major bummer, but i dont blame the dude..hes got a family to take care of and it'd suck even more if he got busted up real bad and left behind his wife an daughter. there is way more to life than just riding and racing.

Never a fan of Townley but glad to hear he has the sense to quit while he can still walk. He rode with a lot of desire but it seemed to be more than his level of skill the last few years..

Great rider...He would have made great money in the gps battling with AC and desalle. Chose to race in america and got hurt bad many times racing SX. After so many hits to the head and body , he was never the same. Good luck BT.

This is sad news. Ben was a great rider, but has just had such a bad run with injuries in recent years. I'm sure this has been a tough decision to make, but it is probably the smart thing to do at this point. I wish him the best.

The older I get and the more I ride the more I think that riding and racing IS life. But Ive never been hurt like he has.

That is not exactly true - from memory, only four of his injuries occurred on the Supercross track.

I'm sure Ben could have continued to do well had he stayed in the GP's, but his dream was always to race in the USA.

man this sucks. i still think the best mx lites season was between him and rv battling all year long. such an amazing rider that just got sucked up by injuries. he could have easily been one of the best, but this sport also requires luck, and luck wasnt on his side.

I agree, that season was unreal between RV and Townley. That Milville race was some of the best most intense racing I've ever witnessed for sure !

Each year I looked forward to him coming back to the states. Certainly is a bummer because watching him ride in person at the Nats is something to be seen. Some guys with the most talent can just never peak due to constant injuries (Hepler, Canard, Townley).

Yeah bummer, I really wanted to see him race this year. Another twist in our nationals, and it doesn't start for another couple of weeks. He was one of the favorites to win it. I am sure he will stay in the industry.

One of the coolest guys ever to make this sport a career. I wish him the best. He had a great career. I honestly believe that if he'd stayed healthy, we'd be talking about the elite eight right now, Stewart has no undefeated MX season, 2011 has even more depth, and Dungey has a fight to the end in 2010. He's one of the most talented ever to throw a leg over a dirt bike.

As others have said, it's sad and hard to believe he only had two relatively healthy outdoor seasons (2007 & 2010) since his move in 2006. So much potential derailed by so much misfortune. Still, it's been a great run and a successful career nevertheless.
