back to riding after a 11 year break that there are so few options out there for chest protectors now a days...maybe it isn't funny now that I think about it.

What are some of the better options out there now I still have my old Hallman and AXO chest protectors but they are all warped and cant be worn anymore. I was looking at both TLD and FOX what are your opinions out there on what works well with an atlas neck brace?

They really are only for roost protection and may save a little skin. They are good for off road where branches are beating on you too. I always wear one but I'm an old guy. If you think they will save you from broken ribs or a collarbone break, you are fooling yourself.

Well in your hand guard thread you said Geico makes their riders where them. Show me Tomac wearing one

IF i was riding, this is deff. something i would be looking into, considering my situation, that backplate sure looks essential! No idea if it would of saved me, but it sure couldnt of hurt? Blink

check out some of his under armor, which is a custom-made piece from Fox Racing that integrates the sleeves from their Titan Sport Jacket, a well-ventilated chest plate from a Proframe LC Roost Deflector, and a back protector from Ortema.

Troy Lee not Geico.

You really can not say protection won't save you from a broken collarbone or ribs. Too many variables but one thing I know for sure when I have 400 plus pounds rolling over my upper body I will take all the protection I can wear.

ocscottie-Roczen is no dummy.

For the record roost protectors don't even come close to providing any real chest protection in a crash scenario.

I rock a Fox Raceframe and couldn't care less if I look like an old dork (which I am). I don't see how wearing it could do anything but help in the event of a crash. I also like that you can take it off in between sessions and cool off quicker than the under jersey I have.

My boys where the bullriding vest style ones from Second Moto and will continue to do so as long as I pay the bills. They have taken hits to the torso that would take down a horse and walked away. Once my Scott chest pro is done I will probably get one also. Most MX'ers are too stupid to put safety before fashion, though........

If you watch the podium interviews from TV you can see Tomac wearing an under the jersey type. Alias must not make one because the one Tomac has on you can clearly see it say TLD thru his jersey.

I used to rock the thor scattershield for like 10 years under my jersey. They were pretty comfy without the arms. I remember stealing the idea from Tallon Vohland haha. Dude was a bad mofo.

That makes a lot of sense. I know a buddy who got a concussion wearing a helmet so I don't wear one now. WTF? Its like not wearing knee-cups. More protection is better.

Yes, it's true. Chest protectors protect from nothing but roost. Clearly you're better off hitting the ground with nothing more than a nylon jersey on. Common sense, really.

im exactly the same! wont race without wearing it, in my opinion it protects from more than roost- its one of the more substantial armours on the market today. (well padded thick plastic chest, back, and shoulder protection) Pretty sure if someone was to hit me in the chest or back with a sledgehammer I would fare better injury wise with the armour on than I would with just a jersey! same in the event of a crash..

no f*cks given on what I look like- injuries= time off work so wearing good armour is a no brainer for me. I use hand guards too - and a good quality helmet (bell moto 9 this year but always had aria's previously)

- seems stupid to me that most people don't wear any body armour nowadays, I don't think It restricts movement at all so its ridiculous that they choose not to protect their ribs/ back!

who cares if they are 'cool' or not!

man the guys that say they do nothing but stop roost are absolute retards, maybe some old shit one but with some offering ce level now they are more than just roost protection (most wouldn't say more than that as to your stupid legal sueing system)

Once I did an OTB like Stewart in Daytona (passing a lapper, had to change the line, came fast in a more vertical rut): I took the bike on the back +-12 meters further (500 kg???), and the peg on the shoulder blade. I was wearing a Sinisalo chest protector and had just a small 5 cm scar, nothing broken.

Another time: I washed my front end in a down hill in 4th gear. I got up 12 meters later, the bike 20, a bit bruised but I guess the 3 mm rubbed down from the JT chest protector helped.

For me it is as crazy to not wear chest/back protectors as boots, knee braces and helmet. By the way, thanks ocscottie for Roczen pictures, I could not find it again.

I have worn them for as long as I have been riding, I'm the only person my age i know who wears one. What i find most use full is i don't have to have the annoying straps on for my neck brace because my chest protector holds it in place.

It's worth noting that Kenny has trouble in hot races. All that insulation can't help.

He should do many little holes, also in his jersey / pants. (but not in the helmet, knee braces and boots Smile )

I crashed 11 days ago and I WISH I was wearing a chest protector. I crossrutted on a table top landing and was flung to the ground like a rag doll, the bars smashed me on the left side of my chest/ribs and my shoulder was crushed big time. Yes, a trip to the ER for me! After xrays it was determined bruised/seperated ribs and muscle damage in my shoulder, with potential rotator cuff damage. Sad

I went to Bobs Cycle yesterday and tried on chest protectors, the damage to my body could have been easily avoided with the addition of a chest protector. My damaged ribs/chest fit right behind the plastic on the Scott I purchased and my shoulder would have had coverage also, I guarantee I would be riding right now instead of nursing my bad ribs/shoulder. I cant sleep at night, I have a hard time taking a deep breath and am generally in alot of pain.

So go ahead, dont wear a chest protector, your choice, but I will never ride without one again. My chest protector is now on the same list as my helmet and knee braces, no riding EVER without them.

Here is me in the er, good times, NOT!

Totally right and I agree. I'm amazed at the number of people who don't wear anything. OK it may not save you, but I'd want to at least know that I'd done everything reasonably possible to prevent it. And in my mind having "something" there as opposed to just a jersey.... could likely make all the difference in a good many situations. Well done to Kenny there on setting a good example.

Tomac's heavily "aerated" TLD CP 5955:
