They sound fun if you have enough money to buy multiple batteries, but extremely unfun waiting for it to charge while watching everyone else continue to ride.
These things are by no means ready to replace MX bikes yet, they're like cell phones in the 80's. As the technology gets better the prices will start to come down. The cost of the battery and the electronic management system is what makes the run $10k+ but there is a lot of potental in this type of technology.
We were supposed to test a new 72 volt battery last year that would have made ridiculous power, but dialed down could've lasted 3x as long as the current 48 volts. Unfortunately, Quantya couldn't secure any Government grants like Zero has, so they closed the U.S. operations.
I am surprised they charged so fast, but I do agree they're not ready for prime time. I think it will be a while before they are with the economy the way it is.
As others have pointed out, the quiet factor alone will open up many more potential riding areas. As they continue to develop the prices will come down. Look how much big screen TVs have dropped in recent years. Long term, I see them as another great option to have available to get in some more riding time.

Can't believe how close-minded people are about this technology. They will eventually perform better and be cheaper than petrol bikes, but people write them off because they are quiet and don't have gears. And those last two points sound more like a positive than a negative to me.

People are already making very quick electric cars, some of the four wheel drive student designed electric cars are very impressive
I have always been for Electric bikes. How many times have reviews referred to bikes as being "Electric" like in feel? Just about every 250 shoot out I ever read in my life. Now they will be electric.
They tend to jump and ride a little like a bicycle in that if you swap a little off line they want to go that way instead of straighten up. It's weird at first but once you get use to it it's no big deal. Think of it as half way between a mx bike and a downhill mtb. Our bikes weighed almost as much as a 125 @ 190lbs, but felt more like the weight of minibike.
As far as the batteries go, some of our bikes had 150-200+hrs with no loss of charge capacity. I believe Quantya guaranteed their batteries for 2000 charge cycles, which is way more than any 2 or 4 stroke motor could ever last.
I have a 2 acres lot, but the neighbors would get pretty pissed if I started riding my 450 around the backyard.
I can't wait for the day I can bring an E-bike home. I'll be riding around, and none of the neighbors mowing their lawn will be able to complain because their cute little John Deere will make more noise than my bike.
I have heard such rumors myself....
That having been said I think electric bikes will get sales from folks that wouldn't have bought a conventional bike so don't think for the foreseeable future electric bikes will cannibalize new MX bike sales.
This will happen when wind, solar and biofuel replaces oil, coal, gas, hydro and nuclear.
In other words, when pigs fly.
I'd like to know if the electric bike movement is getting any federal funding?
