I crashed into a fence. Took me a looong time before I could ride and not be scared half to death. (no, this isn't me...but could have been)

Lesson learned: Before you let your friends make you do something, make them teach you HOW first.
I rode the entire week end, in1962

I took the engine apart and discovered the piston had rusted to the cylinder wall.
In 1979 my Dad bought me a new XR80 after a year straight of begging. I think he still regrets that decision. I remember my first crash, coming around the corner of a trail, seeing by buddy coming the other way and eating it hard.

You could ride the powerline trails so far that you had to watch how much gas you had used.
Here's my crash story... I was probably about 14 and even smaller than I am now. My uncle put me on his 70s 250 enduro bike. I had driven tractors, so was familiar with a clutch, but that wasn't the problem. The bike was a monster weight wise for my small size at the time. It was at the farm, and I was started way too close to a piece of farm equipment. I let out the clutch and gave it some gas, but it went faster than I expected, and I didn't have time to react and try to turn, so right in to the back corner of the hay chopper I went. Crunched one of my fingers, but otherwise uninjured. Didn't try to ride for a couple of years after that, on a lighter bike in a more wide open area, and no crashes that time.

I wanted a bike so bad after that. All the lucky kids in our small town had "dirt bikes" and rode all over the place. We were given a few basket cases but never got any of them running. One was an old-ass Zundapp. The other was a Sachs "Sundowner". I used to push that thing around just so I could coast it down hills and act like I had a "dirt bike".
Finally, my dad was given a few boxes of scrap parts for those briggs & stratton fat tire mini-choppers. From those boxes we pieced together a running bike. My brother and I shared it and we rode that thing endlessly in the alleys and local trails.
Soon, my buddy got a real bike, a 1973 Yamaha GT80. I was so envious. One day, he let me ride it. I got the hang of the clutch pretty quick and was so stoked on that thing. Eventually, he moved up to a Hodaka Ace-100. My Dad bought his GT80 for me for $150 and I worked it off in the garage. Finally, I had a real Dirt Bike !!!!
I rode that GT80 every day. A few years later we got a 78 YZ80 and then eventually an 83 YZ80. I was always a real scrawny kid and never was able to reach the ground on any of these bikes but I never knew any different and it never slowed me down. About this time, we ran across a guy at the homemade local track who had a KTM 465 (?) He asked if I wanted to ride it so, of course, Hell Yeah! I was about 11 yrs old. When I sat on it, my feet barely reached the pegs with my knees straight. He fired it up for me and I used a big rock to get going. I could not beleive the power that thing had compared to my 80! LOL I cruised it around a little brapping the throttle and then he had to grab me to stop. Those were the days....
Life was never the same again.
It's pretty bad when we wake up unconscious and consider it a "good time"...wtf's the matter with us anyhow?
KW859 on his 1st bike.....still has it.......ain't he cute
Got on it, pinned it, took a hard right into this bank which turned me left, kept it wide open down the back yard until i slid out 10 yards before the woods. Could of been really bad. Then figured it out and just rode circles around my house for the next few hours until it ran out of gas.
