Carlesbad came to mind right off the bat here as well. That place was like concrete. Gatorback was like that back in the day and my elbow is still bruised from just falling over like 20 years ago there. They brought lots of sand in now.

I never got the chance to ride down Bonzai hill, but just standing at the top looking down was almost like standing at the top of Half Dome in Yosemite...

I always thought it was more like the back half of Half Dome. I walked down it once. The further you went, the steeper it got.

So spark, I assume you ride a 1970s bike, and wear an open face helmet? Everything in motocross has improved, including track prep.

Track prep " improvement" is not necessarily a good thing. The best tracks ever were not groomed immaculately. I will say that pre race practice at Saddleback was an art form. Holding your feet off the pegs at full throttle while trying to keep from getting cross rutted, Priceless!!!!!!

A 'prepped' track is also (generally) easier.

Banzia was knarl, the first couple times down it at speed was scary, you just were along for the ride. Once you did it a few times it wasn't bad, but the first few times took some faith because when you came around the first turn you were wide open headed towards a cliff.

Im almost willing to bet that even back then, people complained about the track conditions. There was no VitalMX.com and I doubt anyone got on party lines (any phreakers in here) and talked Moto..

The ruts were DEEP during practice. My first time there for a race I was suprised at how the track came together after practice.

Except for the dust factor, I actually think the opposite is true. Even with modern bikes, it would be hard to get a lot of momentum going with the kind of track prep they had in those Saddleback days. I look at a lot of the local tracks today, and they seem like TT tracks (smooth, lots of cushion, long straights, sweeping turns) with big jumps. High speeds, big obstacles...small wonder people these days get so much more mangled when they go down.

Johnny O' jumping Suicide Mountain on a 125 - 1984 National - 2nd moto. That was really steep going up and down. Only a few ever jump the terraces on Suicide Mountain. Banzai you learned to up shift in mid-air to the next higher gear. If you didn't you landed completely tapped out going into Webco. The start hill was considered the worlds best natural engine dyno.
