My old 125 Yamaha

Have owned this bike since new in '76. Don't know how it managed to stick around, as many , many motorcycles have come and gone since then. It has been in boxes since '92.

In the last 6 months, this is what I have ended up with. Just need to mount the silencer.

Don't see too many of these anymore.

So cool. Absolutely love the laydown shocked MX125. That fuel tank design /shape has always been a favorite whether on a MX or YZ. How does it run?

Don't know. Will get the C/S sprocket and chain on tomorrow, along with the silencer. It ran when taken apart in '92. Just hoping it still makes spark. The motor is fresh, rod kit, mains, seals, bearings , piston , bore, NOS clutch basket and shift forks, and linkage, shifter cover.

I have both charge coils for the stator NOS, a spare cdi unit off a running bike also, just in case of no fire.

Will throw some gas to it friday, and see what happens.

I've been following Project Racers build and have exchanged emails. It is cool he has owned this since new. I found mine after 35 years of looking. The only one I had ever seen was when I worked for CURNUTT Shock back in the day. I took mine in kinda the same direction but with some period mods. I still have the stock shocks and some small do dads but here is mine finished first part of the year. I do have a desert tank and a correct period DRA number plate from back in the day. I was setting it up originally as they were raced in the desert back then. I think these were one of the prettiest Yamaha's from the time frame.

Put the fuel to it today. Did not even pull the plug to check for spark. Fired on the third kick, old electrics and all. Need to pull the clutch cover as the gasket was an original Yamaha one from way back, a little weep going on.

Other than that, runs good. Peaky little bugger. Had forgotten just how zappy the old 125 was.

Will try and get a video up of it running soon.

It almost brought a tear to my eye to ride it after all these years.

Dennis, this bike had clay still embedded in it from Golen Eagles on certain parts. Hated to clean it off in a way.

Big thanks to my good friend Dan Ward of Bay City Cycles for wheel lacing, boring, crank rebuild, and engine assembly.

If you are in central Florida, Dan is one of the good guys. Has been racing and repairing bikes since the late 60's.

Those 76's are beautiful bikes! My racing buddy in '78 ran one of those when we were both novices. They may seem pipey now, but my 76 Elsinore seemed much more pipey back then. One of my other buddies had a 75.

I would love to find a 76 today.

Good luck on finding one. I have in all of my research only konw about 20 or less of them tops. There are around 5 in Australia and a couple in South Africa. I have seen a couple on Craigslist that I missed here in SoCal.

Project Racers is only one of two I have seen that is still from the original owner. These bikes are now extremely rare in the Yamaha world. I was lucky to find mine all in one piece. If you look closely at the bikes you can see the differences. They are minor......... but they are cool bikes.

The 76 was basically a YZ without the monoshock. The earlier MX series was in no way competitive with these models.

Not to Hijack the thread.......Here is a picture of LR "Hollywood" Watkins on a pumped FMF MX125C. He worked for FMF back in the day and he and Donnie did mods to the motor and suspension to make it competitive on the on the expert level. He sent me this pic this past winter after he saw mine.

I believe there were less than 2000 of these ever made. Back in the late 80's , I was doing some work at a house just a few miles from my house, and in the garage was a beat MX125C. I just looked at it and laughed. Should have tried to scoop it up now that I think about that one.

I know of one person who has five MX125C models, along with some spare used parts here in the states. One other fairly complete bike also in Kentucky.

About a year ago, there was a really nice one on Mark's page with a blown engine. A junker on Ebay about a month ago.

They are out there , but not in numbers. Trying to find some of the parts unique to this model is the hard part.

The airbox , airboot, and splash guards are pretty much extinct. My bike has a cut aftermarket rear fender. I do have an NOS unit, but needs to be polished up, as it has some scratches. This fender is near impossible to find. Only contact with a good friend allowed me to get ahold of this fender, who had it for years in his collection.

The dished rear sprockets are another hard to find item. That is one thing I am still looking for, as all I could find was an after market PBI sprocket.

Yamaha still shows many parts available, but when they start the superceding process, the new stuff sometimes just does not fit quite right, although it will work.

I am on to my next project, which is straightening out my 1970 Indian 50 Boy Racer, that I have had since new in '70.

This is not a picture of my bike, but mine is identical (was). ANY parts for this bike , name your price.

Thanks Larry. Hope all is going well for you.

I am happy with the old Yamaha. It's like a used car, though. If you look real close at it, there are some things that are just going to have to be the way they are going to be. I really would like to take it out and pound a few laps on it, but just can not bring myself to do it.

Not sure which is more brittle, the bikes frame or mine.
