Get this my fellow motorheads. I just checked the District 11 website (southern Ohio), and there are NO motocross races scheduled for 2013. WTF!

I was looking at the pitracer website awhile back, and I think there is no more D11.

There used to be a dozen mx tracks back in the 80's. I guess the future of mx is in serious trouble.

It takes a lot of dough to run a track or race. Economy sucks.

Plus a lot of tracks follow out dated business models. High entry fees, high gate fees and expensive race bikes with expensive maintanence all contribute.

Just what are these out dated bussiness models you speak of?

When I was home in Dayton for the holidays I went to lunch with a bunch of my old racing buddies. I was stunned to hear the DMC was closed in Dayton now. I hope Dirt Country is still open in Blanchester.

In the early 70s it was Fairborn, Richmond, Eaton, Lewsiburg, Vera Cruz, Bright, Indiana

In the mid 70s it was all Highland Hills, Honda Hills, Mid Ohio...occasionally Muskingame Valley and over to Winchester for the Aschingers' track.

Late 70s Dirt Country surfaced and I loved racing at night there.

Now there are no D11 races scheduled? Oh well people are going to the SX and Nationals so the sport is doing just fine, right? The biggest thing our sport needs right now isn't more semis but more grass roots level participants IMO but if there aren't tracks or riding areas around........

Motocross in Ohio is not dead, it's evolving.

Ohio Motocross Association - 38 regular races in 2013 at some really nice tracks like OIR, Crow Canyon, Dirtworld, Briarcliff etc.

Living in Cincinnati, I can attest to the fact that there are LIMITED options to ride a GOOD MX track on the weekends. I find myself making the 3 hour trek to Fast Traxx and Briarcliff very often. 3 hours to practice on a good MX track is pretty damn far IMO. Closest track is 1 hour away and I would rather ride pavement because it is never prepped. There are a few tracks 1.5-2 hours away but are just OKAY. In order to ride something great, I am driving at least 3 hours.

I was in the Newark area yesterday and decided to just drive by Honda Hills. The signs are still there, but I can still remember it when Dick Klamfoth ran it and how beautifully kept the place was. Now it just looks abandoned, lots of overgrowth, track washed out, driveway almost non-existent. It's not that it was a great track in the 80's, but it had a HUGE turnout. I'm talking damn near full gate in every class. I'd love to win the lottery, refurbish the place (maybe even get the track opened back up to the south when they ran under the pedestrian bridge) and run minimalist classes. I remember when I road there where pee wee, 65, mini jr/sr, schoolboy, 125 a/b, 250 a/b, open a/b, and senior. That's it. Now there are 40 classes and each has 3 to 5 riders. I think too many people complained that some group was getting a speical class for age and maybe they where being left out. Or perhaps, some thought if there was a class taylored to a very limited group, the chance of winning would be greater. Personally, I'd rather race a full gate.

^ This.

There are also around 3 solid, successful offroad series that have no AMA ties in the area. These racing series' have basically ran D11 out of business with the way they treat their racers.

2013 schedule:
http://www.district11ama.com/Schedule/

3 tracks hosting harescrambles in '13. No MX, No GP's

We would all love to believe that, but in all actuality the economy can't be that bad. I know it is different for everyone but my lifestyle hasn't changed at all in these "tough" economic times. My salary has fluctuated around 10 grand over the past 5 years, my best income being 2008 right before the crash. Guess what, the stock market has recovered to the highest it has ever been, and regardless of unemployment numbers, if you want to work there are jobs out there. I just really hope we aren't putting our heads in the sand and blaming the economy for "all" of the problems the sport is encountering. I don't know how to fix these problems, but I sure am tired of hearing the same old excuse.

I've never been to Briarcliff yet, but I'd love to take my son there for a day of riding. I wonder if most of these tracks are still AMA affiliated. I did see where a track in Chillicothe requires a different kind of membership, not sure who or what it is. I do know that between AMA membership fees, gate fees, class fees, and others, things can get pricey pretty quick.

putting our heads in the sand

These two go hand in hand in this false economy today

Have you tried New Vienna near Wilmington Oh? Mike is working hard to make the place a much better facility. Last year he really put effort into makeing the tracks as good prep wise as weather allows.

Yes, I have ridden there a few times and enjoyed it. Still not on the level of Briarcliff or Fast Traxx. Maybe I'm just getting picky. I only ride about once a week and when I do I want to ride the best track around...

Buckeye Hills is also fairly close but gets really one lined and seems kinda like a farm track. Again, there are a few tracks but nothing that is great within an hour or hour and half. I will have to give New Vienna another shot...

Welcome to three months ago.

Also in case you missed it, Millsaps is leading the Supercross points 2013 and the new CRF450s have dual exhaust.

Thanks for the pics Rup. I never realized that Scenic Highlands was in District 11. (it was in District 12 for anyone keeping score)
