This is the thread that keeps on giving. All we need is Torco to throw in some kitten gifs and it would have it all.

If you want a "4 stroke" style bolt in headstay, this is what you need.

Who built the bike Robbie Maddison or whoever that was that jumped that record jump a few years ago? I'd trust that company.
That was a S/H, built nothing like the production bikes they sell to the public. Its interesting that he never jumped it again and switched to 4 strokes. It was a incredible bike.

Maddos bike was a Service Honda. I REALLY hope they went all out on that one, given it's intended purpose.

I have had the opportunity to ride many, many homemade A/F's, S/H, Teem Trubble. Halo, Stoffers Racing, GTS. Sargent Fab Works, and prolly' others I cant remember. Without question... the ones built closer to stock OEM Honda methods vibed less, the funky ones vibe more. S/H uses a one sided billet headstay that looks trick, but works like crud.

this is my OEM style two-sided headstay

The best handling ones seem to be the Gen 3 CR250r based bikes. They are stable, but turn on a dime. The Gen 3 CR125r based bikes are a bit twitchy at speed. I ride a home made Gen 4 CRF250x based bike. Its comfortable and does most things very well.

These bikes are very simple to build........

Funny you mention that about the Gen 3. I went balls out to build a Gen 4 cause everyone and their brother raved about them on both 500 sites. I got about 90% done with my Gen 4 and got to ride one of Paul's conversions a buddy put together. I stopped work and threw that Gen 4 chassis in the junk pile. I felt like I was riding a 60HP unicycle. I got to ride another buddies Gen 3 build shortly after. It was perfect!

The Gen 3 CR250r is the near perfect chassis. The RM250 conversions are very nice too......

I liked the CR500/ KTM conversion but I would rather have a 380SX motor in that over the Honda motor. I was building a 380SX conversion into a 2008 chassis KTM until my garage burned down. Sad

The 380 is the best 2-stroke mx engine ever built.

Love to have one, but hard to find and I can't imagine parts are cheap, being KTM. Maybe the new world order economy with exchange rates have changed that. A mid size big bore. Mmmmm. Insert pic of Homer here.

The notion that KTM parts are significantly more expensive is erroneous.

anyway, when i encountered Fanelli, I was with someone who is an Engineer. Fanelli refers to himself as an "engineer" and my friend was literally offended by that, afterr seeing his work. and rightfully so. The term engineer gets tossed around these days like anything else.

They used to be, up here. Been out of that KTM thing for a few years now, so it was a shot in the dark. Any engineer should be offended. That MPS crap isn't "engineered" by any stretch of the imagination. A cobbled mess of afterthoughts and wing it as you fly construction. That guy was Tool and Die for 20 years, allegedly. According to him, but then again, he says he builds awesome bikes. He got one thing right. Tool. Lol.

This isnt bashing, these are facts. MPS and S/H build a inferior product.
Inferior how? Functionally, or aesthetically? You keep throwing it at Service Honda, but I haven't seen anything here that shows their work consistently fails under use because of poor design/manufacture. Again, if you're going to keep attacking their work, let's talk about what the issue is. Is it that you just don't like the look of their welds? Or is it actual field failures their bikes are suffering?

I ask this because I've been in product design for 25 years (mechanical engineer, mechanic/fabricator background), and I've found both engineers and machinists/fabricators who not only do sub-par quality work, but I've also encountered the flip side of those who will burn time and money exceeding what's 'good enough'. In a free market and manufacturing environment, 'good enough' is the target; you'll provide product that satisfies functional quality while keeping costs to a minimum. There are quantitative ways to determine this, and the qualitative measures don't cut it.

Yes, I have a Service Honda 500. Put about a good 60+ hours on it, and under my use conditions (which is only a single data point), it works just fine. I'm not saying that proves that SH produces adequate product. But, for what I paid and the performance I got, I'm a happy camper. Do I need high-pressure pipe appearonce quality welds? Probably not. I need a structurally sound frame, and so far, the bike meets that criteria. Also, I haven't heard much SH bashing except from competitors, which is typical and expected. Seems to me that's more of where you're coming from. Prove me wrong with data. I'd be happy to read it. I'm sure AJ at Service Honda would, too.

Again, you say Service Honda builds 'inferior' product. Define 'inferior', and try to use some quantitative measures (such as field failure rates with usage conditions) to back your position.

Lots of goofballs call them selves engineers. When you ask them if they are registered professional engineers, they change the subject.

You don't have to be a PE to be a good engineer. In fact, I know several guys who came from the blue-collar ranks, don't have their PE, and will run circles around a guy who learned everything through academics.

No, I don't have my PE. I am a degree'd engineer (masters in mechanical with a minor in electrical), but the lack of the PE hasn't prevented me from satisfying the needs of the development environment and business that I run.

Actually the whole problem witht he whole KTM 380 motor is that everything is readily available, except cranks, which the last I checked were $870.

I still have a line on a legit 2002 380 SXS with like 10 hours on it I may gobble up. Lol

jtom, the SHIT I had to listen from George about AJ was sickening. I've left that out until now, because it didn't matter. Just more little details though. I wonder how much time AJ spends bashing MPS to HIS prospective customers. I'm guessing probably less. A LOT less. You sell your product based on it's own merits, not by trashing others personally. Keeping it professional, as it were. It's fine to point out your product STRENGTHS verses others, but again, professionally so.

I agree with Senor Scooter, heard the same B.S. Love his stuff or not AJ is a standup dude though, he is great guy and doesn't give you the used car feel. He spent time in europe working on the HRC bikes in the 80's and is a real cool dude.

Even on Banned500riders, AJ chimes in there often and he never shits on anyones stuff, and gives props to people builds as well.
