Nagging injury....what could it be?

Edited Date/Time 12/3/2012 8:02am
I'll start this off by saying that I'm a 35 year old 6'4 210 lb lanky dude that likes jump and ride harder than my body says I can....anyways, I try to keep in good shape and I'm a fabricator by day. I rode the weekend before Hurricane Sandy and was pretty aggressive. I rode a whooped out sand track and a rough jumpy track. Anyways, I've always had minor numbing in my hands but usually from holding on too tight. Well after that weekend on my throttle hand the tips of my middle and ring finger have remained slightly tingly/numb. I guess it's about a month now. I've done my own basic carpel tunnel tests and I don't feel that's the prob. I think it has something to do with my elbow that I have had some tendonitis and an over extension on a while back. Anyways, looking in an anatomy book I see the somethin digitor muscle in my forearm that those nerves pass through. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts. I feel like there is stress in my right forearm and hand AT TIMES. Kinda like the feeling if you were to spin your arm around real fast like a wind mill and the blood rushed to the end. I stretch it out and do some carpel tunnel excercises and it helps but it's not nearly 100%. Wondering if anyone has input on this? I am going to make a doctor's appointment but wondering if a neurologist or an orthopedic doc would be the choice? Sorry for the book but the moto family always seems to have the answers. On a side note.....goin to hit some ramps tomorrow Smile

Its just a guessing game until you go to an orthopedic. Get checked out and don't rush back into it. Give it the time to heal properly or you will be back to square one.

Don't go to an ER! I don't think you're dying and they'll just do tests to make sure you aren't dying and then refer you to an orthopedist. I just wanted to get that cleared up because I work in ER's and see it happen all the time and you get stuck with a huge bill. It's probably just nerve damage after previously hyper extending your elbow. It could be carpel tunnel since it sounds like you work with your hands a lot and riding motocross definitely puts strain on your wrists! But it's pretty much one of those 'You don't know until you go' kinda deals. I would make an appointment with an orthopedist and go from there.

It might be the sweep angle of your bars are pinching a nerve, rotate your bars forward or back first or try different bars.
big hands sometimes need bigger diameter grips like Oury.
go see a sports specialist that understands racing, otherwise the advice is very basic, just stop.

I saw it was the middle and ring finger, obviously not solely n. ulnaris. My last answer was wrong. ENG is good to test the what nerves we are talking about, and where the damage/pressure is located.

I think the typical waiting period for a guy to see a Dr over a nagging injury is about 3 months. If not better after three months go seek medical attention...this will guarantee the injury will heal the day before your appointment.

I think that's a bad idea, if one ignores stuff like this, if it's inflammation, swelling or whatever the issue can further damage the nerve, and it can become permanent, or at least longer recovery. I highly rec seeing the doc right away, and I think the local GP has knowledge enough to point in further direction.

As we age some become pron to Raynaud's syndrome fingers and later on toes. When the fingers tingle to the point they turn black then problems really stand out. Probably not the problem but a thought Mine have turned black even on 50deg plus days.

I agree 100%. I'm a harescrambler. Raced most of this season with a nagging ache in my left elbow, and some minor tingling/numbness in my fingertips. Went to my doctor a week ago, and he told me I have tennis elbow (I can't remember the clinical term). He prescribed a tennis elbow splint, anti-inflammitory meds, and reducing the amount of use/stress it gets. By the way...I'm also a fabricator by trade, and I'm left-handed.

I broke my humourous? bone once and the tendons are tight and sometimes cause that exact thing. Try heat at night, works for me.

Edit: put the best im your elbow or where the tendons are tight.

My wife has "tennis elbow" currently and her elbow is a MESS!. She has a lot of pain and has problems doing the simplest of things like putting on her socks.

She went in the wrong direction and got a cortison shot in her elbow last November which just masked the pain and didnt solve the problem. So her elbow got worse and when the shot wore off it REALLY hurt. Now she goes to physical therapy once a week and hooks an electronic stimulator to her elbow nightly for a certain amount of time as well as a heating pad. She also wears a "counterforce brace" while she works at her desk as well as useing Capsaician patches. Its an ongoing battle and from what shes been told/read it could take well over a year for her elbow to heal.

Good luck Harescrambled

I have had tennis elbow in the past and it can be very painful and takes forever to heal.
At it's worst it had my elbow very swollen with numb finger tips.
Go see a doctor to make sure what the problem is,The Vital Dr's are well meaning, but are no substitute for seeing a real Dr.
in person.

TeamPropain, get it checked out. A very good friend of mine had a similar problem, thinking it was a carpal issue. He even built a a rest on his bar for the clutch hand. Got worse over the season, so in the fall he goes to the doctor. He just turned 40 and was in great shape. After diagnosis, it turned out to be ALS. He's no longer with us. He hung on 5 years. I'm not a doctor, but in a lot of cases early diagnosis can help. Not that it's happening to you. I do know from personal experience, that the longer nerves are screwed up, the longer it takes to get them back to normal. I have a problem with my hand because of that. It never fully recovered. Go see the man. At least you'll know what it is, and if it's not serious. No one likes the doctor, but sometimes it's good to go, and see about it.

Had a very similar issue, it was; Ulnar nerve, very common for cyclists. My understanding is that this nerve gets restricted/stressed and the signals don't make it back up the arm, brain says "no info available" and you feel tingling. Winter healed me.

I made the mistake of taking a GSX-R1100 from Phoenix to Monterey for the USGP in the early 90's. Took the scenic route back and totaled 3,200 miles in a week. My pinky and ring finger were numb for 2 months following that trip. Doc said it was nerve trauma from the weight on my wrists and vibration from the engine. It eventually cleared up. I'd guess you have some inflamed nerves.

No worries, no offense taken. You are absolute right. The few of us here are riders, fans, and if necessary can just point in some direction if even that's even possible.
