I have always thought that the freight train that Stewart was in the 125's assumed it would run over RC when JS moved to the big bikes. When it didn't happen, especially when RC rode JS into the ground outdoors, Stewart's confidence eroded. He thought of himself as unbeatable and when Carmichael handed it to him time after time his ego just couldn't take it. I don't think he ever recovered from that.

I agree, that last season when RC did the first few races Stewart was clearly a beaten man, RC had him pretty much in his pocket. He was just waiting for RC to retire so he could get back to dominating but it never really happened to the extent that we thought it would (24-0 was great in terms of consistency but his competition that year are barely top 10 guys today).

I think RC broke Stewart's belief that he was untouchable, he seemed to lose a bit of his swagger after getting owned outdoors and beat for titles indoors. RC also showed the field how to beat Stewart i.e. pressure him until he wads up.

If RC had retired the year Stewart went to the big boy class then Stewart's career would have been one of domination IMO.
you mean like when stew led rc at red bud 07 almost the entire time both motos and pulled away several times?

Yes agreed, but would James feel like he succeeded or got the most from his freaky talent?

yeah, he's beaten the best riders in history and is revered and feared for his out right SPEED on track. walk around the pro pits sometime and ask around. they'll tell you stew is the fastest hands down. even rv has said it.
I am not doubting that, as he well deserves this respect. But you know what, when Stew went to Suzuki I thought, this is it, he will be back in the championship hunt and most likely leading the way. But through out MX and now SX the Suzuki hasnt seem to have made the difference I was expecting. James still looks incredible on the motorcycle and still has the speed to win, however things dont seem to be going in that direction.
James is often make insinuations he back and ready to win, as he did before A2, but again it didnt work out.
I watched the coverage of pre A1 press conference and James already seemed frustrated before the race started, as he took a dig at the media.
Dont take it I am not a JS7 fan I am a fan of any guy who can make a main event, they all have incredible skill and mental determination.

RC had nothing else to prove after winning every god damn championship there is. James had his number in speed in SX.....but remind me who kept winning the titles?

rc didnt race scooters to prove a point, he raced scooters to win...simple as that. he knew if he wanted to win with james(james speed) in the game he'd have to train and work harder than ever before. could he have beaten james more often than not? probably...but that wasn't what i stated in my previous post.

You said James made RC retire "before" he wanted to. I call complete bullshit on that. RC had finished out a 10yr pro career that made him train his ass into the ground. Christ man......what happened in 2007 during Ricky's farewell tour? He was already starting to pack on some weight and wanted to do a 1/2 season. "For fun".........he went out and won every single race he entered except I think one round in SX.

He went out on a high note , for fun , and proved a point. He had James' , Chad's , Kevins and everyone elses' numbers his entire career. He would also have a few more championship trophies if he would of kept going.....I don't think anyone could come up with a logical explanation to say that he wouldn't. He would of evolved like Reed.....which as of last year......was still giving guys like RV , RD and James fits. Except.......RC always beat Chad as well.

So Bobby......that is why I'm calling bullshit on "James made RC retire early". RC retired because he was done , and had nothing else to prove. You saying some other rider made him retire......is like smearing mud on his career......just doesn't sit right.

Yeah, not true. I was there. Rc caught and passed js in first moto then went down and lost 5 seconds and made that time up and was on his ass at the finish. Second moto had some good racing but rc eventually pulled away and won. Not really sure what race you were watching. I remember it well. Alessi led first lap and was doing fist pumps over the leap he was so happy to be leading a lap.

It took Carmichael three seasons to beat McGrath, but he only gave Stewart two chances. I genuinely believe James would have won the '07 SX title, even if Ricky had continued. RC only won 2 of the 7 Supercross races he entered in 2007, BTW.

Take off your Carmichael jersey for just a minute and think about that, brah.

I think going supercross only in his prime, that distracting TV series and re-signing to ride a bike he disliked are 3 more recent factors that could crush any competitors mojo! Esp when you consider the focus RC had at that stage in his career.

To me, its as simple as this:

James is without a doubt one of the fastest and best RIDERS but is missing something when it comes to RACING. Ricky, Chad, RV, they are all great RACERS.

I'm a fan of James and want to see him do well, but I just don't think he's the best racer anymore.

Chad Reed's comments attacking James riding techniques exploit this even more?
What is it that has stopped James from becoming the champion he was destined to become?

Holy Christ that is the mother load of all loaded questions!

!st......James has had an awesome career! Nobody can say that he hasn't. Could it of been a lot better....with more championships?.....Hell yeah it could have.

James is the only one that can truly answer that question. But from a major fan ( like myself )........it's hard to put into words exactly what went through his head on some of his decisions. Not just on the track....but off as well.

I think one of the things that has hindered James is something even himself doesn't understand. "To me".....it always seems to boil down to something simple as " lack of concentration ".

FWIW....In years past I've been hard on the guy....but especially this past year , I've really grown to appreciate him being out there giving it his all. I used to get so friggin' pissed off when he made some stupid / whacked out mistake that ended up taking a few riders out with him. It was like " He just didn't give a shit ".....Now , I don't think that is the case at all. I think he does care what happens out there......he just goes a little berserk at times.....And I have no idea why. I don''t think he does either.........because some of the decisions he has made it all boils down to......."Go for fucking broke....and let the cards fall where they may"

That's my take anyways.
Read: the new guys in the field are faster than James.

It blows but its true.

How can anyone look at the qualifying times and say "so-and-so is faster than Stewart"? You can say RV was victorious in this race or that race, but to say anyone is FASTER than Stewart around a track is totally false.

Him RC and Reed in SX on 2 strokes always going 1,2,and 3 was some of the best SX racing ever. Those three ruled .
Ding, ding, ding winner, winner chicken dinner! I get so bored seeing all the guys do the same stuff. I remember how cool it used to be to watch and wait for the top 3 or 4 do certain sections or jump combos that nobody else would do.........it gave you something to look forward too.......four strokes kinda suck, and on a supercross track it sounds like they are barely on the gas half the time.

Don't worry, there is going to be one hotrod of a two-stroke in the 450 class at Daytona.

Are you talking about winning practice?

How anyone can think that a practice/qualifying session or an 8 lap heat race against half the field is more significant than 20 laps against the whole field is beyond me.

It's semantics. Terminology. You can argue the point until your balls fall off, I don't care.

In 1986 it seemed like RJ would kill it forever....................he got hurt.....young guys like Stanton, Bradshaw, Larocco, Kiedrowski, and Bayle showed up........

We could write the same book about Hannah and all the young guys in the early 80's........

Adding to what Bobby said.......I have wondered if RC ever thought he hung it up too early........scared off by James, but maybe jumped the gun. I think Ricky likes to see James and Chad win because he beat those guys and feels that he could still win as long as they are winning.

I was wrong on that 2007 SX stat...my bad. He won two....but only ran 7 races. James may of won the title with RC there the whole season.....but with RC's record on winning championships......I think he still would of come out on top at the end.

I couldn't agree more. I don't think anyone scared RC off......but after 10yrs I think he just had enough. He started a family and he had already proved everything there was to prove. Why risk it?

Reason why I believe this is in MX RC entered 6 races....and won all 6.....with a healthy James. In SX James was faster......but with RC running an entire season who knows if James would of even finished the season?

I think James was able to push the 2 stroke to the limit comfortably, the 4 stroke has so much power James just pushes too far sometimes. It's just his desire to win. Modern 4 strokes on a supercross track is like Indy cars on a go cart track.

I heard RC challenged Bubba to a hot dog eating contest! Bubba was faster, RC was lucky as hell a few times and more consistent.

I think he just lost all of his motivation after the 08 MX season. At that point, he had won everything he could possibly win, with a perfect season to boot. Then, he went SX only in his prime, which in my opinion was the biggest mistake of his career. It's always harder to stay at the top than it is to get there. It is crazy to think he never defended a championship. As far as pure speed goes, if I had to have one fast lap, I'm still betting on Stewart. Hence his heat race dominance for his entire career. The shorter the race, the more it benefits him.

I sure wish his dad or somebody would have told him to slow down early in his career, he didn't need to beat people by huge margins. Seems James' ego was in charge instead of his brain back in those days, he wanted to beat everyone into the ground like he had a point to prove.

...actually, I'm unsure if winning another championship is first priority even now. Maybe he just wants fans more than titles at this point.

"Who won the race? I dont know, but did you see James jump that wall?"

I dont think you'd hear Ryan Villopoto say that

24-0. Only two dudes have ever done it. Stewart is an all time badass.

The Ryans did it. Like someone said, the fact that James was the only guy who could run with RC was probably enough of a confidence booster, and he thought he'd be the new Dominator when Ricky got gone. Who was gonna stop him? But his first season with no Carmichael and boom, he gets injured and can't finish the season. Then he goes 24-0 and handles Reed all season in '09, despite Reed being armed with "the secret" to beating James. Things were looking good. James confirmed to ESPN that he's the most dominant athlete in any sport, probably looking forward to the future while saying it as much as to the past.

Then things went south. Crashes that took him out of 2010, a season a year where it was vital for Stewart to win and stamp out the rising confidences of Dungey and Villopoto. Then 2011, where he was beaten mostly by himself. In 2012 and on, Villopoto was and is the man. You need a lot of speed and confidence to race and beat him, and the injuries, bike woes, and WTF crashes that have plagued the last 4 years of Stewart's career have made it increasingly difficult for him to come to the races with either.

p.s. I think it's true enough that James forced Ricky into an early retirement. Without Stewart there breathing down his neck, RC could've almost coasted, bringing in easy championships till about 2011. But Stewart pushed him to a pace RC didn't want to be at season after season. The risk wasn't worth it when he'd already proven himself enough. And if he wasn't willing to push it, James would have less pressure up front, more wins, more titles. The deterioration of Carmichael's legacy. He thought it was best to leave on top while he still could, and it was probably wise. The whole "RC took 3 seasons to beat McGrath/Stewart was only allowed 2 chances" thing is interesting. A defeated Carmichael in 2007 almost looked imminent.

p.s. again...When did RV say Stewart was faster than him? In the last two years? If so, DO NOT take anything that man says seriously. He works in irony like other artists work in oils or clay. Like in GoPro's preseason Bubba/RV video this year, when Ryan said, "I may not have the best style. I may not have the best bike control. But when it comes to racing...I'm decent." RC gives Stewart props on his speed to look humble. RC and Reed do it more to mock Stewart than anything, I think. Like, "Woah, watch out everyone, here comes the FMOTP!" Cheerful

The End.
